Parked by cattle grid to south, along road past farm on FP then through various gates to top. | PeterD | 14/01/2024 |
4 mile walk with Pauline from Talybont .. up the lane to Upper Wenallt farm .. the RoW on map is wrong .. RoW goes up main farm entrance and then bears left up the hill through gate .. it’s then signed ..had a chat with farmer to check we were on RoW .. we stayed on RoW to just before woods then went diagonally up through gate then up to the cracking hill fort .. descended along fence line back to RoW .. then on RoW through forest and back to Talybont on the tram road .. lovely :-) | milejunkie | 17/11/2023 |
13mile walk with Peggy, beautiful sunny day | davecnash | 13/09/2023 |

There was no parking close to the farm so I ended up well down the road. Fields and gates to the top, no problems | Colin Crawford | 12/10/2021 |
Cycled up to Upper Wenallt where I had a long chat with the farmer who is very annoyed with walkers / cyclists who leave gates open. He described his driveway as a permissive pass and also allows people to visit the hillfort (summit) but PLEASE make sure you only use the gates and fasten them behind you! | Rob Rees | 13/08/2021 |
Parked by cattle grid at SO113205, walked back along the road then left and up track to the left of the farmhouse. I then went left up the hill but it is better to stay on the track a little longer to avoid a slightly difficult gate. Summit is on the site of old fortifications. | clivevilla | 21/06/2021 |
From the south, a few gates to cross. | Adrian | 12/12/2020 |
Like others before us, we could not locate the ROW from the SE. Ended up crossing a couple of fences before taking a clearer track that led from Wenallt to an interesting summit feature. Returned by the more sensible route that goes through Wenallt farmyard itself. | summitter | 20/09/2020 |
Bwlch - Wenallt - Tor y Foel - Bryn Melyn - Bryniau Gleision - Cefn yr Ystrad - Twyn Ceilog - Rhymney. | Mark Jackson | 21/02/2020 |
From the tram road part of the usk valley walk up a steep path through the woodland. Some nice views of the reservoir and near by hills. | hodder | 13/08/2019 |
Parked by cattle grid at SO113205 and walked back to Wenallt farm. Took footpath shown on OS map, but not marked on ground, to the left of farmhouse following farm track and path to summit. | Ramblingpaul | 05/08/2018 |
From Round back of Wennallt farm and over pasture to pleasant top. Accosted by farmer on return. Very pleasant chap when he found out my innocent mission. Had cleared the summit of bracken and brambles so that the Iron Age fort could be better appreciated as well as providing additional grazing. | Campbell Singer | 25/03/2018 |
from res up fenceline then on to tor y foel through farmyard farmer acknowledged row | underhill | 05/11/2017 |
From SE, RoW not very obvious, headed straight up. Decent hillfort. Dusk with snowy higher summits all around. | RHW | 31/01/2015 |
Circular walk from Aber Village, fording Caerfanell then up through forest on steep but well-defined path, unlike earthworks at summit which were not well-defined. Pleasant grassy, partially shaded summit where we lunched and watched fell-runners coming off Tor y Foel. Summit is few meters S of fence line. | jonglew | 17/08/2014 |
Verge parking after the cattle grid at SO 11329 20510. We walked NE along the road for 500m to a bridleway. There is no sign here for a public right of way nor does the bridleway start where it is depicted on the map. Just go up the track towards the farm and there is a gate and track on the left that bypasses the farm. There's a path that leaves the track at SO11574 21362 up to the summit. Although this hill looks private on the map (ie not access land) we found an OS map bolted to a stile just beyond the summit claiming otherwise. It even depicted a concessionary path. That was in 2009 and nearly 4 years later the latest OS 25k map still hasn't been updated with this info! | David Gradwell | 26/10/2009 |
Used to live on the side of this hill so waked it regularly | weeksbell | blank |
