Layby at 345444. Through the gate and then good burn crossing and a direct, steep, climb to the summit. Solo. Cold and clear. 1 hour 50 minutes on a slow walk.bolton09/01/2024

From ENE, due west up smooth grass field to 400m, then NW up a faint 4WD track to 500m, which continued SW for most of the remaining way to summit.Topographer5705/09/2023
Parked in small layby just south of Blackhopebyre. Crossed river just above pole bridge and up embankment onto hillside. Dead vegetation on lower slopes (soon to be this years fern bushes!!) Tussocky grass further up and then heather which can be avoided by following one of many grassy channels that run between the heather all the way to the top.Jossker26/05/2023

Roadside verge parking between Glentress and Blackhopebyre (NT 3420 4364). Declined the rotting poles that pass for a bridge over the Glentress Water, but found an easy fording point due E of the parking spot. Direct line up the fellside to here. On to Middle Hill, Eastside Heights, Windlestraw Law, Bareback Knowes, Dod Hill and return for a 16.3km round which completed the Donalds and Donald Tops.jonglew25/02/2023

From the B709 – grim – energy sapping soft veg, then hags. I could not see any signs of ATV tracks ascending the hill, but several short ATV tracks from the B709 down to Glentress Water so I parked just below a small plantation almost completely windblown, at NT346445, to get a higher starting point. Easy across the burn but then relentless irksome veg with occasional bits of ATV track, leading into bad hags near the ridge fence line. Returning from the summit I found a faint ATV track in coarse veg down to a wire bird trap – if you find this on the way up, take the barely discernible L fork, as the prominent R fork ends up in the hags. As the ATV track cannot be seen from below do yourself a favour – it may be easier, but longer, to gain most of the height via the forest tracks on the W flankIsbjorn09/05/2022

Whitehope Law, Dod Hill, Bareback Knowe and Windlestraw Law. On the way down from Whitehope I baulked a bit at the “bridge” which was just 2 telegraph poles at GR 342437 so walked downstream and crossed over at the bridge at Glentress.tsharp22/12/2021
Parked north of Blackhope Byre then up by a few zigs and zags to the top. Mist down over the top. Returned by approximately the same route. With NP and JK.kenmorti14/11/2021
With K and J, from the road up slope directly E of summit although our traverse was somewhat less direct. Adequate roadside parking and a rough track to start us up the hill. Misty up top though a dry cool wind. Maybe 3 hrs tops.niallp14/11/2021

Had planned to do the Moorfoot Hills, but the estate had blocked off the informal parking area, so went over to get Whitehope Law. Parked in an informal layby north of the Old Road north of Blackhopebyre on the B709, at approx the 300m contour. It took an hour to get to the summit, only a tiny cairn. no real path up just a few sheep trails that peter out. Dry throughout with a light breeze.chillyman802/07/2020

Parked in the B709 layby 200 yards N of Blackhopebyre. A fairly direct line across the burn and up steep, grassy slopes to the summit of Whitehope Law, following grassy inlets through the heather. Along the fence N to Roughside Hill, descending by Mid Hill and the saddle on Burnt Shell Rig, across the road near the Piper's Grave, steeply up to Eastside Heights, then a pleasant descent along Blackhopebyre Rig.Nick Down111/01/2019

Noted nicolajane's comments & parked on hardstanding N. of sheep pens at NT34507 44755 - Down road to pens, through gates, over burn & alongside wall to gate in corner - Up alongside burn for about 200m & then right up onto ridge - Picked up ATV track which follows the ridge round to the fence junction & then faint path alongside fence to summit stones. Easy bag from the east. After crossing the burn, short grass then various tracks through the heather and tussocks up to the summit.AndrewFinnimore14/07/2018
There is quite a reasonable atv track that starts as a farm track at NT344444 and works its way round to the north shoulder of Whitehope Law. Much easier than thrashing up through the heather. I of course only found it on the way down.nicolajane27/06/2018

We parked high on the B709, and began with the 489m spot height. A bit rough; the way down to NT344447 was grassier and had a bit of a path.Pete R13/01/2018

Done as an out & back after Blackhope Scar which we had done from the summit of the B709 at 347464 underneath Burntshell Rig. Followed the fenceline generally S from the 3 way fence junction at 336469 & returned the same way. A bit rough in places but wide open views & therefore better in my book than the interminably steep slopes from Glentress further down the glen, even if it is longer.NotReallyABagger26/05/2017

Repeat, almost, of walk on 25/02/2015, this time with Jackie. Parked on B709, walked back to bridge over Glentress Water and through farm, across small bridge and up to gates, this time taking Left gate and steeply up field and over fence (this route was used in descent on first vist - it avoids clambering over tall stone dyke); continued on traces of paths directly up to summit, did not linger as cold wind and no shelter. Descent on reverse of ascent route. Lunch taken in car. Weather was some sun, a threat of rain/sleet but with a strong W wind.jacobus19/03/2017

With Simon followed by ascent of Windlestraw Law and ita SW top. Parked in layby on B709 south of Blackhopebyre. Mildly exciting vault across Glentress Water followed by steep ascent up SE slope followed by long trudge across heather to summit marked by small cairn near bend in fence. Descended by following fence NE and turning right at first fence junction down Kitty's Clench Burn.mntainman20/02/2017

Solo, parking 250 metres east of drive/bridge to Whitehope Farm which was walked through and right over small bridge. Dry stane dyke was kept on LHS but problems higher as no gate through upper wall; precarious clambering over. Onward over Windside Hill to summit - a couple of small stones next to fence. Returned on other side (W)of dry stane dyke without problem. Weather surprisingly warm when sun shone; wind got up on top.trienbrae25/02/2015

I was going to incorporate Windlestraw into the walk but they were shooting so i avoided the conflict of interest. As i was half way up the interminable slope there was the sound of much gunfire coming from the other side of the valley. A pregnant pause...then loud cheering and hooting of horns it seems that not only are they happy to massacre innocent creatures in the name of 'sport' but like to raise a hullabaloo about it. Its a shame the birds can't shoot back!thenomad04/09/2014

Solo. I parked at a layby a little north of Blackhopebyre. I went north for a little way on a track to some sheep folds and then on a barely discernible path passing near a bothy before going SW up the hillside obliquely. There was a watercourse besides a somewhat more obvious path. I ascended more directly up the hillside passing and/or using other bits of paths looking rather more than just animal tracks to reach the summit of Whitehope Law. I returned more or less the same way and continued to Windlestraw Law. Warm and sunny.pwbellarby30/05/2009
Parked at Whitehope on a grass verge. Up the road through 2 gates passing geese, Belted Galloways and an Alsatian onto a 400' very steep grass slope to top corner and stile. Followed sheep and cattle trods through heather to cross a fence and a slight bend marking the top. 13.10. 10 stones 10m away and 2 larger ones near a fence post.arranc08/04/2009
