Parked E of Kettelshiel. Followed track up most of way. | colazione | 19/01/2024 |
Parked in a solid laybe as per others. Old hill track which turns into red clay ( wet and muddy ), then heathery ruts. Over dronshiel and onto D Great Law. A dry sunny day. Return same route. | VerySlowPlodder | 22/10/2023 |
Not entirely clear where to park but managed to get on the verge. Easy enough hill. Trigpoint on its side | tallblond | 13/10/2023 |
follow the red clay road | BLACKHILL | 07/09/2023 |
Parked as others on layby on B6496 - 687517. Great grassy track to summit of Dirrington Little Law. Some heather, but mainly Grouse butt paths and good tracks down to Kippet Law Cottage. Good track most of way up Dirrington Great Law, but some deep heather mid way. Shorter higher. Recumbent trig found. Down SE then SW on mainly good tracks. Left track to cut across fieldvto Kettelshiel Bridge, then 1.5km back along quiet road to car. 9.6km, sunny & dry. Lovely views throughout. | Lynnebe | 02/09/2023 |
From the gate at NT712552. A gentle ascent along the red clay track and up the ridge from Dronshiel Hill to the three cairn-mounds on the summit. | Nick Down1 | 01/07/2023 |
From the gate on the road to the NE of the hill about 708554 we followed the red clay track up to the dyke which we followed uphill to the trig. | DavieRuts | 27/06/2023 |
Last of 3 Marilyns today. Parked at gate NT71155 55210. It had been raining lots during the previous days and the track from the gate immediately showed this. It was a horrible red clay. There is no escaping the track as it was dug out and the spoils tipped over the side making walking next to the track impossible. Track leads to the top. My boots have almost been stained red. | Jhimmy | 25/03/2023 |
Third of 3 Ma btw N Berwick and Duns. Route as gerrybowes except on the way up I used the path on the E side of the wall, entering Henlaw Wood at a gate where the red track turns W. It's definitely better to follow the red track all the way, as I did on descent. Huge mown strips in the heather to the summit area made the ascent easy to the most distinctive summit of the day- back to car just before the showers caught up with me. My 3 walks totalled 20 km | pwheeler | 18/09/2022 |
tim747 route. 45 minutes up and down. | Wycombe Wanderer | 31/08/2022 |
Parked in an old quarry along the SUW/minor road that runs parallel to Dye Water, SW of Longformacus. Followed a track through the woods and out onto the rather disfigured moor to Dimples Lees. Cut heather made the ascent of Dirrington Great Law to its toppled trig straightforward enough, then down to Kippetlaw cottage and up besides a row of shooting butts to Little Law and its unnecessarily large crucifix. Returned via tracks, trying to avoid trampling rampant amphibians along the wetter sections. | summitter | 27/03/2022 |
After Spartleton. Parked at the gate and walked up track through plantation, then across managed heather to the summit and the nearby toppled trig point. | the pigguy | 21/03/2022 |
Route as described by bolton and by gerrybowes. Solo. | Dangerous Dave | 03/11/2021 |
As logged by gerrybowes. Got a bit wet - so went to St Abbs Head and got very wet indeed. | m0jla | 09/09/2021 |
Easy parking to side of gate at NT 7115 5520 - Up well-used vehicle track which heads across the flanks of Dronshiel Hill & meets the wall at 208543 - From there, up a wide track that had been cut through the heather & when this ends up wide strips of cleared heather to the summit cairn. (S) | gerrybowes | 29/06/2021 |
Followed the SE fence line. Windy and sunny. | Play2End | 12/06/2021 |
Parked next to gate at 711552. Followed reddish path which bears no resemblance to the one on the OS map. An easy return walk of 70 minutes in light drizzle. Solo. | bolton | 15/10/2020 |
3 of 3: After Meikle Says Law. Used Tim747's route. With Karen. | ChrisR | 07/09/2020 |
Ran up from Longformacus via deep heathery slog. With Dirrington Little Law | Iloveducks | 06/09/2020 |
With Iain. First hill of day in deep Border country. Took longer than expected but pleasant heathery summit. Parked by bridge. | iangpark | 06/07/2020 |
Alone. Ascent via ATV tracks from bridge to NE. | SpudGunn | 08/07/2019 |
A great walk on a sunny clear day - From old quarry just outside Longformarcus - followed Southern Upland Way (along lane) to Watch Water and onto Twin Law (summit and cairns) - returned to Twin Law Burn then followed fences (vehicle tracks) to Dirrington Little Law (summit and cross) - Feurarsmoor - Dirrington Great Law (summit ancient cairns and toppled trig) - Megs plantation then road back to Longformarcus. | briandavies | 10/10/2018 |
Walk not as steep as the contours seemed to indicate so a nice steady walk to the top. | Walker Dan | 22/09/2018 |
From road to east, with H waiting in van, just before dark. Misty on top, drizzle. | Rounsfell | 15/08/2018 |
Track to summit from Henlaw Wood. | Chris Peart | 20/06/2018 |
Via the track adjacent to what was Henlaw Wood, now clear felled. Combined with Meikle Says Law in the afternoon. | Roblex | 17/06/2018 |
Started at Kettelshiel taking land rover track out then up by quarry. Thereafter on heather and atv tracks (wall/fence to cross near summit). Returned by visiting Kippetlaw where my great grandfather was born in 1850 (now a plush shooting hut with nice large table outside for lunch). | SS | 12/06/2018 |
Parked wide verge opposite track nt711552 good in dry weather. Good paths all the way, trig was having a lie down when I arrived. | G0HIO | 17/05/2018 |
Standard route up the track (incredibly red soil and puddles) through the felled area. Three summits within 50 metres or so of each other at the top, did them all. Direct route back through quite easy short heather, not too bad at all. | Owen B | 30/03/2018 |
A nice hill. Parked by the gate and walked up the easy track all the way to the top. Fine views of the rain hammering the Cheviots and the other Borders hills. | Gill | 10/02/2018 |
With Steve Smith. Roadside verge parking; access track S through centre of felled woodland strip, then due E on boggy track to top. | jonglew | 16/10/2017 |
Via the track from NT711552. | summitsup | 03/10/2017 |

As Tim747. Good space at gate, woods on map now gone/replanted. Track goes up to the left towards the small wood, then curves below and right up onto ridge. It follows the wall and to summit. | N.Morters | 15/07/2017 |
Followed track through gate to the summit and operated ham radio for SOTA when I got there. | G4OBK (Phil) | 12/07/2017 |
Breezy day, but great views from the top! | Gebirgsjaeger | 24/06/2017 |
Weather fair with deep snow. | MountainMac | 16/01/2016 |
An unusual feature for a Marilyn: driving in (from Edinburgh), the highest point on the approach road (433m) was higher than this summit (398m). | Pete R | 24/12/2015 |
Parked at Dronshiel Bridge. Walked WSW then SSE around the enclosures. Finally set of WSW up the track bt the grouse butts to the top. Returned the same way. | aul-fogie | 30/06/2015 |
Exactly as Tim747 described - a track all the way to the summit. Route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/another-surprise-five.html | Gayle | 28/05/2015 |
8th and Last hill of the day on a long route from Melrose to Longformacus. Was pretty tired at this stage and light was decreasing but lovely hill. Visited Legerwood Hill, West Hill, Knock Hill, Fawside hill, Rumbleton Law, Halliburton Hill and Dirrington Great Law before descending to the track (which leads to Kippet Law)and then used the various patches of burnt heather to make walking easier. Visited both cairns inc.damaged trig. Descent was Nw on a bearing but going too tough so diverted to Drumshiel bridge and then walked along road to Longformacus where I was informed that the B&b had burnt my dinner as they expected me earlier! B&b also had no idea on Scottish Access rights! | Dazingdale | 17/05/2015 |
Up from dronshiel. | robertphillips | 02/05/2015 |
After Meikle Says Law and Spartleton. Parked by gate (71155 55213) the track leads all the way to the summit passing over Dronshiel Hill. No access issues. | tim747 | 19/03/2015 |

From the minor road to the east. Easy up and down. | AndrewFinnimore | 15/11/2014 |
Solo run. From just north of dronshiel. A couple of frisky bulls to contend with on the trott across the moorland. | amswanston | 15/06/2014 |
after Meikle Says Law. Parked at wood SE of Dronsheil, then trudge across bog until pleasant summit. | Thearlaichdubh | 26/12/2013 |
High cloudy, dry, strong wind, good views, + DLL. | iangalbraith | 16/11/2013 |
W Jenx, last of four Ms on a bright clear but cold day. Parking on verge just North of forbidden lane. Through gate and around house to reach good 4x4 track, leads most way up hill. Cut off this to steeps and summit. Sad toppled trig on top been dragged off by farmer. Good views to south and Cheviots in distance | nordicstar | 10/11/2013 |
It is better to respect the private no right of way signs and to climb the hill from further east starting at 712551. Gives a longer and nicer walk.We go to the hills to enjoy them after all | AlisonFox66 | 27/04/2013 |
Solo. Parked at start of track due north of the summit. Track goes WSW but my OS 1:50,000 map shows a path going in a straight line SSE. Attempted to follow path but it did not seem to exist on the ground. On summit area there are three ancient cairns and a trig point of concrete square section that had fallen over. | pwbellarby | 06/10/2012 |
On top before 8am. Ascent from layby just north of Dronshiel farm. No access hassles. | KevPalmer | 23/05/2012 |
Roadside parking at Dronshiel, passed house on the south. Rough vehicle tracks up hill, ground thankfully frozen and therefore dry. Sign claiming "private no right of way" has no legal force. | Topographer57 | 20/12/2011 |
KeithByTheC | 14/10/2011 | |
Followed track from Dronshiel entrance (12:00) round S of house and up very pleasant hill. Short heather on top. Good weather and views. Back by same route. Finish 13:00 | dbb | 15/09/2011 |
3rd Lammermuir top of the day from SE of Dronsheil...dry and clear. | Dugswell2 | 11/07/2009 |
From ESE at 724.543. Good track skirts S end of wood, then follow heathery tracks by wall all way to top. Trig leaning at 45 degrees and cairn about 25m away. Caught in thunderstorm on way back. | Aye Jimmy | 13/06/2009 |
with Jamie on way up to Strontian marhofn gathering | vegibagger | 05/06/2009 |
Revisit. Nice steep heathery hill, decent view. Straightforward ascent from ENE. | RHW | 22/11/2008 |
Excellent views across the Lammermuirs. Interested to note that OS have deleted this from the latest online mapping although its still on my 4 year old explorer. Spider gone but FB still there. I wonder what is OS Policy on how damaged a trig has to be to | andy | 06/05/2007 |
very batterred trig pillar and 2 ancient cairns.
fab views to cheviots and very deep and comfy heather to sit in.
climbed from North via atv tracks. | maknipe | 03/03/2007 |

My local hill. Easily reached from the main road. park nr dronshiel.....
Climbed 13/12/2007. Trig point on side. | SJ | 17/06/2005 |

From SE up the side of the wood to Blacksmith Hill. | Eddie | 20/06/2002 |
Immaculate grouse moor, heather patchwork, tracks between for beaters and shooters. 600' climb to top at 15.50. | arranc | 02/09/2000 |
