I wasn't expecting the most interesting of today's tumps to be the one in a village. A fascinating town on a very abrupt hill.Mark Jackson07/01/2023
Junction of roads. Cut mark on wall by verge. Near but not at trig. Winchelsea is a pretty and historic village. Hot walk from boat on mud at Rye.Denise 13/07/2022
Walked from Strand Quay, Rye. Lots to explore in the delightful Winchelsea. High point at High Street - Rectory Lane junction, choose your verge. I opted for the grass on W side of junction.RichardM13/07/2022
Parked just south of HP. Verge on west side of road seems to be highest, although it was dark at time of visit.PeterD28/11/2021

House at SW side of junction seemed slightly higher. Didn't invite myself in to check garden. Very little in it I expect.RHW27/06/2015
Summit lies on the picturesque main street next to a tree where a sign reads Wesley gave his last sermon (the chapel was too small for the large crowd). The town stands on the site of a medieval town, which was lost to the sea. The town had a tidal harbour on the River Brede and was greatly involved in the wine trade and the extensive wine cellars under the town may still be visited on open days. Its prosperity was gradually sapped by the silting of its harbour, shifts in the pattern of trade and disasters such as war and plague. By the middle of the 16th century, it had been left high and dry. In 2012 the village had the slowest broadband speed in the United Kingdom. Spike Milligan is buried here with the words 'I told you I was ill' on his headstone but the diocese refused to allow this epitaph.and so a compromise was reached with it written in Irish.Chris Pearson04/03/2015
