From small lay-by onA683 about 1/4 mile SW of gate opposite Holme Head and the track up the hill. Fairly straightforward across two fields to trip and summit. The gates can all be opened.
Some indication that there may have been a stand circle 100m north of trig where there are some earthworks. | Nick Caunt | 11/03/2024 |
As David Gradwell, parked in pull-in by gate & 2 oaks to NNW (E. side of road) at SD 58953 70106. Reduced road walk to the final 70m by using roadside gates at either end of field on left - Through wooden gate & up RoW to gate in field corner NE of barn - Along field edge to barn, through gate & across pasture to trig point & then summit. | gerrybowes | 13/01/2024 |
There is a parking place 200m north of the start of the footpath to the north west. Although there is a gate there is enough place to park a single car without blocking access. Pass through the gate and head diagonally uphill towards the correct line of the footpath. Once you reach it follow it up and through the first wall. There is an easy cross field route to the obvious barn where 2 gates give access into the summit field. | moorsman | 19/04/2023 |
Parked as jonglew at SD 58528 69291. Followed woodland edge to gap in stone wall at SD 58768 69381 then followed path to a gate at SD 58853 69491 which takes you to the summit field and a delightful pasture top. | DC11main | 15/02/2023 |
Starting from from Lyon Bridge the fp passes the impressive earthwork remains of Stede Castle motte and bailey. The Lune Valley has (oddly) the highest concentration of Norman motte and bailey castles anywhere in England, and Castle Stede (1086) is the most impressive. There is a saying in archaeology that a good site is a good site and as such a WW II pill box has been plonked alongside to fire on any invaders just as they curve off the bridge. Docile cows (for a change), short stretch of nasty main road to gain curving fp upwards. As others I curved more than the fp line to use gates to summit then back via the barn. Feeling weary on this simple climb as still trying to shaking off lingering Covid weariness. Take it easy the doctor said yesterday -well this should have been easy (normally). | Chris Pearson | 17/05/2022 |
Parked at Tatham Church and walked up lane, through farm and up the paths to leave footpath for very last field (gate opens) to trig area. | nickywood1 | 24/07/2021 |
with Andy round trip anticlockwise | colinfielding | 26/11/2020 |
Followed Jonglew's route up and round by the barn down. The barn route is definately easier. With Colin. | Andrew Pearson | 26/11/2020 |
Parking in small dirt layby WSW of the hill (SD 5853 6929). Circumnavigated the woodland, keeping to southern edge of Larch Plantation until due S of the hill top (SD 5911 6931) then made a direct line N to it. Apparently the trig pillar is lower; not obvious by eye. | jonglew | 01/10/2020 |
Took the AJ route over pastures. One bwf to negotiate. Otherwise straightforward. | Campbell Singer | 19/01/2020 |
Pulled in on side of road between Melling & Hornby. Followed AJs route. Headed for barn on the horizon. Thereafter TP is easily found. | Longwojo | 25/11/2018 |
Solo. Out and back. From car park in Hornby on S bank of river Wenning. Public footpath along N bank of Wenning, then E bank of Lune to Loyn Bridge. Then via Holme Head and Windy Bank Barn to summit.
This involves a short section on the A683. No footpath. Care reqd. | ADT | 11/01/2018 |
Same route as last bagger | bardolph | 19/06/2017 |
Parked on verge by A683 at SD 58953 70106. Walked south along road (care needed) to public footpath. At second gate turn right away from public footpath to third gate by barn. High point is ground 70m south of trig. | David Gradwell | 09/03/2017 |
20:30, darkening sky a mix of grey, blue and pink. Lush, pastoral belvedere all round from the summit that seems more than p55. A bullock tried to eat my shirt. | Wycombe Wanderer | 16/07/2016 |
Lots of cattle, but not near trig. | ngthack | 09/05/2016 |
From WSW. Excellent parking but route fiddly with a few brambles. | jimbloomer | 18/09/2015 |
With Jo, from Loyn Bridge: Windy Bank. Footpath to Holme Head Farm, then farm access road and track. All gates open, cows/calves safely penned in at farm. Weather; overcast, mild, moderate visibility. | amblerbob | 12/02/2015 |
Parked off road at SD 5854 6930 and walked through 3 gates walking along below the woodland and then around to the trig. Cut mark on the gatepost next to the parking spot. | Dugswell2 | 20/08/2014 |
Pleasant walk on footpaths from Loyn Bridge. Trig is on private land but gates are open from the path. Lots of cows around! | citygent | 01/08/2013 |
From layby to NW of hill, through gate, skirted around wood and past barn. Summit trig surrounded by large herd of annoying cattle, reading not taken. | Aye Jimmy | 03/08/2011 |
