An odd hill name but good advice to not stray west of the summit marker poles on firing days into the overshoot zone for the MOD Meripool range. Today 24 young soldiers were being taught field skills. One of the staff was hiding from them all camouflaged up but stood out like a sore thumb from the way I approached having climbed the highest disintegrating china clay tip (P23). He was happy to have a long chat - loving his 2 years at RAF St Mawgan teaching Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract. Today it was basic survival - easy so far as they had just arrived by minibuses and the sun was shining as they lined up for their lesson. The staff had their HQ in the MOD owned old mine mangers house. This is all Access Land hence my accepted presence -despite the naughty sign on the track out saying Warning military exercise, which must deter some. Wild swimming in the quarry pool is banned as an exception to the CROW Act so a sign declared. 10 km 2.5hrs from L's recorder meet at Barleysplat.Chris Pearson04/04/2023
Walked from moor access point just past Maidenwell. Note, MOD signs indicating limited access. Summit just on edge of firing range. Sunny clear weather.Argentum6618/04/2019
