From Linhope layby, through Linhope farm then straight up Lightning Hill. Followed the fence to Wether Law, Millstone Edge then to Cauldcleuch Head. Back to Millstone Edge then Tudhope Hill, Carlin Tooth, Bye Hill and Dod Hill. Back down to Linhope using the same descent as Smocks & Denim. Just shy of 12 miles, frozen ground made the going a lot easierGary Heath19/01/2024
From Priesthaugh Farm. No Parking signs at end of track up glen but there is a small parking space at cattle grid on road just north of farm. Walked back down road then up good track to Shiel Cottage, crossing the burn just north of the house, picking up an ATV track that follows line of fence at edge of felled woodland most of the way up to top of Skelfhill Fell. From here followed line of fence up to Cauldcleuch Head. Had planned to head out to Great Moor HIll but was short of time so headed east over the 608m top and dropped down to the Cat Sike burn that forms a natural firebreak in the forest covering the northern slopes. A few fallen trees to negotiate on way down and had to cross the burn from one side to the other a few times before pushing through final line of trees to reach forest track. Decided to head for Dun Rig so continued following burn down from forest track which was rough going to the sheepfold at foot of glen and back up to the main track in from PH Farm.Jossker18/10/2023
From Priesthaugh, parked on the grass by the wall just past the track. Track to Priesthaugh Hill, up ATV track to Skefill Fell, then Caudcleuch Head and along the fenceline to GreatMoor Hill, and Maiden Paps Off SW to enter firebreak at big fallen tree then easily down on a path (was marked on old 1:50k not on new maps). Right along track for 0.5km, then take path marked on map in Westerley direction for 0.5km (a few fallen traas to pass by) to hit next track. Turn left the follow track all the way to edge of forest. Follow wall to Garden plantation, then left and over ford to pick track past farm buildings and down to road. Left along road to Priesthaugh. With KeithByTheC and Carol 12.5miles.JulieB08/09/2023

Superb panoramic views all around from up here today. Reasonably easy going this time of year the majority of the way, just quite a fair old plod getting to the top.Alex C03/07/2023
Repeat ascent. Parked on grass verge on south side of road about 80 yards west of the bridge to Braidlie. Ascent of Greatmoor Hill via Tongue Rigg. Ridge to Cauldcleuch Head, then back via Winterlair Hill and the ruin at Braidliehope. Very humid. Ground was bone dry.vuirich17/06/2023
SMC round solo. Visited Hermitage Castle and Chapel beforehand. Grand day, good lighting. Easy to follow descent via painted posts which avoids some of the bog.Nick Canute19/09/2022
Weather fair.MountainMac18/07/2022
Started from the forestry entrance north of Geordies hill and followed the SMC route to Cauldcleuch head, from here I made a change to the descent route to take in five Donald Dewey's Millstone Edge, Wether Law, Tudhope hill, Carlin tooth and Ellson fell. Seven hours for Thirteen miles with 3800ft of ascent, the climb up to Carlin tooth is particularly brutal at this stage in the walk. After Ellson fell there is a track over the 494 point which leads to the road all being a couple of miles from the finish.WAYNE ROWLETT05/05/2022

I took the caravan down to Moffat for a few days and of course the weather was less than good, until today when I'm heading home. I got Cauldcleuch Head (619m, a Graham & Donald) yesterday in the Scottish Borders between Hawick and Langholm. I parked at Linhope on the A7 and started at 12 noon. There was a slight navigational mishap with me ascending Wether Law instead of Millstone Edge, which meant I had to walk an extra 2km around to Millstone Edge. It rained all day and started snowing as I approached Cauldcleuch Head and kept snowing until I got down below 300m, by which point it was dark. I got back to the car thoroughly soaked 5hrs after starting.chillyman803/01/2022

From parking area at NY 43896 97787, along track to end, dropped down to Burnhope burn, along 2nd track to gate and then up hillside following blue topped posts towards summit. Terrible weather so return by same route.MichaelF02/10/2021
A dry day. Climbed up via Tudehope Hilland Millstone Edge. Descended Pennygant hill and Stob Law - ok. And then down towards Billhope. Big mistake dense new forestry.colazione11/07/2021
1 of 2: Parked at 439978. Down the road to Billhope then a track to a small quarry. Green posts lead up through the quarry and along a track above it. The post leaving the track is hard to spot high up on the right. Then green posts all the way. With karen.ChrisR08/07/2021
From car park at forestry west of Billhope, over Tudhope Hill, Millstone Edge, Langtae Hill, Cauldcleuch Head and down North Mid Hill, following the green posts marking the new path to the Billhope Burn.Alan21/04/2021
from Billhope via glen and Muckle Land Knowe, and back same way.IanHHill17/10/2020
From NY 4392 9777, up SW side forest to Tudhope Hill. Followed fenceline to Millstone Edge then continued to follow it round to here. Dropped down over steep rough ground to NY 4461 9978 to pick up a good track back to Billhope, then half mile back up road.jonglew05/09/2020
Started at the forest entrance car park area, over Tudhope Hill, then Millstone Edge and finally Cauldcleuch Head. 8 miles in just over 3 1/2 hours.Alan Caine30/08/2020
From good parking at 438978. Carlin Tooth, Tudhope Hill, Millstone Edge, Wether Law and finally Cauldcleuch Head. Headed don North Mid Hill but rough going in places. Pleasant walk down valley after picking up path at 445999 and down to Billhope. Walk up to where the car was parked. Solo. Just under 11 miles and 6.5 hours overs some rough terrain.bolton21/07/2020
CW circuit from car park in Billhope forest access road. ATV track up Tudhope Hill, Millstone Edge, an out and back to Wether Law, over Langtae Hill to Skelfhill Fell and Cauldcleugh Head. The return by North Mid Hill leads to a good vehicle track alongside the Billhope Burn. I'm fairly sure I had an eagle circling overhead for company, along with the third Borders fox in as many walks, as I started back along the track and evening fell.Nick Down106/03/2020
Sixth visit. why do I keep punishing myself on this dreary hill?Colin Crawford05/02/2020
Parked on verge at the end of the passing place after the bridge to Braidlie. Up the Braidley Burn track, very scenic and easy going, to Braidliehope ruin. Easy river crossings to get onto the E ridge of Crossbow Hill, step over the electric fence and gain the ridge by the landslips. Firm, easy grassy going, contour round to the col below Little Land Knowe, then easy going on an ATV track to MLK, where it all goes to shit, swampy ATV track marked with poles to Cauldcleuch Head. More of the same to the descent down Windy Edge, then track goes through pillowy vegetables. Glad it was a circuit, climbing and descending the same way would be a recipe for suicide. Great relief to get onto decent terrain going up Great Moor, except for a short bit of hags about 1/2 way up. Dry ATV track down but it goes to shit on the way up to the Kipp, but here you can step over the fence and contour round on mossy grass down to a gate onto Shiel Knowe. Muddy field leads to the track to Old BraidlieGill22/01/2020
Started at the forest entrance car park area - along the road to the track starting at Billhope, following the line of the Billhope Burn until it reaches a small quarry. A steep path marked with a green-topped fence stobs heads to a grassy path up Stob Fell, which remains marked by green posts along its ridge to Pennygant Hill, Muckle Land Knowe and almost to Cauldcleuch Head itself. The ground was frozen solid today so was pretty straight-forward, but I would imagine that more temperate weather would make it a mud-hopping trial. Once around the head of Langtae Sike it is a steady climb to Millstone Edge, following a fence line and more markers most of the way. Tudhope Hill is easily added, then a nice SW descent down grassy ATV tracks leads all the way back to the start. Should take no more than 3 hours.summitter01/12/2019
via Greatmoor and S following edge for better going. Fording at Braidliehopem0jla17/10/2019
Car in quarry at Billhope Hass. Gap in electric fence next to old wood, and ATV track to the top of Tudhope Hill. ATV track around fences to Millstone edge and onto Cauldcleugh Head. Return the same.Moorponder09/10/2019
Our first walk from the Hermitage valley. Parked just N of bridge S of Billhope and followed the track up the Billhope Burn. After < 1 km there is an information board the Gorrenberry woodland trails. It could be useful to photograph as this woodland, regenerating and plantation, covers most of this hill's area. In the end, we followed our planned route on the N side of Woodie Sike as it was obvious and marked by posts. We followed posts all the way to the HP- wet going once on the peat moor but not too bad. After yesterday's rain, the views were fabulously clear. Next, on to Greatmoor Hill. With brother, Petepwheeler23/09/2019
Saw no one all day, hard to believe the green/blue fence posts are part of way marked path. Tough goingcjo13/07/2019
Parked at Castle, biked to Braidlie farm and onto Braidliehope ruin. Competent bikers could reach top of Queen's Mire. Warm and sunny.iangalbraith07/07/2019
Cauldcleuch Head and Greatmoor Hill from Hermitage Castle. Recorded route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2019/05/sunday-28-april-cauldcleuch-head.htmlGayle28/04/2019
From end of forestry track above Billhope straight up Tudhope Hill then on to Millstone Edge. Out and back to Wether Law before the rough passage to Cauldcleuch Head (no ATV tracks). Came down to Stob Fell then followed markers to Bught Shank with a pleasant enough road walk to finish.SS31/03/2019
Tudhope Hill, Millstone Edge, Caulcleuch Hill, back to Tudhope Hill, steeply down and up Carlin Tooth, Ellson Fell -both tops - then walk out down pathless Glen to Mosspaul and bus to Langholm. Great day. Empty country which deserves exploringtrimarc226/03/2019
With J on a rugby/walking weekend. Parked just S of bridge near Billhope where there is room for a few cars to park off the minor road. Started overcast & chilly. Followed the track up the Billhope Burn & then took first branch up side of trees which briefly doubles back & goes through an old gateway. After that straight up E on to Pennygant Hill on springy moss. Picked up ATV tracks marked by posts which don't stick completely to crest but make the going much easier to the summit. By now the back end of the weather system stretching right across the sky was approaching on a gentle breeze. The sun suddenly came out & the hills took on a totally different look. Magic. Retraced steps to Blackgrain Side where a different set of posts marking a path leading steeply down W to the end of the outbound track. OS maps are way out of date around here with a lot more forestry. The display board located about 1km from the start next to the track showing the paths marked by the posts is usefulNotReallyABagger14/10/2018

From Billhope. As wet and tedious as everColin Crawford21/02/2018
Solo. Parked at Hermitage Castle. Along road and up track to Braidliehope (dilapidated house) and sheepfold beyond. Rather rough track continues further, going a little to the east of the summit of Winterlair Hill. Up rough ground to Windy Swire (col between Cauldcleuch Head and Greatmoor Hill) and up Windy Edge to Summit of Cauldcleuch Head. Final bit a bit miry. Descended to sheepfold at NY465999 where I found and followed a path that joins the track on Winterlair Hill. A few drops of drizzle early on and then nice and sunny.pwbellarby07/10/2017

A slog to get here from the Marilyn. Glad it was clear as navigation could be a problem. Tedious plateaux.Play2End25/07/2017
From car (9:35)at Braidlie entrance, followed valley to Braidliehope ruin, then up grassy track behind over Queen's Mire. Best to follow this to col then up ridge; attempt to cut corner much rougher. Boggy on plateau. Followed path along ridge to Greatmoor Hill. Good views, some wind. Cont down S ridge to 1st top of Hermitage Hill then down W of woodland. Had to vault fence to avoid inquisitive cows. Finally track to Old Braidlie and back to car (1:30). Hot mainly sunny day.dbb17/06/2017
