8/8. Impressive churchyard! | Mark Jackson | 19/03/2024 |
Old graveyards are always a fascinating step back in time with their sturdy weathered gravestones and inscriptions, encroached on by nature. This hill top church overlooks the once opencast coal mine - now Saltwells National Nature Reserve, one of the UK's largest urban nature reserves and at the heart of the Global Black Country GeoPark. Dragonflies and Geology. There is a very important rock face called the Brewins
Canal Section where you can see the contact between the old landscape of
Silurian shale rocks (tropical sea) and the base of the Black Country coalfield (river deposits). There is a time gap of 100 million years between the two;
extremely rare in geology. Clay & ironstone were also mined here -hence the once industrial might of the Black Country, and the creation of marvels such as the Netherton canal tunnel- 2.76Km long,2 boats wide to speed movement, each with its own horse tow path. Still in use today for boats, & adventurous walkers & cyclists with a good torch. | Chris Pearson | 26/02/2024 |

Walked from Turners Hill (qv for route), finally up SE slope from Dudley Canal (Cattle Bridge). Pleasant route on a nice, sunny afternoon. Buses back to start of my day out at Vine, Delph Rd where I started by catching bus 8 to do Wren's Nest- they all go into Merry Hill Bus stn. | pwheeler | 28/04/2023 |
The graveyard is a classic of the genre and the atmosphere was enhanced by the bare trees and grey sky. | Wycombe Wanderer | 06/01/2023 |

Parked in churchyard for the short walk to the summit. Wished I'd paid more attention when I came previously to ring the bells! | PGCE | 09/08/2021 |
Nipped here on the way back from the Clent Hills. Parking on the road just outside the church. Difficulty locating the summit due to unkempt state of the graveyard, grass was 3/4 feet high. Wandered around the likely places based on the summit picture. With Carla and Evie. | RoguePulsar | 12/06/2021 |
I was pretty sure I had been up here before when I was younger. Ran 11km here and back from home today as the roads were piled high with snow and going to the countryside wasn't gonna happen. | sturuss | 24/01/2021 |
Merry Hill to Old Hill. | Smudge | 01/03/2020 |
Drove into church yard, parked up at rear (W end) of the church... almost on top of the HP. Cut benchmark at other end of the church, and flagstaff is a trig intersected stn. | jonglew | 18/12/2019 |
Parked to the WSW in Church Road SO939880. | David Evans | 01/08/2019 |
Spent far to long looking at the old grave stones before heading to The Old Swan for a pint and a roll. | heavyhorses | 05/06/2019 |
4 of 10 on epic 49.3 mile bike ride including church hill, wrens nest, Dudley castle, netherton hill, ridgehill, blackhill, wrottesley hill, tettenhall woods, bushbury hill and essington hill. Mound round back of church the hp | The-Z-Man | 15/09/2018 |
From Cradley Heath railway station along footpaths following the Mousesweet Brook and Black Brook, through Saltwells NR, then west along the south side of Lodge Farm reservoir, and north up Highbridge Hill to the churchyard. High point looks to be either the ridge of ground between the grave of 4 year-old Selena Fletcher and that of Solomon Garrett & family, or a mound by George Hawker Bissell’s grave. | Mariana Trench | 27/08/2018 |
1st of 7 logs today. Train to BNS then train to Coseley and then the 81 bus, stops close to the Church. Peaceful walk up to explore the raised Grave land being careful not to fall in any. 7 minute walk down the road to take bus to Dudley bus station then the 126 bus for Warley Park.. | Dazingdale | 30/06/2018 |
Parked in Church Rd. opposite front gates. Mound round back of church. | Aye Jimmy | 17/02/2018 |
Parked at end of Crescent Road from which it was a short walk through the cemetery to the top. | Herbert Anchovy | 09/02/2018 |
Parked opposite the church although I could have driven up the driveway and round the back as no doubt they do for funerals. Fascinating graveyard with many unnamed brick graves. | Campbell Singer | 29/08/2017 |
Fascinating old graveyard. Not spooky until after dark! | Barbara Singer | 29/08/2017 |
Enjoyable walk up from Lodge farm estate, taking in views of the reservoir. Take the path behind the bus stop and kept going up hill. Various paths with horses, real country feel. Good views to the south and west. Enter the spooky overgrown graveyard. Not sure which grave is highest. | Viroco | 12/08/2017 |

In graveyard behind church.Sad to see so many graves and stones in such poor condition | Bramley | 30/07/2016 |
In unkempt area of graveyard on NW side of St Andrew church. A respite from the surrounding houses, shops and industry, peaceful amongst the leaning grave stones, collapsing sarcophaguses and carpet of Buttercups and Daisies in shade of leafy Sycamore. As expected the ground all disturbed. | RichardM | 07/06/2016 |
Mound in rear of St Andrews grave yard | Ramblingpaul | 23/05/2016 |

Behind church in graveyard. Good views to west. 13.00. | arranc | 20/01/2015 |
Down-at-heel graveyard. | RHW | 31/08/2014 |
Unrestricted parking on Hill Street at entrance to church. Highest point is far end of cemetery behind church. Small mound between gravestones of James Bird & James Mason is top I reckon - assuming that is natural land and not the final resting place of a poor soul whose family couldn't afford a gravestone. | Hillsidenick | 12/06/2014 |
old cemetery, HP just near the edge. | Adrian | 31/03/2013 |
