| I've often seen the monument skylined in the distance while driving north on the A1(M). This time Sonja and I were on the way to Longhoughton but diverted to Penshaw to walk up the hill from the carpark. There are extensive views all round plus the monument itself (which is based on the Temple of Hephaestus apparently) plus a trig. | After visiting Seaton Delaval Hall, Lesley and i continued to visit Souter Lighthouse then Washington Old Hall and as this was nearby we made this our last stop-off, parking below with a set of steps leading upto this grand monument. We walked onto the top then i circuited it making sure i got the high point. | Detour from the Weardale Way (from Chester-le-Street). We were denied access onto the Right of Way from Victoria Viaduct around the side of North Farm by the resident. So had to take another detour pass Low Lambton Farm, then followed the road along the side of Penshaw up to the monument. It was a hot day.
