From Blackberry La to HP, memorial bench and down a different path back to car. Pete drove us there but was happy to have a map reader to get round the well-heeled estate, which he found confusing when he went Tump bagging there on his own. Seemed a pleasant little green space but not much good for views. | pwheeler | 03/01/2022 |
From the nature reserve CP. Visited obvious high points and SK 05965 03616 which I can verify is the location of the summit picture bench. (Flowers still there, but cross has gone) No views in this maze of paths in the woods. Solo. | RoguePulsar | 05/06/2021 |
Parked at end of Blackberry Lane. 1st part of path has been surfaced. Visited SK 05899 03607 and alternative with bench and cross. | PGCE | 26/12/2020 |
Went to all grid references submitted. Spoke to a local dog walker who had been going there 40 years who took me to another spot which gave me the highest GPS reading. Wooden bench with memorial cross. Grid reference SK 05965 03616. | andrew brown | 03/08/2020 |
Slippery muddy path from the end of Blackberry Lane | johnkenyon | 23/02/2020 |
Parked at end of Blackberry Lane. Very muddy path leading up from end of road to ridge. Highest point probably near bench. Followed track either way till it started going downhill! | CreakingHiker | 18/12/2019 |
937 bus stop circular. Fading light in freezing fog atmosphere & vicious brambles did not endear this hilltop to me. | Smudge | 30/11/2019 |
along path from SW. Muddy trails lead through dense vegetation. think I found suitable high spot. | cjo | 27/10/2019 |
Parked to the NW in car park off Andrews Road at SK056039. | David Evans | 12/08/2019 |
Cut through overgrown cutting off Chester road to and up to summit bench.by bike | The-Z-Man | 08/08/2019 |
Late night ascent by headtorch. Read previous logs then memorised a series of left, right, right, left, right instructions to navigate the network of many paths to a steep climb up to summit knoll with a bench and cross on top, and as importantly back again. Also visited other suggested high point by fence just off main ridge path. The Shire oak name refers to an old English custom of each shire having a prominent oak tree as a significant meeting point. This one which marked the boundary between Walsall and Shenstone has sadly gone, but the name lives on as the Shire Oak pub -also a meeting place. | Chris Pearson | 28/03/2019 |

Some fancy homes around here. Felt a bit if I was bringing the neighborhood down by parking in Fox Walk on a grass verge! Really quiet lovely up in the woods on the top. | Play2End | 12/08/2018 |
Another easy stroll | climbingkershaw | 05/07/2018 |
5th and final tump of the day, having climbed Wrottesley Hill (Staffs) and Tettenhall Wood (Wolverhampton completion) from Albrighton Station, Church Hill (Sandwell) from Great Western station and Barr Beacon (Walsall) from bus stop near the Cat& Fiddle pub, I took the 997 bus to alight at Salters road/Castle road junction then walked up taking Bluebell road and then Fox walk then onto a good path in the country park and woodland before ducking under an immature oak to find the knoll next to the steep drop. I took paths to emerge onto Chester road then walked up to the bus stop at the Lichfield road/Chester road stop to take the bus to Birmingham for New Street station back to Nottingham. This hill completes Walsall U/A. | Dazingdale | 23/06/2018 |
No parking available on roads to NE and S so parked on Fox Walk from where a footpath leads into the woods. Felt the highest point was to the E of deep pit where a bench and cross could be found. | Wheelsy | 17/03/2018 |
Parked on Shire Ridge, walked to end of Blackberry Lane and onto a very muddy track leading up into woodland. HP 10m or so E side of track, on E side of easy wooden fencing (SK 05899 03607). | jonglew | 29/12/2017 |
Parked to NE on A452 at entrance to JPE Aggregates (it was Sunday). Across road into Shire Oak Park Local Nature Reserve at the info board. Up through wood with many paths to summit given. Two metres back from track behind bushes is wooden fence, a HP was found on other side of that above steep slope. An area to the NW of here looked higher - or maybe it's just the trees/bushes that were taller! | Aye Jimmy | 20/08/2017 |
Parked at end of Fox Walk, a cul-de-sac to the south. From there a path led into the woods and scrub. Pleasant enough walk but wouldn't have known I was on a hill summit. | Herbert Anchovy | 06/04/2017 |
Stroll along ridge from car park. | rhalstead | 12/03/2017 |
From the car park to the NW. Wandered into the six got high dead rose bay willowherb and thisle and bramble till I was satisfied the most ground underfoot was probably the biggest. | vegibagger | 27/12/2016 |
As per Richard M, the high point appears to be adjacent to path (behind wooden fence)around SK05884 03607. | Ramblingpaul | 26/09/2016 |
From Shire Ridge Car Park. Along path to indeterminate high point just off path | Bramley | 16/09/2016 |
Dog minding for the week so what better than explore a few local Tumps with her. Woodland nature reserve with a few areas of meadow. Essentially a level hill top of sand and pebble beds. A number of low mounds and ridges suggests once fortified or quarried. Not easy to identify a high point but a good contender is the edge of the track at SK 05886,03556. No views. | RichardM | 10/08/2016 |
Looking after Meg, ( dog) was a good excuse to visit this urban nature reserve and we had a pleasant walk around its wooded slopes. The top is a long flat ridge and the high point is difficult to discern. | Denise | 10/08/2016 |
From Andrews c.p.
A wander about amonst brambles, nettles and undergrowth with the constant hum of traffic.
Had a look at getting up the castle at far South end but seems to be private grounds.
Whilst its a nice spot to be able to walk your dog or just get out of the house but the views are not what they could be. | stig_nest | 22/04/2016 |
From Car Park along path. HP just off path to east. | PeterD | 22/03/2016 |
Walked from Andrews Rd car park. Practically level. | Barbara Singer | 23/02/2016 |
From Andrews Rd car park. Level walk . HP seemed indeterminate. Large area of summit covered in brambles. Surely impenetrable in the summer. Other high points more accessible. | Campbell Singer | 23/02/2016 |
Ended up doing by phone torchlight after traffic delays following meeting in Birmingham - fairly pleasant heathland from what I could sort of see. | Mark Sims | 07/12/2015 |
From Andrew's Road cp. Last of 14 Birmingham area hills today. | ngthack | 29/11/2015 |
There is a car park at SK 05629 03930 which is off shire ridge. Highest point just off path. | DARRENG | 09/08/2015 |
Woodland park. | Adrian | 04/07/2015 |
Parked in Andrews Road. High point is just over the fence from the path and looks pretty obvious once you're there. | clivevilla | 04/05/2015 |
Bagged from car park off Andrews Road. | Dugswell2 | 25/03/2015 |
Parked in the car park in Andrews Road and enjoyed the short walk to the summit. | Alancache | 26/02/2015 |
In park. | arranc | 25/01/2015 |
Short walk from Blackberry Lane, hard to tell high point with vegetation covering much of the area. | muzza2 | 31/05/2014 |
Fence straining post N side of road. Used to be a trig pillar a little way to the SE, in the pre housing days. | RHW | 21/03/2014 |
Uninteresting TuMP will poor views. A flat top, difficult to tell where highest point is. Maybe at junction of Greenwood Road and Branchal Road, but possibly in adjoining field?
