Forest track past quarry to 471461. Then a recently flailed path to above the trees. Then a grassy ramp heading west to near the top. Along to Low Craignell and down to shooting range NE of quarry using path shown on Harveys but not OS. (The flailed path looks as if it continues all the way along the north side of the forest to meet the descent route)daviemore23/10/2023
From hairpin bend to E; good parking S. side of bridge - Along forest track to junction with firebreak & path at 520751 - Along path, turned left at junction with a grass track & picked a spot to start heading up to col - Tried to pick out grass areas but mostly dead tussock - On reaching col, managed to pick up an intermittent path to summit which keeps to the higher, better ground.gerrybowes10/05/2023

Followed D Dave's route. Forest road to a gate where an overgrown track/path climbs between Winter Hill and Low Craignell. From its high point we took deer tracks up to this minor top then along the undulating ridge to Darnaw. After doubling back to Craignell it was a straightforward descent SE from the summit to the forest road. 2.5hrs.summitter27/01/2023
Parking area at hairpin bend, SW side of Clatteringshaws Loch, 534752. Forest road then track to foot of Low Craignell. Deer tracks up to this minor top. Along undulating ridge to Darnaw (472m) then finally up to the unmarked summit of Craignell. Descended SE from col to firebreak then back along Forest road. Solo.Dangerous Dave15/01/2023
My final Marilyn in the south of Scotland. Wet and misty.Crumblie204/10/2022
Parking at bridge NX534752. Forest roads to locked gate at Polran Burn. Faint path through trees to NX525755, then nowt but steep tough pathless veg. Intermittent path along ‘ridge’ to top. No better path seen from summit. Followed wide grassy slope down SE flank to W end of previous forest road. Tough veg everywhere.Isbjorn14/05/2022
The forest road spur which ends just west of due south has been extended and is a useful approach.Alan Moore13/01/2022
Repeat for new summit location. Along track from quarry. There are at least 3 wide gaps through the trees leading to a path running parallel to the track. Took the first one at the high point of the track, with a small path, probably used mostly by deer. From the far side side of the trees all routes up seem steep and rough going thru bracken, heather, tussock grass a a few rocks.govanah11/11/2021
Tracks from P at 535752 all the way to 505745 (though the initial 200-300m heading SW from the car is very overgrown now). Short ascent then of SW ridge.49pp12/06/2021
From Black Loch car park. An ill-advised outward route, and a much better return route (which would have been the outward route too, if it hadn't been for the encounter with an earth mover extending the forest track). Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2021/06/craignell-nx509751-477m.htmlGayle10/06/2021
From Black Loch forest car park (NX 4992 7300). Fell of Talnotry -> Poultrybuie Hill -> Munwhul -> Darnaw first, then a pleasant high level walk amongst the lochans across to here. On to Brockloch Hill for a 10 mile round across a lot of very bad ground.jonglew05/05/2021
Parked at Hairpin bend near Quarry on lakeside road. Through forest and steeply up SE side of Craignell. Descended over rough ground to Darnaw, down to Forest Road, back to car in 2.5 hrs.jigglybones07/03/2021
From Clatteringshaws Loch via track to west of Winter Hill. Descent via Sheuch of Lammashiel.vuirich14/08/2020
murrays monument, fell of talnotry, poultrybuie hill, munwhul, darnaw, craignell repeat, brockloch hill, from the cp.robertphillips04/03/2020
Parked at the hairpin bend, then on the logging track past the quarry to 520751. Slightly down on an ATV track, then up to a path heading briefly SW until a not-too-bad looking way up which turned out to be a steep shite fest of tree stumps, brash, long grass and tussocks, easing only high up where deer tracks lead eventually to the top. Descent SW from the top, past a small crag to a dip below a rise in the ridge. This dip gives access to the rake (see 1:25K map) heading roughly ENE. Good deer tracks show the way down on dry grass, no need to encounter tussocks. A short section of tree stumps below give access to an overgrown track in the firebreak to join the logging road at 514749. The descent is likely to be better as a way up.Gill21/08/2019
8th top of 11 on a 30km route from Auchenleck car park to Murray's Monument, climbing Bennan Hill, Gairy of Pulnee, Millfore Sw top, Millfore, Munwhul, Cairngarroch and Darnaw, heading South past lochans to record 478m on an outcrop @ NX 51006 75223 and 478m on an outcrop @ NX 50988 75167, Cairn was about 2m lower. These recordings were taken after visiting the Southerly top and then going back to the Northerly top to re-record. Rain had stopped temporarily. Descent down Sw ridge to Craigensalliard then curving forest ride to reach Craigencallie Glen and a tricky crossing of the Corse Burn (track over not found) then route through new plantation before picking up remnants of old track, heading for Poultrybuie Hill....ps I did walk over the given grid ref too!Dazingdale26/08/2018
With Franni Baggins. From 534752 to end of forest track at 514749 then directly upwards to summit. Rough, but not as rough as the other hills in the area!raffemeister14/08/2018
From Lillie's Loch track C/Pk with Steve G. Followed mapped track to above Winter Hill then over Low Craignell to summit. Descended through rock bluffs towards the broad ride heading for the forest road terminus near the head of Lillie's Lock then took the rougher loop along the lochside to rejoin the road near the quarry.Smudge26/03/2018
Revisit between Munwhul and BrocklochRHW25/03/2018
From the hairpin on Clatteringshaws lock to the south. Track past quarry followed along to obvious break in trees, then up steeply to a humocky summit. Very cold wind even in the sunN.Morters17/03/2018
After spending the night in the motorhome at Glen Trool, drove to the car park for the Raiders Road. Followed forest tracks then faint ATV track before short steep ascent to summit where I enjoyed sunshine. Returned by slightly different route, unintentionally !NormanW20/10/2017
P at bend 1k along Clatteringshaws road, forest track to the end where it becomes a convenient narrower path for a bit then straight up. On to Darnaw.agentmancuso23/09/2017
From Munwhul. Not too bad down to the pylons. Went round the south side of Bennan, that was a bad move through forestry. Returned over Bennan, much better, then down to the pylons, picked up a reasonable but very wet grassy path north by the pylons to the Craigencallie road.Owen B21/05/2017
Parked at 534752. Left the gravel road at 520751 and after the ride headed diagonally up steep slopes to the ridge. Solo. Easier to descend directly to the end of the forest road. Just over 2 hours and under 4.5 miles.bolton02/05/2017
Via track from Clatteringshaws Loch. Went up onto plateau to soon, should have gone further along track and taken a more direct route up to the summit.AndrewFinnimore18/04/2017
From Clatteringshaws Loch on tracks to 516748 - firebreak/drainage ditch - steep slopes to summit.Chris Peart22/07/2016
From the north via Darnaw. The continuation to Craignell is uneven and crosses several perpendicular ridges; from the summit, the approach from the south east looked better.Topographer5704/06/2016
Continuation of walk from Darnaw. Headed west on rough ground over a number of intervening ridges to reach the unmarked summit. Returned by outward route. With JdF and CE.Man of Kernow104/06/2016
From North, over Darnaw. Single track road to x roads, then forestry road to left and up to high point. Easier terrain. Dry, partly sunny, warm, calm and good views. 2020 top shifted, notes say I accidentally walked across top, via Darnaw.iangalbraith15/05/2016
From Black Loch along by the Tonderghie Burn, climbing up into trees (follow edge of plantation) and getting a little lost before gaining ridge to summit. Continued to Darnaw.neimcv12/05/2015
Climbed from Darnaw and then continued to Munwhul.chriswatson27/04/2015

From the quarry SW of the hills. Low Craignell, Craignell and Darnaw.borderterrier26/04/2014
parked at GR502771, w Jenx followed w difficulty line under pylons. V rough, wet, tussocky ground. Battled to end of woods then back on a rising traverse using drainage line. Steep heather/bracken to gain tops. Not easiest of lines but good weather and Darnaw followed.nordicstar24/08/2013

Solo from Black Loch car park. Followed the forest track winding round underneath Poultrybuie Hill & then struck off NW directly at Millfore. The ground here is relatively forgiving considering that it's Galloway! Much less rough than expected. There is a belter of a view N over Merrick & the Rhinns of Kells & the wide strath leading up to Loch Doon. The Carsphairn & Afton hills all very prominent too. Wandered E across to Craignell for nothing more than a bag really. Following the SW ridge down leads to a firebreak with a track back to Black Loch.NotReallyABagger18/09/2008

Parked at Clatteringshaws Loch. Forest road to junction where extensive quarrying was taking place. Gingerly over debris to foot of unplanted steep slopes and up to horizon. View ahead to top with many drops and ups over rough heather. Mallards in small lochan. Cairn not at highest point. 12.15. 509750.arranc14/02/2004
