1 of 4 parked outside Whittington park in unstone green. Followed paths to get to industrial estate then into combat wood before finding a path not on is maps that leads to the top. Sat a while and enjoyed the views with the sound of gunshots off in the distance | The-Z-Man | 23/09/2023 |
From industrial estate. ROW almost to field, then up path in wood. Emerge into open field and soon reach summit. | PGCE | 28/06/2023 |
Bike from Sheepbridge. Climb up thru wood on foot to pop out pretty much at highest point. First hill with Highfield and Moortop | steveb2006 | 07/09/2022 |
Same route as Moorsman. | PeterD | 28/07/2022 |
Cobnar Hill from GR: SK 35937 75506 | ronaldo333 | 25/11/2021 |
Good advice from Mark Sims. Followed path to near end of wood then turned left along a cabby path then up steeply and nice promenade along summit ridge. Followed edge of wood back to path. Surprisingly peaceful up there. | Wycombe Wanderer | 24/09/2021 |

Parked alongside the start of the path on the industtial estate. Really is best (especially in summer) just to follow the excellent path all the way through the wood. Then, when you reach the field just turn left and follow the edge of the trees upwards. You will need to cut through the corner of the trees when you reach the hedge on the top of the ridge. A direct route through the trees to the summit is slower due to the vegetation. | moorsman | 11/07/2020 |
From Highfield - sun eve run. | davechaffey | 19/09/2019 |
From industrial estate, footpath into woods then over bramble / bracken area and steeply up through beech trees to scarp edge. Root crop in field to S. High point on woodland / field boundary. | RichardM | 21/11/2018 |
Tried it from Barlow as a pre-wedding leg stretch. A straightforward walk from the village church, along a farm track to almost the top. | summitter | 24/03/2018 |
Cool, grey and misty walk after parking in the industrial estate. High point looks in the field rather than field edge. | Dugswell2 | 09/01/2018 |
Parking by p/f SK359754. Follow path West, then SW, and pick way Southish to wood edge and into summit field. | David Evans | 07/01/2018 |
From Highfield hill. Rushed job to catch next bus to Unstone. | Martin R | 14/02/2017 |
From industrial estate, pleasant stroll through woodland. | RobertP | 04/12/2016 |
From the industrial estate through pleasant mixed woodland and up steep slope to field summit. Woodland work caused track to be very churned up. | Campbell Singer | 02/10/2016 |
Despite reading Mark's log I still went for the wrong footpath! Lost half an hour trying to make my own route across through thick brambles, and only found the good paths on the way back. Just after a fallen tree the path splits into two forks, take the left one for an easier time :) | the_adam | 29/09/2016 |
Don't do what I did and take the wrong path from the industrial estate . The correct one is at the northern end by a bus stop and bridge over the river next to the QCL factory. This takes you around the edge of the estate trending left to tackle the steep woodland. | Mark Sims | 11/03/2016 |
An 18km circuit over 4 Tumps from Old Whittington: Hardwick Hill, Moortop, Highfield Hill, Cobnar Hill. Ascended directly through the woods from the north. Descended NE to reach trading estate. | davidpettit84 | 13/02/2016 |
2nd hill of Four today on a circular from Dronfield station with Lexy Rue the black Labradoodle, having climbed Highfield Hill. Took track South over A61 past Monkswood farm, over Barlow Brook and took fp towards Cobnar wood but branched off to walk up field edge at SK353753 and at top followed edge and around to break in stone wall where i entered a small section off woodland before walking in the field alongside the woodland. The summit does appear to be about 30 metres out into the field. Descent South across open field following woodland fringe South and then East and where it bends NE we crossed a small section of open scrub to walk along a dismantled railway and where vegetation blocked our way we climbed into shallow gully with stream in and followed this till reaching steep banks of Kings wood. We took a variety of paths to emerge at Ind estate. | Dazingdale | 05/10/2015 |
Thank goodness for footpath signs indicating the start into the wood from the large trading estate (by the lovely plastic mouldings and polyurethane factory) but then a lovely open wood with several paths including one heading steeply straight up to pop out onto the edge of the summit field with no fence or wall to cross and avoids the holly bushes. A popular wood for those who like to carve their initials on trees. | Chris Pearson | 24/07/2015 |
Parked in trading estate. Along very muddy path & up field edge. At wooden cross, cut through wood then left along field edge to summit. GPS gave 354751 not 354750. Beware huge amounts of dog excrement on path. Why do dog owners think it's OK not to pick up their dog waste when they are in the countryside? | ngthack | 27/01/2015 |
As previous logger, but slight detour because some 'woodland restructuring' (tree felling) going on 'to improve the wood for wildlife'. Highest point at edge of crop field (green shoots) next to wood. | Aye Jimmy | 28/10/2014 |
From 359754: If yu look carefully there is an old track snaking through the woods going right up to the top. | GordonAdshead | 23/07/2014 |
From Sheepbridge. | Wheelsy | 10/07/2013 |
From NW, field edges then thru corner of wood. Field / woodland edge. | RHW | 17/03/2013 |
field by woodland | Adrian | 18/02/2012 |
With K and baby W from Highfield Hill. As others have said, an OK route is via path up W side of wood | Ashley | blank |
