A dramatic peak when viewed from the west, perched high above the sea. With Lesley, a steep climb out of Coombe Martin after a sandwich on the beach and a chat to RSPCA shop lady who had just adopted a stray dog from Cyprus and paid its air fare. Below the peak lies the incredible adventure of the Exmoor Coast traverse -a very committing traverse /climb at sea level between Coombe Martin & Lynton. A huge tidal range (2nd largest in world) and very few escape routes up steep rock and grass make for a very serious outing. The 1st continuous crossing after many reconnaissance trips in 1978 took 4 and half days! http://members.madasafish.com/~exmoorwalker/page100.html. One of the early explorers of the traverse in the 1950s, Clement Archer, broke his leg in a fall at sea level and was rescued form high above by the fire brigade tying 1000 feet of ropes and fire hoses together to pull him up! Sea kyackers now do the traverse more leisurely in about 3 days camping at wild coves. | Chris Pearson | 06/04/2016 |
