Wessex Ridgeway from Avebury to Devizes and back to car with hills attached | PhilipChaston | 19/02/2023 |
Visited summit then across to the monument which is still awaiting restoration. Cows grazing on summit area. Very misty, no views. | cjo | 19/12/2021 |
Parked on the A4. After approx 600m I took the left fork then quit the fp and followed a farmers track which delivers me virtually to the top. A family followed me thinking I knew where I was going. They were correct but hadn't factored in that I was probably the only person that day who did not have the monument as their primary target. | DC11main | 18/07/2021 |
Parked in layby on A4. Visited summit, ramparts, obelisk and white horse. A nice walk. | PGCE | 04/01/2021 |
Beckhampton to Avebury. | Smudge | 01/12/2019 |
Rough lane from N starting at SU 0557.7021. Track to crest of hill, a little further on is stile on L leading to summit. Then visited monument, still under scaffolding and cladding awaiting restoration by NT 'when funding available'. | Aye Jimmy | 14/07/2019 |
From Cherhill A4 via Cherhill Down tump on Calstone Down. Nice 6 mile walk featuring view of white horse, wander through Oldbury hill fort, a stretch of roman road to Morgans Hill tump. Uncertain if Furze Knoll or fallen trig higher. That bagged, followed Wansdyke, and back via charming old rectory at Calstone Wellington. | Pete West | 18/02/2019 |
Parked where post box is on A 4. Looks like a redundant bus stop as ther is no sign. Good path all the way. Bit muddy at the start. Huge hill fort. Great views. | Campbell Singer | 11/12/2018 |
From A4 lay-by to NW, past White horse, over HP on ramparts to spot height south of fence and also north of fence which may be as high. Back via Lansdowne monument. Good views. | PeterD | 07/05/2018 |
Hp is N of fence in cow pasture, but OS spot height is to south, nearby. Sunny windy day. Superb area with chalk downs, ancient roads and ditches, plus the 1845 Lansdowne Monument ( based shuttered due to risk of falling masonry) nearby. | Denise | 31/03/2017 |
On broad ridge SE of the hill fort. Cattle pasture with clumps of gorse, scattered hawthorn trees and a group of beech trees. Top of ring mound of hill fort is a similar height. A nice interesting hill with great if hazy views. | RichardM | 31/03/2017 |
Also went to the hill fort to bag the Dewey notable hill summit. Parked on A4 east of Cherhill. | clivevilla | 26/08/2016 |
From A4 layby on Wessex Ridgeway. | rhalstead | 18/08/2016 |
From the A4 in Cherhill to the highest point of the ramparts via the White Horse and the monument | Mariana Trench | 01/05/2016 |
Climbed up from the A4, picnic with the cows near the monuments & then over Oldbury to the summit | DanMaisieBex | 01/05/2016 |
Part of a 15 mile mountain bike circular ride from Devizes. | kingabunyip | 17/04/2016 |
With Morgan's Hill from SU028660 (parking) | jimbloomer | 11/10/2015 |
White horse and monument, good hill. Neither are on the summit though. | Adrian | 30/05/2015 |
1/3 Magnificent white horse on side of hill easy track to top | Fergalh | 27/05/2015 |
Parked at SU059675 on A361 (plenty of parking) and worked my way up the byways and bridleways to the summit. Smashing hill fort! | Chris Peart | 19/04/2015 |
Layby parking on A4, with plenty of good paths to the monument, Oldbury Castle and the White Horse. Reaching the highest point slightly more challenging with fences and cows. This is an excellent hill with great views, but the true top is unfortunately not the best place to appreciate them. | Hillsidenick | 30/07/2013 |
Been up here a few times including, I think, this date when I found a lesser butterfly orchid. | Herbert Anchovy | 14/06/2011 |
Climbed at dawn from Cherhill after Morgans Hill before breakfast & training day at Dauntsey's school. The London to Bath Roman Road crosses the S flank. The Lansdown monument is to William Petty 1623-87 -who charted Ireland for Cromwell's Model Army. Land was confiscated & given to those who had contributed to pay them off -incl. Petty who got a huge 120km2 of Kenmare. Petty is best known for his economic history and statistical analysis , before Adam Smith. He surveyed the population and livestock of his land to develop an understanding of the lands potential - the foundation for modern census techniques. | Chris Pearson | 14/04/2010 |
First visit here after we moved to Lyneham. Top is short distance from the monument. Since been up to monument 10-12 times as it's nearest hill to our house. Plenty of parking on A4 laybys and different tracks to monument, a bit rough from there to hill summit. ***Revisited today, 10 Feb 2014, to clock the GR. At best estimate found it to be a short distance NW of 262m spot height on 1:25k map. | jonglew | 12/11/2006 |
pleasant approach, fairly dull summit & view (in dark). tk from N then cross rough pasture from saddle to262, return via hill fort | RHW | 18/10/2002 |
