A 2nd visit with L. Calm and sunny 5hr walk from A6 layby after my 13 day virus lay up. Linked grassy S ridge tops then back along the beautiful Borrowdale -with the farm and meadows being a touch of paradise -utter calm as hidden by the folds of the hills and nature -chickens and rabbits nibbling the grass together. Wainwright thought this was the most beautiful valley outside of Lakeland -its now in Lakeland of course and the Friends of The Lake district have bought High Borrowdale and its hay meadows to preserve its cultural and natural beauty - a fine choice.Chris Pearson20/09/2021
From the A6 layby by the phone box on the A6, via the fine cairn with no name, to Ashtead Fell, Mabbim Crag and Castle Fell. Route down to Borrow beck from Castle Fell to the north west not recommendedRowanP12/09/2021

Fr0m Huck's Bridge. 4 hills to whinfell, then drop down into Borrowdale and ascend between Bush Howe and Jeffrey Mount. Along to Jeffrey Mount and then all the way along the ridge to Piper's Hill and back to Huck's Bridge over the stepping stones. Just under 5 hours.Longwojo29/05/2021
13.5 mile circular from A6 layby following good but boggy trail over Ashtead Fell, Mabbin Crag, Castle Fell, Whinfell Beacon, Grayrigg West Top (23m prominence) and Grayrigg. Then descending to valley and following easy grass trails across Winterscleugh, Whinash and pathless Pipers Hill back down to car. 1071m ascent. Sunny/breezy conditions with nice views. No one about. Steep pull up this from road crossing horribly bulldozed new forest track and up to summits. The second one being higher and a surprisingly scrambly descent off this hill.DanTrig18/05/2021
First hill for six months due to the covid situation. It was great to back out.thenomad16/04/2021
GFE gave bike and me lift to High Borrow Bridge, hid bike then Ashtead Fell and south side of ridge to wireless station. Track to Low Borrowdale Farm, up to N side of ridge and to end. Back to bike via stepping stones which were too wide for me to jump so waded instead. Bike 9 miles mainly downhill to Kendaltrimarc201/04/2021
From parking area at east end of Borrowdale valley. Whinfell beacon and three tops on south side of valley, then direct decent down to valley bottom, over bridge and up nice rising track to ridge between Whinash and Winterscleugh. Then back east over Winterscleugh, minor tops, and finished on Jeffries Mount. Direct down to road bridge and back to car. Winter flurries. With B and R.jenx27/12/2020

Continuation from Mabbin Crag. Followed path down through forest to a col, then up, avoiding crags, to the summit. To descend, dropped down steeply into Combs Hollow to join track in Borrowdale, following it south-east back to the car. Arrived after dark to find rear windscreen had been vandalised. Snow and ice. Circuit. A6 Huck's Bridge - Ashstead - Mabbin - Castle Fell - Whinfell Beacon - Low Borrowdale. Note that storm damage has closed the path north of the rver, and the replacement stepping stones (555.036) were underwater when we were there - fortunately we didn't need them !Moorponder04/07/2017

Climbed from Roundthwaite Abbey to Jeffrey's Mount along ridge to Whinash. Dropped down into Borrowdale and climbed back up the other side to Ashstead Fell, Mabbin Crag and Whinfell Common before dropping back into Borrowdale and following the dale back to the A685 and return to start. Very enjoyable and peaceful walking.meltdiceburg30/01/2016
A fine hill, which is perhaps enhanced by the forest. A good path starts at a gate, where the Breasthigh Road leaves the A6.JohnW05/10/2015

Having had a hard walk last weekend taking in 8 Wainwrights, I'd promised myself a weekend doing nothing, but it was far too nice for that, so out came the boots. Parked at the bottom of Borrowdale just off the A685, then up to Whinfell Beacon, Castle Fell, Mabbin Crag, Ashstead Fell, down to the A6 and returned down the valley.Chipstertrain06/09/2015
Parking in the lay-by just south of Huck's Bridge. Walk up to the Breast High Road (path on the verge), and a short distance along it, pick up a path alongside the fence which leads to the summit.moorsman18/06/2015
