Parked at 845033, leaving plenty of space for residents; up lane, then grassy tracks which looked as though they had been mown in places to help keep them clear. Lovely little hill and super viewpoint for valleys containing the railway and road. Marked on the map as a possible to do in a brief good spell on a poor day, we went up on a hot, mostly sunny afternoon, breaking our drive to a holiday let near Pennal. With Pete.pwheeler09/09/2023
3/6 on a circular from Cemmaes. Approached up track sth of summit on A470. Easy walk then two left turns on foot-paths to reach the summit. Left via NW on to Pen Coed Glyntwymyn.Meanderer07/05/2023

I guess the name comes from the the orange/red bracken that entirely covers this little hill. I don't recommend climbing direct from the A470 - even in December the bracken/bramble combination makes this a challenge. At the summit there is a small patch of tussocky grass - making it a bit tricky to location the true, ground level summit. I chose a hummock with what could be a post hole - I like to imagine visitors from the nearby village of Commins Coch celebrating midsummer on the summit. Certainly would be a good place to watch for invaders passing along what is now the A470/railway corridor but clearly has been in use for much longer that either of these two have been in existence. According to my suspect mobile phone app the summit is at SH 84993 03225 +/-20 metres.M3WDD17/12/2016
