From Sumner Street car park, along to end of street & then ESE along tarmac path for about 120m to junction with woodland path - Up & along path to bwf at SD 94059 08245; bottom strands have been cut so easily under it - Up over pasture & through wide gap in bwf to unmarked summit. | gerrybowes | 25/10/2023 |
Parked in Sumner Street car park, walked to end of street and into the community nature area below the wood. Found paths part way up and then onwards to the summit. Later walked around the RoW to the south as part of my walk where the woman with the two alsations came out and glared at me whilst the dogs tried to break the fence down. Once you are gone she clicks her fingers and the dogs go silent, but she won't do anything when you are there. Completely unacceptable behaviour to people walking on a RoW, but it is well marked if little used. I would avoid approaching summit from the RoW for that reason. | meltdiceburg | 19/06/2023 |
Had two attempts at this one, both from the Sumner St CP. walked up road to east into community park and followed path around until a route went uphill, this eventually led to stile with BWF into pasture, followed edge of wood uphill and then to trig and HP. Previous day had gone up road to FP and through farm where I was harranged for wanting to go to top. | PeterD | 11/10/2021 |
Shaw Side [Birshaw S2772] from GR: SD 93620 08392, tarmac path to SD 93946 08355, up through trees then 2x 3 wire BWF both easy to crawl under. | ronaldo333 | 27/09/2021 |
Parked in Sumner Street Car Park. Along Road onto track, left track by large damaged tree, path off right across BWF then staying low until ground eases. Path up to tree then fence and on to top. | Bramley | 22/07/2020 |

7 of 8 on 21 mile grueller bike ride. Through the woods and up a really steep ascent at back end of woods | The-Z-Man | 15/07/2019 |
Easy parking down Sumner Street in Oldham. At end of street follow a path on the right leading into the wood. The later you leave the summit ascent the easier it is to reach it. Wait until the path descends downhill then climb the less steep bank up to the fence at the top. Cross easily at the fence junction then it is an easy 2 minutes to the summit. An easy 20 minute route | moorsman | 07/03/2019 |
Did early morning in the dark and drizzle from the car park at the end of Sumner Street then along path in nature reserve, up thru woods and over fence to summit and trig. With Mart | John Eley | 22/12/2018 |
From Sumner Street. Parked at east end. Just enough room. Up through beech wood and over two easy bwf. No problems. | Campbell Singer | 11/11/2018 |

3rd hill of four today and my penultimate Oldham Co. hill. Walked from a private house in Milnrow where I stayed overnight courtesy of Airbnb to Moss Gate then across to Crompton Moor before heading over via the Crompton circuit (veering off to take a straighter line near Black Lad) heading West to follow Metrolink line South to crossing and from there straight up to summit. Trig is further down. I took a permissive path on the West side of the Metrolink, signed Twingate. I lost my Gps signal around here but managed to weave my way through the estate heading for the side of Asda and then through an Industrial estate to arrive at the Metrolink station, where i took the next tram to Derker to climb Oldham Edge. | Dazingdale | 04/12/2016 |
on a four mile walk around the area with Oldham Edge | joseph mitchell | 05/11/2015 |
Derker to Newhey. No animals here today although had a close view of a low flying skein of geese at Old Bank Farm on the approach. | Smudge | 31/10/2015 |
Overgrown duckboards through marsh so took to field to avoid jungle bashing up fp. Animal encounters started with a bit of a stand off with a goat, then bellowed at by a cow and then skimmed at head height by a flock of racing pigeons which wizzed past my head with a swoosh as I used the dead ground to sneak up on trig keeping out of sight of the house. The worst though was the 3 alsation dogs which went mad barking and jumping up at an all too low garden fence. The lady owner just came out and stared at me suspiciously on my return and did not return my greeting or try to quieten her 'guard'dogs, despite my being on a signed ROW. I guess they are just security conscious and don't see many ordinary walkers. | Chris Pearson | 05/08/2015 |
Uncomfortable GOML trig tick! Long story. | vegibagger | 23/05/2015 |
Parked on Summer Street, then along track, then up through wood to trig and then summit | Dugswell2 | 01/05/2015 |
Parked down a side street off B6194. Footpath East through a stinky marshy hollow with duck board. Up through buildings to summit & trig. | ngthack | 28/01/2015 |
Caught the tram to Shaw then round the back of a factory and along the Crompton Circuit. A nice steep slope from the infant River Beal. No problem finding the top or the trig save for a few friendly cows. | Jake994 | 24/09/2014 |
Grumpy landowners take care not to stray | bluewater | 04/07/2014 |
Small carpark at end of Sumner St. next to main road. Followed street to end, then Nature Area f/p down into wood. After short way struck up through trees to barbed wire fence, easiest to get past this further to L. Followed another fence to trig, then summit a little further on, long grass in field. | Aye Jimmy | 11/05/2014 |
