From PROW to the south. No walls or fences. Descended to North on well worn path to gate onto access land, Scout Hill. | mart0797 | 24/01/2024 |
Room for one vehicle at SD 40953 94413. Choice of routes, easiest is the RoW to the Scout Hill access land and continue to gate at SD 40693 93727. It is possible to come back on the less interesting bridleway via an obvious path from summit to SD 40949 93520 | Martin R | 04/01/2024 |
A walk out of Windermere to bag the hill whilst meeting a friend at Winster | PhilipChaston | 21/11/2023 |
Parking as you enter Winter from the north ... opposite the private road to High House Farm. Go along the private road ROW and on to Winter House. Once around this you are in to Brisket Houses Wood, approaching Rulbuts Hill from the S. The ROW to Rosthwaite Farm should be taken, where a signpost a couple of hundred metres along it points to the hill summit. It goes through bracken and is occasionally marked by white posts. A lovely, easy walk. | summitter | 08/10/2023 |
Parked to the north, where the bridleway meets the main road. I found the route confusing at first especially as the green on the map is scattered deciduous trees rather than plantation. The best way is to take the left path at the first wall and approach from High House Farm. | JohnW | 10/05/2023 |
Parked at the start of the bridlepath SE of High Mill. Pulled off the road onto a track with space on the right almost immediately. Followed the bridleway eventually picking up a feint track to the summit. Track passes through deep bracken so may be difficult to spot in the growing season.. | moorsman | 21/09/2022 |
From bus stop at Ghyll Head via Rosthwaite Farm path from where path is conveniently signed. Then down to Winster. During descent met some excitable cows but thankfully the bull with them, was docile. I was on a public footpath and this type of incident should not happen | trimarc2 | 09/11/2021 |
We found this hill using the book Easy Walks to Lake District Views. We came up from Ghyll Head via Richard's Seat | RowanP | 20/07/2019 |
Parking at SD 4147 9419. Took the RoW running SW to SD 4098 9364 where a track leads off running past a pheasant nursery and eventually to the hill top. | jonglew | 25/10/2018 |
From bridleway to NE. Lots of regenerating natural woodland but worryingly encountered the first patch of Himalayan Balsam I've seen in the Lake District. Pulled up as much as I could, tearing my coat on the fence in the process. Saw a white pheasant. | Wycombe Wanderer | 07/10/2018 |
Winster church - RULBUTS HILL - Green Lane - Undermillbeck Common - Knipe Tarn - Cat Crag. Lovely walk on a beautiful sunny day. Snow everywhere. First Lakes walk of the year. | citygent | 07/02/2018 |

Jim B's route, helpful in the mist | nordicstar | 28/09/2016 |
1 of 6 Tumps on a circular 3hr run from Bowness before 10.00 am . Climbed at first light in early January having run/ walked from Bowness in the dark. Came at the summit from the east to avoid disturbing the owners /(dogs?) at Bellman Ground in the dark. Rough dead bracken -easier going under scattered silver birch trees. Waterlogged fields and drizzle down to Winster. | Chris Pearson | 08/01/2016 |

From 30m N of Winster phone box (park at complex junction). Follow bridleway to SD 4060 9341 where a signed, marked permissive path leads to summit. | jimbloomer | 25/09/2015 |

Joan, Peter and Ian. Friday 22nd. A visit to the shop to avoid Bank Holiday visits to Bowness. Then a day of painting & games - although it hardly rains all day. An evening walk onto the fell provides plenty of stimulus for further paintings. | PeteF | 22/08/1986 |
Roger 12, Robert, Peter, Ian and Mummy. May 28th Stratus clouds sit on the hills but the cloud is broken so we have a day on Consiton Old Man exploring the mines and enjoying the improving weather - a cold wind but visibility gradually improving - return via Brim Fell & Swirl How. Still enough energy to climb the fell after tea. | PeteF | 28/05/1984 |
April 14th. Arrive in blustery weather and after lunch we walk southwards over scout hill to Winster House and along to the ford where we saw a marsh tit building its nest. We heard several green woodpeckers and the wild primroses, daffodils and celandines are in flower. The pussy willow and hazel catkins are full of pollen and the horse chestnut buds are first bursting. | PeteF | 14/04/1984 |
