White Sheet Hill, Castle Hill and Long Hill from Stourhead. The goats were friendly today! | Chris Peart | 24/10/2023 |
Butted several times by one of the goats, however I think really it was hoping for a tidbit. | Martin R | 20/10/2023 |
From Castle St Car Park in Mere. Up between Castle Hill and Long Hill and along the ridge to summit. | clivevilla | 30/07/2023 |

Parked on housing estate ST 809 324 | DC11main | 03/04/2022 |
Lovely circuit from Mere, over Long Hill, Zeal's Knoll and White Sheet Hill. My altimeter couldn't separate the two Long Hill tops but I'll accept that the western one is the higher | Colin Crawford | 16/10/2021 |
Parked in Castle St cp. Took the eastern approach up the hill. Easy walking up grassy paths. No goats but we were told they are still there. Back via Castle Hill and straight down into village opposite the cp. | Campbell Singer | 13/10/2021 |
Great viewpoint but a bit noisy. | Barbara Singer | 13/10/2021 |
From Mere, up to monument/ Csstle Hill then over Long Hill, past goats. A nice walk to be able to do from the town. Then onto Zeals Knoll (qv for log) | pwheeler | 22/09/2021 |
Highlight of the day were the 20 or so goats and kids grazing on the summit ridge, very friendly. | cjo | 30/12/2020 |
Free parking in Mere. Castle Street car park: path opposite to Castle Hill. Then Long Hill and Zeals Knoll. | PGCE | 22/09/2020 |
Grassy ridge with hawthorne and wildflowers, populated by an engaging herd of goats. HP on ridge path. Great views. Castle Hill (presumably unnatural?) to east apparently higher and also worth visiting, with war memorial, topograph and Union Jack | Denise | 22/06/2020 |
From the W along the ridge crossing the high point then past group of goats fighting for a place on the seat and onto the excellent Castle Hill with its topograph, fine views and Union Jack streaming from flag pole. | RichardM | 22/06/2020 |
From White Sheet Hill car park. 9km circuit, White Sheet Hill, Long Hill & Zeals Knoll. ROW from White Sheet Hill. Steeply up then ROW west to HP then on to Zeals Knoll. | fosal29 | 14/02/2020 |
12 mile circular from Mere taking in Long Hill, Zeals Knoll, Long Knoll, Little Knoll and White Sheet Hill. A quick ascent up onto Long Hill, bagged both summits a nice view from this little hill, then followed path north, under the A303 and onto Zeals Knoll. | DanTrig | 08/10/2019 |
Short walk from car park to South. | rhalstead | 24/08/2019 |
Started at the White Sheet Hill car park and headed SW initially. At ST 791 347 there's another hill top memorial to about 20 RAF men who crashed into the hill during WWII. Simple walk from there to Zeals Knoll, avoiding a mature bean crop by following wide grass margins. Then both summits of Long Hill and back up to the top of White Sheet Hill. Lots of corn buntings. About 5.5 miles. | Herbert Anchovy | 28/06/2019 |
From Mere steeply up to old top - good views, then on to HP.Continued to Zeals Knoll. | PeterD | 24/09/2017 |
After White Sheet Hill, good climb up from the town, views curtailed by mist & fog. Took pictures on the old summit, but did both. | DanMaisieBex | 07/01/2017 |
Walked from Mere along the ridge from the site of the castle. | Swindon Bagger | 30/09/2016 |
A lovely little steep sided chalk ridge - very much part of the small town of Mere with paths and seats wandering up it to the memorial to the 43 Wessex regiment whose 'Tommys' suffered 3000 killed during the campaign in NW Europe in WWII. A crisp St George's flag was flying from the summit flagpole on this Armed Forces Day, and had been taken down when I passed back after visiting Zeals Knoll. A local out dog walking agreed that it was a lovely hill and that anecdotedly half the population of Mere had had their ashes scattered either on Long Hill or White Sheet Hill. Very unbothered herd of a dozen goats flaked out in the heat across the summit path -one comfy on one of the seats. | Chris Pearson | 30/07/2016 |
east summit (tandem trip) | TeasyChris | 10/05/2016 |
On way back from Zeals Knoll on a wild Xmas pm. West summit has two contour rings but only one summit discernable. East summit about p15m by gps, viewfinder a nice retrospective on last few hills of the afternoon. Down in the dusk | RHW | 25/12/2015 |
Parked in Castle Street car park (free). An alley opposite gives direct access to the hill. Visited the old and new summits but as there's no line of sight between them I won't venture an opinion. | Chris Peart | 04/02/2015 |
Mere to Warminster. Herd of tame goats roaming the slopes of Castle Hill. A query has led to revision of summit location westwards. | Smudge | 27/12/2014 |
Circular walk from White Sheet Hill car park, S through Mere, then W. Steep little hill, but not much to it. Flat plateau for a summit with war memorial, bench seats, flagpole and a toposcope (marking the summit point). | jonglew | 24/09/2014 |
Walked up from Mere | ekm | 01/04/2014 |
