Repeat of our 4 r walk of a month ago - this time with John & Becks -down for 5 days in their new campervan. Lucky with the day being drier than forecast although a heavy shower had us temporarily huddling in the the cafe open shelter at Chapel Porth with the other hapless holiday makers. 3rd ascent. | Chris Pearson | 27/08/2023 |
4 hr coastal circuit with L from St Agnes via the Stippy Stappy miners cottages down to surfer busy Trevaunance Cove in brief hot sunshine. Along windy bracing cliff top coastal path and a sudden rain squall that had those few of us prepared tourists struggling into flapping waterproof jackets, and the rest to get cold and wet. Passed the iconic Wheal Coates mine to tiny Chapelporth Cove -red flags flying as strong wind producing challenging surf. Back over the summit (climbed from sea level!) then to St Agnes museum for our first experience at wearing a Virtual Reality headset looking at the old harbour. Nice little hill. Bagged as part of a coast walk from Porthtowan. Easy paths up to summit with nice viewpoint and trigoscope. Plenty of people about as it was a sunny Sunday afternoon. Last hill of the day. Earlier we bagged Carnmenellis and Carn Brea. | DanTrig | 17/10/2021 |
From St Agnes Head carpark, along the cliffs to the mine, where there was a peregrine hovering over us. Up past caravan site, where there is a field with cows which you can bypass on a permissive track. Then up the hill, with good views across Cornwall, and back to the car park. Very windy day, got wet with sea spray on the coast path. With AP&J. 5.3km. | PiranhaFish | 06/08/2021 |
Parked in the Wheal Coates NT car park, walked through the camp site onto the open hill. Just to make it interesting a bit of the history of the hill and Trig. This hill was a historic beacon site where signal fires were lit to warn the country of imminent sea-borne invasion. Beacon fires are still lit here when the local community celebrates important events. In prehistoric times the hill was a burial and ceremonial site, and there are four Bronze Age barrows dating from 2000 to 1500BC, one directly beneath the trig point. The Beacon was a coastguard lookout from 1914 to 1926, when it was replaced by the lookout at St Agnes Head. In the Second World War it again acted as an early warning system, when a Type 57 mobile radar station operated here, its hand-turned aerial scanning the sea for enemy ships. A coin from the reign of Julian (AD 360) was dug up near the summit in 1910. You can see a replica at St Agnes Museum. | Tony Hartry | 30/04/2021 |
Two things about hills with 'Beacon' in the name...
Easy access (someone has to get the firewood up there) and Good Views. Two ticks for this one. | M3WDD | 26/09/2020 |

Parked in the pay & display car park above Trevaunce Cove (SW 72080 51310) and took SW Coast Path west and south around Newdowns Head and St Agnes Head as far as tin mine buildings. Then track inland to Beacon Drive. Followed this north to its highest point. Then good path south to the summit. To descend, took RoW east to lane, then tracks north to re-join SW Coast Path again east of Newdowns Head. Then followed trail back to Trevaunce Cove. A grey and drizzly visit to the cairns at the start of a coast walk to Portreath. Fine monuments on the ridge, but a bit of a scruffy feel to the top as a whole. Despite the cloud, the views were excellent along the coast and inland towards Carn Brea. | thesweetcheat | 25/06/2012 |

28-07-1991 to watch the chain of beacons lit - something to do with Charles and Diana's wedding. The beacons although fun were not that much of a success as the sea mists rolled in and ours was hard to see at 50m. May not have got to the true high point on that occasion as I think it was probably cordoned off. | RichardM | 12/10/2003 |
