Parked at end of public road near Potburn
for the Ettrick Horseshoe. Counter clockwise taking in White Shank, Smidhope Hill and Capel Fell. I wasn't looking forward to the outlier of Croft Head, but the ascent up West Knowe, was worse, as there is decent zig zag path up Cat Shoulder. From it was easy over Loch Fell, Wind Fell then Hopetoun Craig and one final pull up Ettrick Pen. Which had the first proper summit feature of the whole day, a large cairn.
Dropped down to the NW to pick up the forestry track, then past Over Phawhope bothy and back to the car 8hrs after setting off. | chillyman8 | 31/07/2022 |
Started from the turning circle at the end of the minor road leading to the head of the Ettrick valley and followed the SMC route taking in the summits of Ettrick Pen, Hopetoun Craig, Wind fell, Loch fell, West Knowe, Croft head, Capel fell, Smidhope hill and White shank. A tough and long walk taking seven and half hours for the Twelve and half mile with 4000ft of ascent. Route finding was generally easy following fencing but a brutal descent of West Knowe is needed to reach the valley floor. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 01/05/2022 |
Ettrick Head Horseshoe is a great walk for wide open views in lots of directions across to hills by Grey Mares Tail, Cheviots, Pennines, Lake District, Criffle, Dumfries and Galloway and Lead Hills. 10 miles. Start at the end of the road past Ettrick. Up White Shank, Smidhope Hill, Capel Fell, Wind Fell, Hopetoun Crag, Ettrick Pen. Did not see anyone all day, with Sally. | Victor | 09/04/2022 |
Parked at Ettrick public road end at 1892 0926 (space for four cars). Along SUW to check out the bothy at Over Phawhope. Big sitting room with two comfy couches, stove, coal, kindling. Not too shabby. Then west along SUW to link up with our previously completed section at the bottom of Cat Shoulder. With that done we returned via the hills - up Wind Fell from Ettrick Head. Great views. Over Hopetoun Craig (impressive cairn) and up Ettrick Pen. Descended directly to bothy. Clear paths all the way. No bogs, fences, cows. Just 9 miles, 2100ft ascent. | Toby-and-Dion | 18/09/2021 |
Descent down near forestry plantation. | johninthehills | 04/09/2021 |
From roadhead parking 1k before Potburn. Up track past bothy on n side of Entertrona Burn, then up mostly grassy west ridge. | KeithByTheC | 01/08/2021 |
From turning circle at road before Potburn, walking on track past Potburn to Over Phawhope, then along tracks to E, becoming intermittent path, to summit of Ettrick Pen, continuing over summits Hopetoun Craig, Wind Fell, Loch Fell, West Knowe, then steep pathless descent to sheepfold on col to NW, climb up good zig-zag path to Croft Head, return to sheepfold, NE along Southern Upland Way to the col at Ettrick Head, then NW along fence line to Capel Fell, continuing by fence and wall to Smidhope Hill and White Shank, descending through rough grassland around edge of forestry to Potburn and back to turning circle | kdbennett | 15/07/2021 |
With David Alexander. From end of road (9:25) in patchy sunshine, walked past Over Phawhope bothy and up track to end. Path continued but very faint higher up. Continued from summit to head of valley over Hopetoun Crag and Wind Fell, then back down SUW to car (13:00) just as rain started. | dbb | 26/04/2021 |
From end of public road at Potburn, SUW to NT 1779 0668, then handy break up through well-spaced conifers for Wind Fell -> Hopetoun Craig then across to here. On to Dob's Craig -> Phawhope Kips for a 9 mile round. | jonglew | 05/04/2021 |
Parked at Ettrick road end for a mop-up circuit of Ewelairs Hill, Ruegill Head, Pot Hill, Jock's Shoulder, Lamblair Knowe, Dob's Craig, Ettrick Pen and Pot Law. | PGCE | 18/03/2021 |
From Potburn in Ettrick valley; afterwards via Wind Hill to Capel Fell. | IanHHill | 22/10/2020 |
yorkielad | 19/09/2020 | |
Parked at the end of the public road. Past Potburn and Over Phawhope bothy to end of track directly west of summit. Brief chat with 2 stalkers at the bothy. Direct to the top over surprisingly reasonable ground. Headed to Hopetoun Craig and the other 6 on this clockwise walk. Solo. | bolton | 20/08/2020 |
Solo. From end of public road at NT189093. Up track above Over Phawhope Bothy to its end, then continuation footpath before joining west ridge of Ettrick Pen above new trees to get to Summit. Continued to Hopetoun Craig and Wind Fell. A beautiful sunny day with far-reaching views from the summit. | pwbellarby | 08/08/2020 |
Solo trip. Western slopes above Over Phawhope bothy now planted with baby pine trees; the normal route will not be possible in a few years' time. | Invicta14 | 16/07/2020 |
Parked just up forestry track then followed track to Lamb Craig then up last fb to ridge and on to Dob's Craig. Across to Ettrick Pen and return by Over Cassock. Surprisingly enough saw nobody! | SS | 07/06/2020 |
Parked at road end and set off at 06:15 by moonlight with a temperature of-4C. Ettrick Pen (beautiful sunrise), Hopetoun Craig, Wind Fell, West Knowe, Loch Fell, Scaw'd Fell, Gateshaw Rig, Croft Head (met a badger), Capel Fell, Smidhope Hill, White Shank. Returned at 14:45. | PGCE | 19/11/2019 |
Circuit from Potburn via Over Phawhope: Ettrick Pen, Dob's Craig (with a rising traverse back to the main ridge), Hopetoun Craig, Wind Fell with its idiosyncratic summit marker, Capel Fell, Smidhope Law, White Shanks, descending between the burn and the forestry to the track just West of Over Phawhope. A fox led the way on the ascent from Over Phawhope, and hail and snow showers alternated with bright Autumn sunshine. | Nick Down1 | 26/10/2019 |
With Ikuko a long day over three Marilyns. Good clear weather for my No 600!! | GWR Chris | 21/05/2019 |
Pleasant stroll from Potburn past bothy. | willyross | 15/05/2019 |

Parked at Potburn then walked hill via Over Phawhope bothy, glorious weather for February. | alanm9 | 27/02/2019 |

CK | SheilaS | 30/12/2018 |
Started at fish farm, and reached Ettrick Pen via Croft Head, Wind Fell and Hopetoun Craig. Dropped down the west ridge to the bothy. Lots of forestry work in area including felling and new planting. After bothy took SU path back to Ettrick Head, then up grassy slopes to Capel Fell. Did not linger due to gale blowing so continued WNW back to start using forestry roads and picking up Sailfoot Law on the way, albeit with a small diversion. Very enjoyable. | trimarc2 | 25/09/2018 |
From Capel Fell via Ettrick Head, Wind Fell and Hopetoun Crag as round of 3 Grahams. Windy and chilly so kept on the move. Return to Ettrick Head and back to bridge via SUW. Cracking day. | MichaelF | 25/09/2018 |
Parked at end of road, on to bothy, track up hill and it goes up beyond to about 540m. Overcast but warm and breezy | iangalbraith | 05/08/2018 |
Parked at end of public road at 189093 - Along forest tracks to the 5 Star Over Phawhope bothy & then up to end of forest track which goes up through gap in forest - Picked up good path/track on to W. spur & up to summit cairn. Continued to Hopetoun Craig, Wind Fell, Loch Fell, West Knowe, Capel Fell, Smidhope Hill & White Shank. (S) | gerrybowes | 21/07/2018 |
From end of public road Ettrick valley. Followed Southern Uplands Way to Over Phawhope then track up Ettrick Pen over Wind Fell a Donald. Not easy to work out which bump is which hill. Down to Ettrick Head along fairly boggy SUW to excellent zig zag path up Croft Head. Back almost to Ettrick Head & followed fence to Capel Fell summit. 7 hours 35 in snow. | rogreeves | 06/04/2018 |
Fourth of the day. Long descent to the Bothy. | Play2End | 06/10/2017 |
Parking area at end of road just before Potburn. Over the bridge by Over Phawthorpe Bothy and followed path up to summit. With Eire, Evan, Sail, Danu, Coel & Alfie. | Dangerous Dave | 29/07/2017 |
Round of four Marilyns from Ettrick Water road head. Straight up from the low point of the road just past the parking as the forestry has been felled. Minor difficulty crossing Ettrick Water. | Owen B | 14/04/2017 |
Weather fair. | MountainMac | 02/04/2017 |
Who can resist bagging 3 Grahams in a day? From the Ettrick valley road end, over Ettrick Pen, Croft Head and Capel Fell, with numerous intervening tops. Very easy and fast walking on good paths, except for the steep descent from West Knowe. Great views of the Moffat hills throughout. | Gill | 02/12/2016 |
Alone, round of Ettrick. | Grinner | 11/09/2016 |
From Longhope Burn bridge via Over Phawhope | m0jla | 25/05/2016 |
13 mile circular from end of Ettrick Valley road, past Bothy followed signs to Ettrick Pen, up long ascent to top of Ettrick Pen (One of the best views in the area), along ridge West to Hopetoun Craig and boggy topped Wind Fell, changed direction heading for Loch Fell then West Knowe, then very steep descent down to foot of Croft Head, up and down great zigzag path to Croft Head top, then up Southern Uplands way to col, up to Capel Fell, then followed ridge over Smidhope Hill and White Shank, decided to leave Bodesbeck Law for another time, followed tracks back to end of road in Valley, Perfect Weather, terrain very good makes for comfy walking, saw one person all day. | DanTrig | 15/05/2016 |
Ettrick Pen Horseshoe. Plenty of forestry work going on. Good views from summit. Company: Solo | iandesbottes | 25/03/2016 |
Leading KHWC walk from Potburn, past Over Phawhope and rising traverse up snow to summit of EP; continued to Hopetoun Craig and Wind Fell. V cold N wind but sunshine esp. in sheltered lunch spot just below ridge. First ascent was with J and MB on three Grahams day, 25/07/2009; EP being the second of that walk. | jacobus | 05/03/2016 |
Stayed in the boffy really pleasant | Glenford | 01/11/2015 |
Hopetoun Craig, Ettrick Pen, Dob's Craig and Phawhope Kips from end of metalled road at Potburn. Showery day, improving later - very wet underfoot. Little in the way of paths other than occasional quad bike tracks. | Crib Goch | 29/08/2015 |

6 Donalds from Ettrick Head | nickywood1 | 09/11/2014 |
Over Wind Hill to the third Marilyn of the day after Capel Fell and Croft Head. Pleasant, especially after Wind Hill. The W ridge down Ettrick Pen had a worn path to Potburn. Just before Potburn there's a bothy that would be handy for some big >1 day walks but it was very busy with forestry and excavation in Sep 2014. Got back to the car within 5 mins of my brother, who did Andrewhinney Hill instead today. | pwheeler | 21/09/2014 |

During a long weekend in Moffat, parked near the bridge to the fishfarm on the A708 at Shortwoodend. With Martin66 & DavyB, followed the tracks until just short of Selcoth Burn & turned up the track following N side of the burn uphill. This peters out underneath the ominously named Broken Back. Given the state of the frozen, insubstantial ground, that seemed a distinct possibility. Decided therefore on an ascent directly N up the more secure slopes of Croft Head: brutal but quickish. Descended to the col & then straight up to West Knowe & on to Loch Fell, continuing to Wind Fell, over Hopetoun Craig & the brilliant viewpoint of Ettrick Pen. Daylight fading, a rapid descent down to the SUW & along to Ettrick Head followed. Martin66 eyed up Capel Fell, but virtually dark, we didn't fancy Broken Back much & edged our way along the path on the S side of Selcoth Burn before crossing to join the outward track. These hills are probably better done from the Ettrick road end. | NotReallyABagger | 01/12/2012 |
A long round of twelve hills started from the end of the road close to Ettrick Head. | thenomad | 27/11/2012 |
