Had a walk up from the town. Paid on for the tour and had a couple of hours to kill so first went into the museum then round the cathedral. Nice informative tour | The-Z-Man | 11/02/2024 |
Walked from station, then via Framwellgate Bridge, Silver Street, Market Place and Saddler Street. | Phileas Fogg | 30/08/2023 |

No access to the keep as not safe according to one of the senior guides. He said that the whole of the mound that the Keep sits on is all man made. | Alan Caine | 15/09/2019 |

Castle Mound as RHW. | chalky1953 | 31/12/2018 |
Parked NZ 2855 4271 - new housing on S edge Gilesgate, off A181. Pleasant FPs to river, cross bridge NZ 2780 4248 adjacent to which is free parking after 3pm for about 6 cars (no spaces!). Summit is, of course, barred and bolted from all sides. Alternate mound at NZ 27299 42196 easy access | carole engel | 31/12/2018 |
Visited all points including tower mound. Easy access over by litter bin in the square or by gate, number 9 or next to it for steps. | Adrian | 18/12/2018 |

With Jo, not sure where the precise top is so wandered everywhere that was publicly available. Thought the Cathedral was more interesting. Weather; fine but cold day with good visibility. | amblerbob | 21/02/2018 |
Parked up in Gilesgate and ran here. Been here several times but never for this purpose. | madaddo | 17/03/2017 |
Did the tour but could not get at the high point despite buttering up the very pleasant senior guide; so, not ticked. Not sure if I will be able to get over the wall as per RHW. | summitsup | 03/11/2016 |
Visiting Uni with Eilidh. | stever | 27/06/2016 |
Fri eve on way north (1) from path to N hopped over low wall and up ivy clad bank to access steep grass bank (flight of steps) at foot of castle wall. Castle mound man made to some extent but castle would have been built on highest ground? (2) other candidate for natural top is the mound between the cathedral entrance and the Dept of Music, on Castle Green which is open 24 hours a day, although this has the look of a manmade mound. Castle mound well worth a visit anyway. Rousing chorus of Land of Hope and Glory down in the courtyard as I summitted was a nice touch. And I like to think my Ron hills and buffalo jacket blended nicely with the students Friday night garb :-) | RHW | 09/10/2015 |
Castle courtyard | Mariana Trench | 03/04/2015 |
Spent £5 and joined a tour, but you don't get to see the highest part visible from outside, that was private accommodation. No, not penthouse apartments but students' quarters - not all students are poor! Took reading on R as you enter courtyard. Higher inside castle itself but GPS device didn't work inside building. | Aye Jimmy | 02/01/2015 |
Entered as 05 May. Numerous visits | PreCambrianLife | 08/05/2014 |
Hadn't planned this, nice surprise. Hard to say where the natural top is. | agentmancuso | 13/04/2014 |
Very difficult to identify the precise top so wandered everywhere that was publicly available (and up the tower). | moorsman | 18/09/2010 |
Walked around area w Jenx, got as close as possible to top. | nordicstar | 02/06/2007 |

Rode here on my tiny bike from Hartlepool, aged 10. Didn't go in the Castle, but climbed to top of Cathedral Tower, which is much higher. I reckon that counts!! Date an estimate, but it was probably about then. | IanHHill | 10/06/1956 |
