13/16. A great public footpath through the heart of the lovely gardens with close views of the castle - no sign of its ghosts or annual Tom Fool -next week perhaps. Packed today on an early season hot saturday. Also passed the owl and hawk aviary - noted for its flying displays to paying visitors. Birds of prey are apparently noted for being workable and to build a relationship with. I'm sure they are stringent on regulations and bird' welfare but cant help wondering if its in the birds' best interest to have human visitors staring at them all day and the noise that brings -even if it does bring in money which can be (partly?)used for their conservation. A moral maze. No maze however following the firm 'keep to the public footpath' signs unless you are a paying visitor identified by a wristband (they even tag the visitors here). Up and back same way through the rhododendrons which make you appreciate spell checker. The Castle is a recipient of Govt Covid recovery financial help. | Chris Pearson | 26/03/2022 |

Arrived to climb this hill at 6am so parked on the slip road into the castle grounds alongside the post box. Well waymarked walk through the castle grounds (well you wouldn't want non-payers to see the sights would you?). Path ends at open pastureland with a short walk to the summit. 2.4km return, 40 minutes. | moorsman | 11/05/2019 |

1 of 2 hills today. My daughter and i stopped off at Muncaster Castle & gardens and this was after we had wandered around some of the estate and then followed the path up via the bluebell route onto the footpath to the open pasture, following the wall to the grassy knoll. I did climb over to the high ground inside the wall and i got the same gps reading. Re-traced steps to then go the Owl tea-room. | Dazingdale | 22/04/2017 |
Footpath through castle grounds then up field to top | Colin Crawford | 02/04/2017 |
RoW through the castle on path waymarked for Ravenglass. Once over castle boundary wall veered off due N to top of hill. HP could be either side of wall, both seemed same height. | jonglew | 05/03/2017 |
While Rob repeated Muncaster I drove into the Church (permissible?) near Castle, Tea Room advertised but resisted. Used the FP to Ravenglass and at col went through the gate then easily up wallside to summit. Hopped wall to return and explore ground there however feel that the field side is highest. | nordicstar | 04/12/2016 |

Through castle gates and f/p to right in front of office to edge of wood, gate then followed wall up. Highest may be by wall in field or over wall in wood near gnarly pine and oak. | Aye Jimmy | 15/06/2015 |
