Parked S of Hollingworth Farm and walked up through access land from the E. | JK | 24/10/2021 |
Walked up from Marple via Mill Brow, Ayton Farm and the Pennine Bridleway. Driving rain most of the way, but it stopped as I neared the top. Left with a howling Southerly and good views below the cloud at about 500m. Access near the top is confused, but the walls are not competent, so the access land is accessible. | Peter_W_Mitchell | 21/05/2021 |
With Gareth - Needed a bit of air. Ascended from parking area to the north in road between Plainsteads farm and Butcher's Piece farm. Sunny with big grey clouds moving quickly in the brisk wind casting shadows over the surrounding landscape. Magical place to sit enjoy a coffee and contemplate the view. | briandavies | 21/06/2020 |
Straightforward from SE. | Wycombe Wanderer | 15/06/2020 |
12.7 mile circular from layby on A624, followed footpaths onto Cown Edge, walked along the edge then headed for Knarrs (very easy to bag with no walls/fences in the way), descended to road then followed path to Kinder Reservoir, climbed steeply up onto Sandy Hays, then went to the downfall which was completely dry, turned back up to The Edge trig point then across dry moors, descending Kinder and onto Mill Hill (4th time bagged), then headed back to the layby via Mill Hill plane wreck and Harry Hut trig. Clear and sunny but hot, plenty of people about, good views north to the South Pennines, Pendle Hill and you could just make out Ingleborough on the horizon, views west over Manchester and towards the Clwydians in Wales. | DanTrig | 02/06/2020 |
Rocky edge to field. great moorland views. last of 8 tump circuit, lovely to be out again as lockdown eases | Denise | 14/05/2020 |

With G. From Glossop > Whitfield > Gnat Hole > Chunal > Matley Moor (Knarrs) > Robin Hood's Picking Rods > Cown Edge > Glossop via Hobroyd Fm. | RT1970 | 28/12/2015 |
Bus into Nottingham, train to Stockport and bus to Hayfield, walking on the Calicot trail to minor lane then taking track to Mill onto fp past Cliffbank farm, joining up with Pennine Bridleway at SK026 889. Pennine Bridleway followed to bend with intersection of fp's at SK022 905 then used access land (past three horses) climbed over fence at intersection and then straight up to rough grassy summit. I also visited the grassy knoll and it does appear to be the same height. Return over wall (where wooden barricade has been nailed together) and back to Pennine bridleway. | Dazingdale | 19/10/2015 |
Easy enough using fp from north veering off through gaps in wall. Horses had nibbled away half the wooden steps of a stile. ( they often do the same with wooden fences). Good stark view across to brooding Kinder under low cloud. | Chris Pearson | 06/08/2015 |
On Lantern Pike circuit | Mypoorblisters | 21/06/2015 |
Peak bagging after work - Robin Hood's Picking Rods, Cown Edge and Knarrs. Sadly ran out of daylight after that! | the_adam | 20/03/2015 |
This top is actually called 'Knarrs' (meaning look-out), not Matley Moor. I was actually brought up in the farmhouse that owns the hill and the surrounding land, so I know! :D | chrissiedixie | 07/03/2015 |
From bend in dead-end lane to W near horse-boxes. About 0.5km to top, which is either rough grass or a prominent bump near a wall-end 20m away. | Aye Jimmy | 27/04/2014 |
From E; RoW passes R of house near summit. Rough grass: cairn to E is lower | RHW | 26/04/2014 |
