From pier via Taversoe chambered cairn. Continue up lane and head right at what is now a laid path to join RSPB nature reserve. Up to Blotchnie Fiold, across ridge to Knitchen Hill and descend to road for return to ferry. Reserve route marked by white tipped poles. Heritage Centre at pier worth a visit.sarahk30/06/2023
Heather. Super sunny Sunday & very light winds. Grand Hill to start our Orkney holiday.garbo110319/09/2022
Apart from the South southeast of burgers path pastor loss pasta 595mm bench with fantastic view up to the trig pillar 10643 then west along continuing path to the island summit which I then had 30-minutes lying in the grassy Heather didn't fall asleep but good rest. Follow the fence posts for a circular trip around and back to the start. Merton interesting elderly woman called Pankie an Indian name I think from having spent 30 years living on an ashram in Indiavegibagger21/08/2022
#682 Misty traverse from Bellona to the pub. Horrible going until Knitchen Hill, Ok until Blotchnie Fiold, nice summit cairn and post, then on to the 'high point' and back onto that horrible track. To round off the day, the pub was closed, landlady gone to the County show!!!tim74713/08/2022
Visited with Jill & Dave Kitchin trig first en route to Blotchnie Fiold to repeat this Marilyn for a summit view.Dugswell208/08/2022
Followed waymarked path up to the trig on Knitchen Hill (227m) then along the ridge path to cairn. High point on peat hag to the south, marked by a few stones. With Dugswell2 & Jill.Dangerous Dave08/08/2022
As a foot passenger, from pier up hill, turn right until you see the RSPB Trumland sign. Narrow ( q overgrown) path rising onto open moor. Follow wooden stakes marked with white paint onto view point Kitch….Hill, continue along broad back to Blothiefiold , also following white marked fence posts. Didnt want any tension or indigestion….mellow amble back to pier and a sit in the sunshine fir 15-20 via boot back to Tingwall. Note, parking at T can be very ‘tight’ or none available. RSPB suggest that you do NOT access path via adjacent to Trumland House - Garden. 05/2022VerySlowPlodder31/05/2022
Started from Yarso chambered cairn carpark. Easy track to follow to the top. Great viewstallblond29/04/2022
From parking for Yorsa Chambered cairn and up good peat roads. Pleasant walk if it hadn't been wet and very windy. Yorsa well worth the detour.Thearlaichdubh24/09/2021
A quick ascent from Frotoft and the old peat roadsSpudGunn27/08/2021
Cycled up from ferry to Taversoe Tuick, then RSPB path signposted then marked with white tipped posts. No slurry, ground mostly good. Plenty of time between 1305 and 1520 and drop in on chambered cairn.Topographer5718/08/2021
From ferry turned left along the B road visiting the 3 chambered cairns first - including the one that goes off west from Frotoft, back along the path to meet the track coming up from Frotoft, followed this old peat road all the way to the summit ridge then a more indistinct and a bit boggy path in parts across to the summit. From the summit followed the way marked path to Kitchen Hill and then down to the road, left along the road past the Chambered cairn, then turned right down the yellow road to the church then back for the 3.20pm ferry. 6.95 miles, just under 3hrs walking time.JulieB09/09/2020
up old peat road from Frotoft to High Camps of Brae, then along broad summit ridge to Blotchnie Fiold. Followed waymarked route off over Knitchen Hill to B road near Cubbie Roo's Burden. KeithByTheC09/09/2020
1 of 2: From the ferry via the chambered cairn as per the Walk Highlands recommended route. Overgrown. Then across to Knitchen Hill and down on a good path. Up and down on the return route would be the best option. With Karen.ChrisR08/08/2020
Morning bus/ferry visit to island. Low cloud chose to visit the 3 cairns firs. After Knowe of Yarso cut over to the track up the hill from Frotoft. Summit duly obliged clearing. Down to the east to ferry, 3hrs sufficient. Onto Mid Tooin for the afternoon.N.Morters23/08/2019
From the ferry pier via Knitchen Hill.curlebd07/07/2019
From Ferry via Taversoe Tuick chambered Cairn, then path to post and cairn ,HP short distance SSE back via Trig on Knitchen Hill. With time to spare before return Ferry went to Blackhammer chambered Cairn.PeterD29/06/2019
Track from Frotoft to about 10m beyond highest point, then narrow, partly indistinct path to the summit.Winterfloodian07/06/2019
From HY 4271 2755, took a look in the impressive Taversoe Tuick chambered cairn on the way. Good way-marked path all the way. On to the trig, then down to the road at HY 4380 2791 for a circular walk.jonglew23/02/2019
From the Taversoe Tuick car park, with a visit to the chambered cairn (a must see). Back on the farm track, then an unpleasant section through the farm slurry pit and a disgustingly wet and muddy excuse of a path. It soon improves, however, and the easy way-marked RSPB path takes you right to the top. Visiting the RSPB cairns takes you in a circuit to the col, then on to Knitchen Hill and down the path and the road to avoid having to go through the slurry pit.Gill23/02/2019
Up from Taversoe Tuick cairn- over summit and on to Knitchen Hill (trig). Good path from there down to Shingly Hill.NormanW16/06/2018
From the ferry pier via Knitchen Hill.summitsup08/05/2018
From the ferry pier we turned west onto the main road that circles the island. After a couple of hundred yards we turned right onto the path by the chambered cairn, making our way onto the RSPB reserve where the path is well marked to close to the summit, although there are several boggy patches. Return was via cairn at Knitchen Hill and then clear path back down to main road.the pigguy 07/09/2017
The western path has largely gone, so we floundered up through horrible spongy terrain. And the link to Keirfea was more of the sameColin Crawford24/06/2016

Martin 66's route on the way up. Came back on the lower path and tried to shortcut down to the road - don't: wide ditch filled with brambles and other thorns.benalder28401/04/2016
M J O. From the ferry. Took initial wrong turn and tried to access it from Trumland House. You can't. Take a right where the ferry road meets the main road and walk for a few hundred metres. There's a footpath that takes off up the hill beside a house. Easy to follow with a possible variation. Good views from the top. Cool but calm. Hot in the sun on the way back acros on the boat. Great wee island.Martin6615/03/2016
Set off from chambered cairn to the south ignoring a sign that advised using an alternative route. After attempting to cross a quagmire returned and took the alternative path indicated which was reasonably dry. A pleasant walk to the summit on a good path following white marker posts. descended via Knitchen Hill. With Val. Weather fine.mike.hoult08/06/2015

Blizzard at summit. Good path from burial chamber but very boggy near start.Campbell Singer30/03/2015
Via the lovely ferry. First went to the sub terrain cist. Then cut across the moor to the NW. Very tough ground to get to the top. Found a path heading east of the top back to the road. Bought a pair of socks in the gift shop at the pier.Play2End22/08/2014
Chris The Bear Bienkowski strolled off into the mist leaving Jim Bloomer, Tricky Speirs and Dugswell2 struggling to bag this Marilyn.Dugswell203/06/2014
With Doug, Jim and Tricky. P to SW. Up track to 230m then across boggy terrain.chrisbien03/06/2014
A 2 hour walk from the ferry.bolton03/08/2013
W Jenx en route back from Shetland Isles. Ferry to Rothsay (pricey compared to earlier islands) and drive to near Chambered Cairn at GR427275 with roadside parking for three cars. Up track and round top buildings of Brinian. Cut left through field then rough ground for 300m to gain walking lines coming up from pier. Great weather/views. To top then ridge to Knitchen cairn.nordicstar06/06/2013
From pier, once on RSPB site it is waymarked all the way, except it leads you to the large cairn rather than true summit. I then headed down into Goukheads to disturb the bonxies and the many geese, on my way to Kierfea hill.Martin R18/05/2012
Found way marked path avoiding nests. Ignore the guide encountered at Froloft.Eddie17/08/2011
Circular walk from the ferry anti-clockwise using good path to summit.AndrewFinnimore25/04/2011
Climbed with John on way to Knitchen Hill on day trip to Rousay.Skerryvore27/07/2010
Revisit for Knitchin trig. By big ancient cairn en route to the Marilyn, which I revisited before following the RSPB trail down to car park at 427275, then a mile of quiet road back to my starting point at 439279 (path between last 2 houses - obscure RSPB signpost). Having spent 50 mins on Wyre and 3h on Rousay, I now had 3.5 hours in the sunshine for the roadside trig on Egilsay - that's how the ferries work!RHW01/06/2010
a muddy walk on a chilly day. still views from the summit of the surrounding islands make this a worthwhile walk. From pier to summit-return is about 2 hours. Nice wee cafe at ferry terminal.hjaltland03/03/2009
Sunny, warm, good views, cloud later.iangalbraith26/08/2008
From road to S, near Taversöe Tuick chambered cairn. Meandering route to fairly level summit area, followed NW to a cairn and post with white top. Other possible 'high points' around. Ground frozen fortunately. Then on to Knitchen TP.Aye Jimmy22/03/2008
Walked up from the hill taking in Knitchen Hill on route. No views as summit in clouds.garyhoney19/06/2005
