How ironic that a summit guarded by high steel fencing and locked deer gates to the south should be so completely open from the north west! Easy roadside parking due west of Askham Bridge or in the church car park. Cross the river and take the signposted footpath running south. Almost immediately fork uphill and follow the wall until it reaches a small, easy to cross, locked gate. Cross this and continue until the wall turns east. There is open access into the first field. Continue along the wall through an unlocked deer gate. Head diagonally right up to the end of the skyline trees where there is unhindered access to the fields around the summit. This lies in a small field of rough vegetation which requires careful pushing through due to the large number of brambles. In this field the summit is easy to spot but hard to reach.moorsman16/07/2023
No need to climb any deer gates. We went from Lowther estate car park down towards the river and found our way round outside deer park perimiter through gates which would open. Second attempt so pleased to achieve this. The trick is keep close to the wall below the gardens, then turn left at end of deer fence and you can go up through an opening gate there (just east of the main woodland of the gardens. Diagonally over the open grass takes you up to the fence around the small pond by the summit and there is an opening pedestrian fence here. This area is used by various fun runs etc around the site so I am sure they are reasonably comfortable with access.nickywood103/04/2023
Parked in Hackthorpe and up public footpath to tree / grassy area with many paths. Eventually reached the deer fence.Minto28/10/2022
Roadside parking in Hackthorpe. Somewhat circuitous bridleway to the Lowther boundary deer fence. A challenge to reach this without taking a wrong path. Through the first deer gate then there is a second one on the right after a short distance. Luckily this was open so access was easy. Up the grass verge to the left to join a hard road heading for the summit. Just got within spitting distance when a contractor shouted and told me he was closing the gate in 5 minutes. Had to turn backmoorsman04/08/2022

Bridleway from Hackthorpe. Lovely spot.Wycombe Wanderer22/09/2018
Lowther Park from GR: NY 54381 23028. This was not easy to bag. Took the Bridleway from Hackthorpe to NY 53825 22121, turned right along estate road. After a cattle grid at GR: NY 53325 22213 took a minor path diagonally up hill to NY 53210 22331 then directly to summit. There is a stile on this side of the hill.ronaldo33304/11/2017
Parked in the Parish Hall carpark, walked in and out without seing a soul. HP seems to be in scrub on a fence line behind a large open-fronted storage barn. No views, didn't see a single deer, quite unremarkable.jonglew26/09/2017

A wild morning of rain and wind limited us to a short low level 2 hour walk close to our holiday cottage at Great Strickland. As we found a way into the private Lowther Park through two gates in the high deer fence the similarities with Jurassic Park, which we had watched the night before, were disturbingly similar. Thankfully we only saw a few nervous deer watching us. A rough track through a copse ran conveniently right over the top. A new building (barn/ yurt?) was being constructed next to the top (probably for the Kendal Calling music festival held in the deer park every summer). Luckily for us the workers were too busy clinging on to a giant tarpaulin in the gale that they were trying to lash over the half finished roof. We passed an estate worker eating his sandwiches in his tractor who returned our cheery wave, before we exited the private grounds by the castle. Then inspected the earthy Christmas gifts in the Castle shop -declining a taste of toffee vodka - yuk.Chris Pearson18/12/2014
From Hackthorpe, just off A6 on road to Lowther. First turning on left has parking area. Directly ahead road and gates are locked but to left out of car park is Lowther Park info board and f/p beyond. Followed this until necessary to cut across the deer park (large herd seen) with fences at both sides. Summit grassy banking area by fence in trees overlooking a small tarn, and wooden sheds nearby.Aye Jimmy03/12/2014
Grass W side of fence NY 53196 22541 282m; E side of wall NY 53147 22672 281m apparently similar elev. From NE, tarmac then gate thru fence. No signs but locked gate and seems private. RHW29/01/2012
