Nice area of old fort with beech and crags. High point unmarked. Much of thrunton forest is obstructed by wind felled trees so much harder than expected but the mapped path from the ridge via McCartneys cave exists. Our exit route is recommended- go north on mapped tracks to north edge of forest.Denise 06/02/2024
From Callay Crag via the steep heathery path and NcCartney's Cave. Levelish summit with gnarled and twisted Beech trees and sandstone rock outcrops, a little bilberry . High point unmarked. Would be a great place to campRichardM06/02/2024
Castle hill and callaly crag from the minor road.robertphillips19/02/2023
Started and ended at the Thrunton Forest England carpark, which was packed with mountain bikers by 10am. Forestry tracks to the Coe Burn then over a footbridge and up a narrow muddy path to Coe Crag and on to Long Crag. Continued on the main track westwards then back down to the Coe Valley and up the footpath to Hard Nab and its wonderful wind shelter, passing a herd of wild ponies half-way along. Callaly Crag next amongst a twitter of finches then across Thrunton Crag to the beech-topped Castle Hill. Forestry track East and NE-wards below Thrunton Crag to near its exit, taking a red-marked path just before a car lay-by back to the main car park. 3.45hrs.summitter07/11/2021

Well used woodland with numerous unmapped paths criss crossing the whole area. I parked at a distinctive spot where a track leads around a tree leaving it as an island. Path from here joins a larger path leading east around the hill. After a short distance, and before a gate, it turns sharp right taking you straight up to the summit.moorsman30/09/2021
Parked at Thrunton wood CP > Callaly Crag first then onto Castle Hill. Lots of paths and bike trails not shown on the OS helped bag these two.Andrew Simmons23/07/2021
Pleasant walk up through wood to summit then continue steeply up callaly cragscjo15/05/2021
Parking off the road at Callaly (NU05971017). Path straight up the hill from the parking and clear paths > Castle Hill. Many paths on the ground. Descended S from Castle Hill then a clear path straight up Callaly Crag. Paths/track along > Calally Crag summit. Continued for ~800m to NU07220938 and returned on the well defined path shown on the OS map.JohnR23/10/2020

From Car Park (NU 086 099) on the east side of Thrunton Wood. As part of an afternoon stroll. Followed red trail in anti-clockwise direction. Eventually, saw a wooden gate leading directly up to Castle Hill. Returned to red trail.Jhimmy29/03/2019

On a warm & sunny April day from the car park for Thrunton Wood Walks. Followed the tracks round to the fort at Castle Hill, then back over by Callaly Crag & on across to Long Crag. Lazed around the summit for a while, then continued E & then down into the forest back to the start. Discovered that 3 ticks were feasting themselves on my legs later that evening...NotReallyABagger11/04/2007
