Farmer said it was fine to block the horse and cart gate at the cattle grid, so I did.Martin R01/02/2024
From north near cattle grid, faint path up through dead bracken with M in fading light. Would not want to do this one in summer.PeterD28/12/2023
A pleasant ascent from the cattle grid, especially as the bracken was down.JohnW08/03/2022

Wow, 2 of us on the same day.DC11main15/02/2022
Approached from SW, bridge over Duddon river. No path, initially trees and some undergrowth, then thick and high bracken with some scrambly rocks. Good views from top, which is a rock outcrop. Similar route down as no obvious better route , and onto a well deserved pint at the excellent Newfield Inn, before return to Hoathwaite campsite (lake Coniston ) over the Walna Scar route in the dark. With Richard and Tony G.Denise 03/09/2021
From the S by struggle through woodland then bracken. Good if hazy views. Now down for refreshment and sustenance at the Newfield Inn before setting back to Coniston via the Walna Scar road (which seemed to go much higher than I'd remembered!) With Denise and Tony.RichardM03/09/2021
Easy route from north before bracken seasonconanharrod21/02/2021
Easy walk from cattle grid on decent path, but would be hard when bracken has grown. Great viewpointtrimarc227/02/2020
Very easy walk along good paths from the cattle grid to the north (alt 157m). May be more problematic in the bracken season. No issues outside this period. 1.35km return. 30 minutes.moorsman08/05/2019
From cattle grid to N; surprised to find a path all the way to the summit. Starting to rain.Wycombe Wanderer02/03/2019
Wouldn't be so easy if the bracken was up! Wit B and R.jenx26/02/2019
With Jenx and Bryher hacking through dead bracken from parking to NE of the hill byspot height. Lovely summit area with expansive views down the valley and all sides.nordicstar26/02/2019
Up through the woods from the bridleway stone bridge to the south. Delightful walk; good scrambly fun. Left to the north and picked up the road.Moorponder01/01/2019
Parked at Seathwaite Church, along the beck, up from South side of Pen, back to bridge over Duddon, along to Wallowbarrow Crag, via Furness Way, then up to Wallowbarrow Heald and Iron Crag. TIP: when returning to Furness Way main track after Wallowbarrow, stay on left hand side of the big wall before the double gateway - much much easier up this left hand side (I did the right hand side and cussed - a lot!) A hard walk for something so low level as very tussocky underfoot. Again, ok re Bracken in December, would not enjoy in summer. Tough day, allow extra time.nickywood128/12/2018

From Wallabarrow Farm camping barn before departing after a cold night. E to the footbridge then roughly direct route to HP on faint tracks. Woods are sparse so don't present a barrier, but a lot of dead bracken and a bit scrambly in places.jonglew18/12/2017
Followed trod from cattle grid to the north. Descended south through the woods (one wall to climb) to join footpath back to the Newfield Inn. With Evan, Sail, Coel & Alfie.Dangerous Dave06/05/2017

Vague path from cattle grid at bend. Good hill on which to finish a fine dayColin Crawford01/04/2017
Parked at bend to NE and straight up hillside. Bracken replaced by bluebells at this time of year.Aye Jimmy03/06/2015

One of the many craggy lumps and bumps shaped by glaciers in this lovely valley. The tangle of dead low bracken was bad enough in December. good luck in summer! 4 hour round walk with L from Stickle Pike road top.Chris Pearson30/12/2014
With Jo, walk from Seathwaite: Pen and High Tongue (the high bracken only problem on these fells). Weather; cloudy, rain later, moderate visibility.amblerbob07/10/2014
