Bike from Fairholmes then up to Alport Castle from Westend - nice scramble up NW ridge - with odd steep avoidable steps. Steeply down E side. Lovely bright day. On to Upper Hey via the Cutgate route. Lovely cold bright day. May have done 40 or so years ago but can't be sure. | steveb2006 | 07/03/2023 |

Climbed the south flank; steep grassy ascent. | Vulcan | 24/08/2022 |
Followed route in Hills of The Peak District by Barry Smith.
Parked at Howden Reservoir then took waymarked path through woods and then to the edge of moor. Turned left there and after a few hundred metres there is a good path down to the castles. Exciting on a windy day. | KevPalmer | 25/07/2022 |
From Fairholmes | The Playful Pig | 11/06/2022 |
Alport Castles from Ladybower (in the snow) | JHes | 19/02/2022 |
Roadside parking to NE (SK 1547 9281), room for a few cars. RoW to Alport Castles. Turned right (NW) at the escarpment and found a way down a narrow and steep gulley. Up the Tower from the NW (marginally scrambly in one place only), down and headed SE over some remarkably rugged and broken ground to regain the escarpment and the track back to car. 6k. | jonglew | 23/11/2021 |
From lay-by W of Alport Bridge on A57. The Tower, Alport Moor, Bleaklow Head and Higher Shelf Stones included before roughly following road back using permissive paths and footpaths. Good walking, even the parts tracing the road. | welshyboyo | 04/07/2021 |
Alport Castles- excellent from Rowlee Pastures. | NStanton | 29/05/2021 |
From fairholmes as road closed beyond. Makes quite a lot longer walk, so just the one today! | Nicky C | 09/05/2021 |
08:00, 4 degrees rising to 13, light cloud then sunny, very light NE breeze, with Bag For Life. Via Ditch Clough Plantation, Alport Castles and NW ridge. Very fine summit in impressive area by Derbyshire standards. Ate Etorki sandwiches for brunch then headed for Alport Moor. | Wycombe Wanderer | 24/04/2021 |
Parked to NE at start of forest track. ROW to Alport Castles, then down to The Tower - up and down NW corner. Great walk in clear sunny weather. | PGCE | 16/04/2021 |
Fun scramble on a sunny run up the ridge with Sal and Paul A. | davechaffey | 22/11/2020 |
Peak District completion | steve18566 | 23/06/2020 |
Walked up from Fairholmes car park at Derwent Reservoir. Interesting hill to get to, never mind climb! We found an easy way up from the NW. Excellent little peak. With Mark & Éire. | Dangerous Dave | 08/06/2020 |
Left a car by the A57 at Ladybower then drove to SK154927. Good track then path to Alport Castles. Headed NW along edge until easy to descend, then traversed up NW ridge and down SE gully. Back to high ground and over 2 more Tumps on the way to the A57. | mae2 | 06/03/2020 |
Very tight parking due South on North side of A57 at Alport Bridge SK141895. With Liam. | David Evans | 28/10/2019 |
Parked to the NE at edge of upper Derwent Reservoir. Then up good track through woods to Alport Castles then descend and around to the north side to follow GAs route on a cool sunny morning. Then back up and along to bag West End Moor trig and Alport Moor. | Dugswell2 | 11/04/2019 |
Snowy ascent on crisp winter's day. As we picked our way over the snowy landslide blocks in the small valley, we wondered if we were here on the wrong day- but it was a delightful scramble and with Kahtoola spikes we could stand on top of both towers- the southern one is slightly higher, we thought.Memorable and recommended little hill. | Denise | 30/01/2019 |
Most enjoyable in the fine winter conditions. | RichardM | 30/01/2019 |
3 of 4 on 21 mile epic walk including crook hill, bridge end pasture, the tower and Alport moor with Jordan | The-Z-Man | 10/11/2018 |
With Sheffield Mountaineering. From Birchin Clough Bridge car park on the A57. A lot of fog on the way back and finished in darkness, but some sun and blue skies earlier. A nice scramble with the group. | Lazylizzie | 04/11/2018 |

The Tower and Alport Moor, from Derwent Reservoir. | BobHancock | 15/04/2018 |
Led a walk through the Alport valley and took in a few scrambles on the Tower. | simonshrewsbury | 25/02/2018 |
from Fairholmes at Ladybower | davestillravin | 28/01/2018 |
From Alport Bridge, via the gully on the west face, probably the easiest route of ascent. | RedAndy54 | 27/01/2018 |
Very damp and slippy underfoot but great nonetheless. Went up gulley on the North-West face but will return to do alternatives on a dry day!! Fabulous and probably the hardest tick in the Peaks? With Mart. | John Eley | 10/06/2017 |
With Jo, from Fairholmes: through coppice to Lockerbrook Outdoor Centre, then across Rowlee Pasture, returning down Ditch Clough and alongside the reservoirs. Weather; sunny, warm, good visibility. | amblerbob | 23/04/2017 |
Cant remember date. bagged with sean | jordanwalmsley1987 | 17/02/2017 |
Derbyshire's answer to Tryfan. From Alport Bridge to farm and cross river. Impressive rocky ridge. Took the advice of others to approach summit up nw ridge. Relatively easy scramble but rock was wet and greasy requiring care. Penultimate Derbyshire Tump. Would have been a good final hill. | Campbell Singer | 01/02/2017 |

Mountain Bike Ride from Ladybower up to Alport castles | MarkGD | 04/09/2016 |
Pleasant evening stroll in drizzly conditions. Very impressive summit but ascent from NW ridge is fairly staightforward. | RobertP | 21/08/2016 |
More like Arizona than Derbyshire ! | Mark Sims | 29/05/2016 |
1/3 Best climb of second day of 3 day weekend of climbing. Not to be tried in wind and rain though as can be tricky (The Tower/Winter Hill/Winter Hill Boundary) | Fergalh | 01/05/2016 |
Solo. Best bit of the day. Not the usual well trodden path that i have come to expect with the good stuff. Thickish cloud and voices carrying from the path above made it that bit more eerie. | Aimless Rambler | 18/03/2016 |
Parked off A57 by Alport Bridge - room for 3-4 cars if parked carefully - at SK 14132 89558. WARNING - it's tricky to get back onto the main road from this spot as visibility is very restricted. Took RoW by footpath and track up lovely Alport Valley to the farm, then down on RoW over bridge and steeply up on path beside wood. Then diverted north-west on a faint path to barbed wire fence (a few stones make crossing easy). Then steeply up to SSE ridge of the hill. Worked round west side through boulders, then up a steep gully. Then an easy scramble from the north west up grippy rock with good holds to summit tors. Returned the same way to the col. Then worked way carefully round the boulder fields east and north of the hill, and back to join outward route past a pool. With MP and JK on a survey. | Man of Kernow1 | 11/10/2015 |
Walked up here from Ladybower while doing a 10 mile walk. Not too warm and clear skies. | dave-harris | 23/05/2015 |
A classic, done it twice now. | Adrian | 26/04/2015 |
Beautiful afternoon, so headed for my last point in Darbeyshire. Found faint track up NW ridge, and just managed to hobble / scramble to the top. | GordonAdshead | 14/04/2015 |
Not completed today, but attempted - it's a bit more awkward than photos make it look ;) Windy conditions and slippery ground from yesterday's rain. Got close to the top, but then what had been a fairly challenging scramble turned into something approaching a vertical climb that I couldn't see an easy way around. No time to try alternative routes, will probably return on a better day! | the_adam | 30/03/2015 |
The most beautiful (and tricky) little hill in the Peaks. | dromeas | 07/09/2014 |
Tight parking at N side of A57 next to Alport Bridge. Track N for nearly a mile to farm, then down to footbridge over beck. Been described as a 'hidden' gem - true. It's only when you get to within about 200m that you realise what it is: a peak on the outer rim of huge old quarry or more likely, a landslip. Grassy ridge leads from SE to short airy scramble to summit. Easier to descend (or ascend) to NW. | Aye Jimmy | 17/07/2014 |
What a little gem! Nice scramble before continuing to Bleaklow Stones and Barrow Stones. | citygent | 06/05/2014 |
A four summit circular starting off with this one. The most epic little hill so far. The South East tower appears higher. Amazing views from the top, fortunately it wasnt too windy otherwise it would have been a bit scary standing on top of the rocky pinnacle.
Parked up at the Snake pass near Blackden view farm, walked a bit along the road to access the fp that then leads into the Alport valley, over the small footbridge and then up the fp. I veered off to get a different view of the Tower and then climbed it from a gully on the sw corner. This took me up and around to the summit. I carefully descended down a steep grass and boulder strewn slope just in front of the Tower summit and walked through the boulder field to regain the FP. | Dazingdale | 18/04/2014 |
With Vic & Bob. Finest hill in Derbyshire. Brilliant. | ngthack | 27/11/2013 |
Birthday walk to Alport Castles in the mid-day sun | Mypoorblisters | 07/07/2013 |
Parked at the small parking area alongside the main road, then doing a circular walk, starting at Doctors Gate, taking in all the tops on, or close to, the route. | moorsman | 20/03/2010 |
uncertain of exact date. | thenomad | 21/10/2009 |
Date just a guess. Great hidden gem of the peak this. | Flipperfeet | 15/07/2008 |
Via Crook Hill. | Wheelsy | 23/07/2005 |
Often included in walks nearby as this is too good to resist. Usually climb up the prominent gully on the SE side or the ridge on the W side. Airy and greasy. Most spectacular top in Peakland? | Jake994 | 31/05/2004 |
superb little summit; rise measured c.34m from col to E, but col to SE appar 1-3m higher; prob qualifies; better data needed. from A57 car pk 141894 | RHW | 25/01/2003 |
Date approx - first year university | Ashley | 01/01/2001 |
Solo run and scramble after work on beautiful sunny evening. An impromptu ascent up the tower when I saw it for the fun / curiosity factor not knowing if it had been done before. A great spot. | Chris Pearson | 19/08/1992 |
