Circular from Cartmel | Jim.Fothergill | 25/02/2024 |
From Howbarrow farm. Sheep gathering taking place but the shepherd's did not seem to mind when I wandered off piste. The earworm song was Captain Beefheart's Ella Guru, not a tuneful ditty. | Martin R | 06/01/2024 |
..and splendour, splendour everywhere. Perfect little hill with close cropped grass and numerous little slabby rocky outcrops of best Lakeland slatey rock. Sublime evening views over a glistening Duddon estuary leading inland to the miniature giants of round shouldered Coniston Old Man and the deep shadowed cliffs of Dow Crag - looking like toy mountains from this distance. A lovely walk past the mill pond up from the SE near Cartmel racecourse which is very much a holiday course and despite its small size is often the third-highest attended jumps course in the UK annually; behind only Aintree and Cheltenham. Winners also receive the famous Cartmel sticky toffee pudding. | Chris Pearson | 21/09/2023 |
Solo from Cartmel Racecourse car park. Mount Barnard (access to the summit is obstructed by a couple of fallen trees), Howbarrow trig pt and Ellerside. A pleasant walk. Good views from the tops. | ADT | 25/06/2023 |
Along ridge south to north | trimarc2 | 11/01/2023 |
From parking at start of FP, indistinct in places, but then up to Trig point. On to the HP further north and then back across sheep pastures to Mount Barnard. | PeterD | 29/12/2021 |
Small pull-in suitable for 2 cars at the base of the zig-zag track to the west. Clear route to the top of the ridge and RoW reaches almost to the top. | moorsman | 14/07/2021 |
RoW from Holker. | Moorponder | 21/04/2021 |
A lovely walk from High Gate at Bigland Hall, then back. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 04/02/2019 |
From good parking at 36295 79181, the road end is not so good and potentially obstructs the farm. Cut down direct off Barnard Hill to this parking point too, after using the lanes to gain Ellerside and its companion trig, through the col to gain Barnard via gates. Rebuilt the wall near summit after some poor climber had caused a collapse ;) Summit looked out in the field to me | nordicstar | 13/01/2019 |
Small dirt parking at SD 3543 7921. RoW up through the woods not well marked and a bit overgrown low down. Took a direct line to the How Barrow trig pillar, then on to here across well populated sheep pastures. Picked up a RoW to return S for Mount Barnard next. | jonglew | 02/12/2018 |
Pleasant, easy stroll from Striber's Brow with beautiful pastoral scenery but couldn't help pondering how much a man-portable surface-to-air missile might cost. On to Mount Barnard. | Wycombe Wanderer | 09/06/2018 |
2nd tumnp of 9 on a 33.37km route from Cark to Ulverston climbing Mount Barnard then descending Nw through trees then along fenceline before climbing wall to gate and over to climb directly to the How Barrow Trig pillar, continuing to Ellerside, enjoying the views and climbing all rocky outcrops, recording 180m @ SD 35738 79721, 181m @ SD 35706 79735, 181m @ SD 35705 79722 and 180m @ SD 35701 79690- Really nice outcrops with expansive views!

Descent avoiding gorse, steeply Ssw then steeply through Ellerside Breast plantation to the road. Next tump: Old Park wood... | Dazingdale | 30/03/2018 |
Parked at the start of the bridleway track to the SW then followed track until out of the woods then directly up pasture to gap in gorse then trig. Continued on to bag Ellerside Tump on a lovely sunny morning. | Dugswell2 | 18/05/2017 |
Bagging the nearby trig. | BigJ | 07/11/2016 |

From sw, parking at start of footpath, path to pasture, up to trig, thru wall gap and along to summit. Back via Barnard. | RHW | 03/08/2015 |
Absolutely soaked fighting up to the trig through chest-high ferns in pouring rain, so there seemed little harm in the extra few hundred yards. | agentmancuso | 27/07/2015 |
From Mt Barnard to the south, with diversion to trigpoint S.5588 on How Barrow. Farmer spreading something (tiny white crystalline material) over whole area. | Aye Jimmy | 13/04/2015 |

From Cark via Mount Barnard. How Barrow was a finer top and I followed the ridge keeping on the west side of the wall until by the top where it was easy to cross and visit the highest point. | Jake994 | 21/12/2014 |
Good parking at road junction at SD 3628 7917. Detour to trig worthwhile as it's an even finer viewpoint. Went on to Stribers Brow returning on CC Way | jimbloomer | 30/05/2013 |
