Very wet this morning. Gave up after one more small hill. | Dusty | 25/10/2023 |
A long morning's walk with L out from home in Kendal and back again on f'paths and quiet lanes following the Mint. Approached from the back (north) off the Dales Way where there are some pink granite erratics alongside the path - caried here no doubt in the last glaciation from the Shap granite outcrop 10 miles to the north. Today the overhead power lines and pylons march alongthe same route and can be seen in the distance atop the Shap road (A6). A sudden engine noise over the hill was thankfully not the angry farmer on his quad bike approaching but an intercity train speeding around the foot of the hill on the west coast mainline. Great views N of the Whinfell Ridge, Sleddale, Potter Fell and S over the rolling pastoral landscape and woods to Morecambe Bay. | Chris Pearson | 17/09/2023 |
Didn't want to miss this due to an angry farmer (and parking by the gate would have have given the game away) so took a longer, but successful, route. Took the minor road up by Broadthorn to the west and when the road turns sharp right drive through the gate on the left (public road). Here there is easy parking on a wide grassed area. Follow the Dales way to New House then cut, unseen, straight across the field to the summit. 30 minutes but hidden. | moorsman | 05/08/2022 |
