Quick visit to trig from road to east. | PeterD | 31/01/2023 |
Easy parking in a layby close to the start of the footpath to the east. Through a gate, alongside a building and a minute or so to the summit. | moorsman | 05/08/2022 |
Glorious views up the length of Longsleddale from here, and down towards Kendal. Manchester residents have a lot to thank this hill for - as its the site of the major Watchgate Water Treatment Plant which treats the water from Haweswater before sending it on its downhill gravity fed 63 miles to Manchester through a mix of tunnels and 4 buried pipes. Haweswater is 250m above sea level, Watchgate Treatment Works 200m, and Heaton Park 100m, allowing the water-flow along the whole aqueduct to be gravity-powered (after priming) with water being dragged along uphill sections by siphon. Recently once the water was witched off and they were trained in self rescue - engineers (nicknamed aquanauts) checked the inside of the tunnel by travelling through the tunnels on a buggy. They found much repair work to do and are now planning the HARP - Haweswater Aquaduct Resilience Programme. The site is manned permanently - such is its importance. | Chris Pearson | 20/09/2021 |
Lay-by then up road a little to gate and track through sheep pasture to trig and summit nearby. | Dugswell2 | 12/09/2021 |
simple walk at dusk after a day on the fells with Andy | colinfielding | 29/09/2020 |
Always feels a bit of a cheat where it's only a hundred yards or so from the car but needed the trig. | Walker Dan | 18/01/2020 |
Very easy top, park at the layby between the United Utilities depots and straight up track to side of building, summit by the fence line at top rather than the trig. | nickywood1 | 05/01/2020 |
Straightforward parking and ascent from the east. | JohnW | 02/05/2019 |
Visited high point and then trig on other side of fence. Easy roadside parking at top of road. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 09/12/2018 |
Field gate to ENE. HP possibly a few metres SW from the trig pillar, or on NE side of stock fencing 20m or so from the trig. Sheep pasture both side of the fence. | jonglew | 19/07/2018 |
Popped up on the way back after a walk in Longsleddale. Parked in layby between the 2 waterworks roads, over gate x2 and up to trig. Walked up other side of fence to get the high spot there (my GPS said this was the HP. 5 mins all told inc piccies. | Andrew Pearson | 22/02/2018 |

from Skelsmergh. Great views of Longleddale, Kendal and the Whinfell ridge | briandiggle | 26/12/2016 |
High Thorn Hill - Solo - parked just past first entrance of water works, jumped wrong gate! Had to come back. You want the field with the building with the massive metal doors on runners. Nice view. | dads | 24/04/2016 |
Here for the trigpoint. TP:UK log:

Parked at water works in passing place, climbed over gate and a quick walk down the track through an open gate and up to trig. Thought I might have to climb a barbed wire fence for a moment but then I spotted the gate. Quick find for a lakes trig! | thejackrustles | 01/04/2016 |
Hardest part was climbing gate from road to east.Good viewpoint, though. With Oscar. | catman | 20/10/2015 |
With Catman. | oscarrosie | 20/10/2015 |
From passing place to east, couple of gates to climb | citygent | 19/08/2015 |
Superb hill with great trig. Parked on old road by water works and simple stroll in fading light. Lights of Kendal shining bright below. Unfortunate barn being built nearby. | nordicstar | 10/02/2015 |
Parked near United Utilities' Watchgate plant. Short walk past new construction going on. High point is in the near field, trig S5669 on other side of fence. | Aye Jimmy | 01/02/2015 |
From Water Treatment Works. Summit conveniently in 1st field. | jimbloomer | 05/12/2014 |
With Jo, from Watchgate Water Treatment Plant: High Thorn Hill. Weather; cloudy, warm, good visibility. | amblerbob | 31/10/2014 |
Very dull. No views. No Challenge nothing. Also requires trespassing and hopping locked gates. Very much for ticking only. | mcbiydw2 | 20/09/2013 |
Second or third visit here, specifically to make a trig top plaster cast because it had, according to tpuk a complete raised letters central plug from logs only five months before. Imagine on this day, my frustration on finding plain plastic circle insert. Decided to make a cast anyway and afterwards decided to have some fun with this to reflect my experience. So I carved in to the centre to replace the words that would have been there, 'Ordnance survey triangulation station' with instead, 'Triangulation Pillock Frustration Station' so once I pressed clay into the plaster mould to make an art work from it, this is what it would say. Delighted with the results on the two ceramics I've made so far!! | vegibagger | 06/06/2013 |
Park at entrance to sewage farm. On narrow road, over a gate with barbed wire on top, stroll on grass to column 5669 at 15.10. | arranc | 08/10/2010 |
