From Aucharnie Bridge, parking on verge after a very wet month was better than nearer Kilwhannel further up the road. Easy walking up track- an old right of way- to summit for decent views on a fine day. Returned via Smyrton Hill and Benawhirter- a nice pasture ridge with a trod to follow over the tussocky pasture with ridge's HP. | pwheeler | 20/03/2024 |
Parked end of road at Dave`s spot. Followed track up. Onto Kilmory hill, Big Fell and Smyrton Hill. Glorious day, cold but fine. | colazione | 03/12/2023 |
Parked at the end of the public road, a T-junction with the hill track and the private road to Kilwhannel. Room enough for one vehicle without causing an obstruction. Followed track all the way to the summit. Solo. My final Section 28 Marilyn! | Dangerous Dave | 17/10/2023 |
Same as gerrybowes. Farmers wife said No to parking in farm yard. Dry underfoot at present time. | willyross | 10/06/2023 |
On track from Kilwhannel. | Winterfloodian | 18/09/2022 |
Easy parking on hardstanding, 70m NW of track to Kilwhannel at NX 1108 8137 - Apart from a slightly boggy area around 126793, a decent track to within 200m of the summit & then NE on path/ATV track to trig point. Lots of contented cattle & calves enjoying the autumn sunshine. (S) | gerrybowes | 20/09/2021 |
From the South. Private Rd sign at NX 1311 7317, 3.5km before Lagafeter Lodge. Drove past and parked 700m before the Lodge in small quarried area (NX 1387 7529). There were no other parking areas before the lodge. With hindsight would have done this from the NW as others, and combined the walk with some South Ayrshire hills - too focussed on D&G at the moment. | jonglew | 02/08/2021 |
From Kilwhannel. Great views. | vuirich | 30/08/2020 |
Parked on grass just before gate to Kilwhannel farm. Track all the way to the summit, passed ruined tracked lorry and onto gate near summit. 50m passed gate, an ATV track leads to trig. On way back, endured a thunder and lighting storm and arrived back at car soaked. Good views from summit. Trip 115 mins | Coinneach | 27/08/2020 |
From Kilwhannel, track till just past the Hitachi truck then across the moor to Milljoan Hill via ss4 Millcroon. Sleet & hail at times. Back to Beneraird and on to Kilmoray. | agentmancuso | 18/01/2020 |
With Judy from the south via the Lagafater Lodge track. Operated ham radio on VHF for SOTA. | G4OBK (Phil) | 04/01/2020 |
Was staying at Lagafater estate and went for a walk up the hill with Tony and a few cans to enjoy the view | richie_macdonald | 12/10/2019 |
From Kilwhannel to NW (12:05) took increasingly rough track past quite a lot of cows - fortunately timid - to near summit, then direct to top. Dry but mist on top and track and vegetation wet. Finish 14:15 | dbb | 27/07/2019 |
After Knockdolian. Parked at Kilwhanel. 1 hour up. 45 mins down. | Longwojo | 02/06/2019 |
From NW. Track up from Kilwhannel goes all the way to the summit. Alternately cycled and pushed until track became too wet and degenerate for my bicycle to continue. Views included Ireland and Isle of Man. | Topographer57 | 15/10/2018 |
P verge before Kilwhannel, easy along the track, with Fiona. Final Marilyn in the Southern Uplands. | agentmancuso | 11/08/2018 |
4 tump round, big fell, kilmaroy, beneraird, revisit smyrton hill, from parking on verge at kilwhannel. | robertphillips | 09/08/2018 |
From Kilwhannel, as others. | Chris Peart | 24/03/2018 |
Despite the OS map lying about he public road extending to Lagafater lodge, there's been a road grab by the landowner, and there's a private no sign just south of Barnvannoch. Never mind, it's a nice walk all the same, and the track up the hill is dead easy. Nice hill, with wonderful views. | Gill | 23/03/2018 |
From Kilwhannel, then returned over Smyrton Hill, on way to weekend at Minnigaff. | NormanW | 23/03/2018 |
2/4 Marilyn. Parked where the road turns to Kilwhannel followed track through several fields, onto grassy track and a bizzare parked going nowhere Hitachi truck near the top fence. Then short pull to summit trig. Fine views to Knockdolian the next target and Ailsa Craig and Arran | N.Morters | 08/07/2017 |
Third visit, long round from Lagafater | Colin Crawford | 17/06/2017 |
4th hill of 6 today on a tough traverse with 70 litre rucksack from Barrhill station to Ballantrae climbing High Murdonochee, Cairn Hill of the Moil and Kilmoray, down to Nick of the Liberty and up along fenceline and then over to Trig and summit. Descent Sw to Leana Hill then Millcroon en-route to Milljoan hill. | Dazingdale | 17/05/2017 |
Parked at 112813 just before the track to the farm. Great views, good underfoot and took just over 2 hours return. 5.8 miles solo. | bolton | 07/07/2016 |
Bit of a hike from Kilwhannel but good track all the way to the top. | AndrewFinnimore | 03/06/2016 |
Weather fair. | MountainMac | 15/02/2016 |
Parked south of Barnvannoch then walked up the road to Lagafater Lodge, lodge big house more like. Hit the snow on track to Lodge then good track and path to summit. A very featureless moor, would not want to get lost on it in thick mist. Cloud was low so no views. Good little walk around 6.4 miles in total from where parked. 3 hour stroll. Company: Jake the Black Lab. | iandesbottes | 18/01/2016 |
parked at road end at kilwannel, good track all the way to near the top,no views. | robertphillips | 09/02/2015 |
W Jenx day after Ailsa Craig. Parked at lay by on A77 and took track past country house to its upper end. Spur down the hill across burn and back towards hill. Rough ground for a while up small burn - break out at 350 m onto hill and gain old coach road to near top. Lovely viewpoint. | nordicstar | 27/04/2014 |
From road to Lagafater lodge - southern approach over many miles of remote moorland. As the map shows a public road to near Lagavater Lodge we parked at NX 13882 75905, ignoring 'private road' sign close to NX 13109 73147. As we were about to start the walk the factor drove by in landrover, stopped and accosted us and firmly, but politely, told us to leave. We drove back to beginning of private road sign, walking from there. This added over 3km of road walking each way to the walk. Passed the Lodge without incident, taking good track to col, then ATV track to summit. Returned the same way. Signs and friendly waive from shepherd implies walkers are tolerated - but not cars! | Man of Kernow1 | 27/04/2014 |
With Mark Trengove and Steve Gillions after aborted Ailsa Craig landing. Previously passed within a few hundred metres of this top on 13/03/09. | Alex C | 27/04/2014 |
