Offroad parking at 673745. Crossed the causeway 2 and three quarter hours before low tide. Went up the track south on Shona Beag until we could see the house then cut off right to the isthmus. Rough going all the way with the odd track but old stalkers path overgrown with bracken. The route on Eilean Shona is a path at 655730 by the side of the house that rises eventually onto a yellow waymark path to the summit quite easily. We couldn't face going back over Shona Beag because of the rough terrain and ticks in the high bracken so as it was low tide we walked through the mud, seaweed and mussel beds which was much easier back to the causeway. I would recommend a return this way at low tide in the summer months. Under 6 miles with Dangerous Dave. | bolton | 15/08/2022 |
Once on Eilean Shona the walk up to the trig is very straightforward. Took the track past the lily pond, some houses and the village hall. Then took path uphill to the dam. From here followed yellow wooden posts to the summit. On the way back we followed the shoreline around Shona Beag without any problems. With bolton. | Dangerous Dave | 15/08/2022 |
Advised by a local to follow the overhead cables across Shona Beag. Not far but swampy and rough going. Headed for low point left of the Shona Beag HP before dropping down a steep gully to the shore. Didn’t do my research and thought the ‘open’ hillside north of the Marilyn would give a short easy ascent. Wrong! Went up where the coast path loops inland but it’s very steep and a hellhole of rocks, bracken and heather. Followed the ‘yellow’ path down from the summit, muddy but still much better. Comes out close to the big house. Whole thing was a bit over 3hrs, not bad considering my poor route choice. | govanah | 09/08/2022 |
Following Sìdhean na Raplaich early morning. Hot day made crossing Shona Bheag hard work over tussocks. At isthmus head slightly to right to pick up track past cottage onto main track through village passing ornamental pond, village hall. First major estate building, up its vehicle entrance there is a Victorian 3ft wide track/path leading off the right hand side. This heads up into the tress past wind thrown section, through an old metal arch gate (missing gate and fence) then the path passes reservoirs and onto upper section following the line of a dyke. 3hrs round trip. Most tides should give 2.5hrs either side of low tide. Loads of ticks, so beware in summer. | N.Morters | 17/05/2019 |
There's plenty of time to cross the causeway and climb the hill 2 hours before low tide, and note row boats either side in case of disaster. Shona Beag climbed via power lines and then up through the lovely woods. Head S from the top into a dip and follow the muddy path to where the trees start. Did not find the path on the way down but easy descent through the trees. Found path on way back; in descent, path heads hard right immediately above the trees below crags, N, and is flat for 200m or so, then zig-zags down. Much bracken growing on it, needs more traffic. BaB climbed from Shiel Cottage up the stream, but now lots of brash higher up. Better descent to the N, coming out 2-300m N of S Cottage, near a ruined tractor. | Gill | 09/05/2019 |
Rough over Shona Beag then on Shona walked North round coast to houses. Steep ascent on North ridge not recommended due to crags not on my map. Easier down to Shona House where I chatted to the island handyman. | NormanW | 30/09/2018 |
Acroos the causeway, then over Shona Beag, steep descent over to main island to join track to holiday cottages. Then path straight up to summit. Spectacular views and very enjoyable outing. Plenty of time during low tide to make the return trip. | mcbboyd | 22/09/2018 |
Due to watching family of otters in North Channel and surprisingly rough going over Shona and Shona Beag's high points meant return crossing was made with water shin deep. | lordtonult | 22/09/2018 |
3 of 4: From Shona Beag. | ChrisR | 29/05/2018 |
shona beag and beinn a bhaillidh 2 hours before low tide parked on verge to track entrance. | robertphillips | 02/12/2017 |
From Kylesmore via Shona Beag. Sunny spells, hot. High bracken on Beag. | Rounsfell | 23/07/2017 |
We arrived almost 3 hours before scheduled low tide, though had to wait 20 minutes for the water to drop enough to not come over our boots. Another 20 mins and it should have been fully dry. Our approach was over Shona Beg using the track to gain some height to begin with. Then a direct route up the main hill, following the stream through the woods from Doireaneighinn. Unfortunately our time at the trig was spent in cloud. Though we were treated to some very special views of this remarkable area from the west top, before our timely descent to Eilean Shona House. The return was quite entertaining too, along the coast well below the high tide level, back to the causeway over the slippy-slidey seaweed and muds. All in all a super hill to finish this trip up north on. | Alex C | 16/06/2017 |
Descend from main road, no parking facilities, locked gate, no signposts but grass verge ok. Causeway OK from about 3 hrs before to 3 hrs after low tide. A short distance on, a power line divides, follow the west fork across rough terrain most of the way across Shona Beag but turn right before the escarpment and try to find the remains of a stalkers path to the isthmus, where there is more rough and uneven ground. Follow the track through the village as far as its so called hall, from where a route to the open hill has been cleared of felled trees. | Topographer57 | 02/05/2017 |
Unusually deep covering of fresh snow | AndrewFinnimore | 03/02/2016 |
One of the reasons for Mariiyn bagging. Use the tide tables for Kinlochmoidart. I crossed the causeway 3 hours before low tide and recrossed an hour before low tide. Shona Beag is very rough so follow the powerlines, and then pick up the stalker's path which runs round the North side of the crags, and on to Shona Mor. There is felling so best to head up from the N end of reservoir. There are fine views from the summit to the isles. A great wee hill. | Thearlaichdubh | 05/04/2015 |
W Jenx, parked on roadside verge before track to Shona Beag. Walked down that across causeway and up onto Beag. Faint track from high point to power lines, after top used zig zag track to cut down to main isle. Aim for white cottage, then native trees for haul up heathery hillside to summit and trig. Whiteout on top. Fine location. | nordicstar | 21/01/2015 |
Outstanding views inland and seaward. Ascended with Franni Baggins. Left a map case and map on the top under a rock. If you find it, keep it! | raffemeister | 20/04/2014 |
A group of us tried for this 3 days earlier but arrived 3-4 hours before LW @ Mallaig and no chance of crossing! I came back today alone and had to wait 30 mins for causeway to dry. Followed faint boggy track under the electricity line across Shona Beag followed by steep descent. Turned left at the reservoir & up through trees past houses to a metal gate. Good views. Back at ford in 2.5 hours and it was very low water then. Agree hardest bit is climb back up to Shona Beag - didn't realise it was a sub-Hump or I'd have gone over the highest point. | signyred | 20/02/2014 |
I arrived two hours before low tide and the crossing point was quite dry – I suspect that it spends more time dry each day than under water. The hardest part is crossing Subhump Shona Beag – although, not all that obvious there is a well engineered path down from the summit of Shona Beag through the bracken to the beach between the two parts of the island. This is contrary to the descriptions I have read elsewhere. | Martin R | 03/03/2013 |
Spring tide was perfect, very low water. but island is covered in ferns and ticks. | tallblond | 19/08/2012 |
Over dry ford and uphill on track through a few trees and across to more dense tree planting. Gingerly steeply down over dry moss covered rocks using hands and backside to more rough stuff and the track leading to the big house. Couldn't find the start of a path up through the wood as I was too far west. Easy clamber among old trees, fallen debris to pass through an old deer fence to a path uphill to the open air. On compass over rough moor to the horizon between crags. Top of hill was around to the right, reached by dropping down and crossing 2 N/S ridges to column 9759 at 12.45. Muck, Eigg, Rum, Cuillin, Blaven, Rois-Bheinn and Resipol. | arranc | 26/05/2010 |
Rvisit. Nice rocky summit, fine views. I rushed it in about 2h including Shona Beag, unsure of tide situation, but causeway dry for approx 4h; low tide seems approx same time as at Mallaig. Room for c.3 cars at start of track. | RHW | 30/05/2009 |
Date is first visit. Notes from later...rough crossing Shona Beag, craggy flanks, heathery hill, excellent view, causeway open max 4h. tk from A861 673744, cross causeway 1-2 h from low tide | RHW | 22/08/1999 |
Trying to keep up with Rob. | Eddie | 22/08/1999 |
I climbed this hill whilst staying on the island, and well before I knew about Marilyns. Hope it still counts. | Minto | 03/01/1992 |
