from road end in upper Ettrick, SUW TO NT 150 043 then track to open moor, | BLACKHILL | 07/11/2023 |
Parked where the SUW leaves the road at Bellshaw Pool after watching our son Sam go through Moffat in the Tour o the Borders cycle event. Then same route as daviemore. Caravans gone. Notice says to use the high route but no forestry work as it was a Sunday. With Karen. | ChrisR | 03/09/2023 |
Cycled from Moffat to hairpin/caravans at NT148037. Track above this blocked by fallen trees but possible to head vertically up to open ground and ridge to top. Back to bike and on to West Knowe/Loch Fell. | daviemore | 23/04/2023 |
Round of 4 from Fishery to N. 3/4. Steep up from valley to SE and too tussocky off to NE. | davechaffey | 29/10/2022 |
Very pleasantly surprised with the long range views from up here, with seemingly half of southern Scotland out on show all around. | Alex C | 28/10/2022 |
Opposite the right turn ( from Moffat) thereis a delicious tarred turning area . Def room for a car or two….to avoid parking at the passimg place before bridge. Use the SU Way signage , gates all open. When you getinto FLScotland area, keep on the ‘poor weather’ main track…….check map ( i didnt), take a right turn steeply up hill. Pass two forgotten caravans, and then turn left into forest. I had to rumba under 5 sets pr fallen trees…..
if someone could do that walk with a hand saw ……

Thrn onto open hill fell, feint animal track - atv….which if you follow this will take to a boundary fence, turn left and onto the summit. Large Cairn beyond at a view point. Returned the same eay. With my navigation al error, 10 . 5. Miles ….. | VerySlowPlodder | 10/10/2022 |
Parked near Kirk Brae for long circular route. Took farm track to reach top of Broadfield Height. Continued with some traversing to reach steep climb to Breckonside Hill. Negotiated rough ground to reach approach to Big Hill from E. Returned to E and took track through felled forestry to join ridge and reach summit of Yadburgh Hill. On to Scaw'd Fell via steep descent and ascent. Descent to Garrogill and path climbing ENE to emerge to N of Ewelairs Hill. Continued to Ewelairs Hill, Ruegill Hill, Black Hill and rough ground on firebreak through to Laverhay Heights. Continued to Criffell and rough route through trees and then track to Fingland Fell. Descent W (some track, rough felled ground and then pasture) to reach the road and wealk back to start. Some rough ground on this route, particularly in forestry sections | RobertP | 25/08/2022 |
Solo. From N of the bridge over Moffat Water near Bellshaw Pool Followed the Southern Upland Way (original route) eastwards and then the forest track. At NT14780369 there is a sharp left bend where the track enters the mature forest. I soon came across fallen trees so I left the track to go up the hillside through the trees to rejoin the track higher up. This was straightforward. The track splits, as shown on the OS 1:25,000 map, with the righthand branch, which I followed, going towards the top of Coomb Cairn. This track is rather faint and has not been used as a track for many years. From the top of Coomb Cairn followed a path to the summit of Scaw'd Fell. A warm sunny day with no rain. | pwbellarby | 15/06/2022 |
Same route as Gill | curlebd | 02/06/2022 |

Parked on SUW at NT107042 (11:45). Cycled up SUW for about 2 km, but uncomfortably steep, so walked thereafter. Followed forest road eastward to 150043, then the branch leading SW till it leaves the wood at about 149036. Continued downward along edge of forest, but track ended in about 200m and had to climb steeply through trackless heather to top of ridge. Best is to ascend the knoll at 148034 and follow a faint straight path along the ridge top to the fence about 147030, then along this to the summit. It was the hottest day for 100 years, and therefore hazy, but views were still good. Returned by same route, finishing 15:45. | dbb | 08/09/2021 |
slog up heather after Croft Head | jef | 18/05/2021 |
Good parking near Kirk Brae church (NY 1309 9636). Through Leithenhall Farm to Broadfield Height -> Breckonside Hill -> Craig Fell (trig surface block) -> Big Hill -> Yadburgh Hill. From there followed fenceline SE to end of tree line (NT 1395 0276), then diagonally to meet fenceline again at 535m spot height, whence fenceline to Scaw'd. Retraced steps to Logan Gail, then on to Priestgill Head. Returned over Broken Back and down through Laverhay Farm. | jonglew | 06/03/2021 |
An easy walk up the SU way branching off onto an older logging road leading to Coomb Cairn. A perfectly fine path to the fence and then up to the fence post at the top. No view from the cairn. Met Dangerous Dave while I was just finishing my lunch, so had good company towards the top of the hill and for the walk down, which would have been dull otherwise. Chance meetings are good! | Gill | 20/01/2020 |
Parked below Craigbeck by the bridge over Moffat Water. Easy walk on forest roads along the SUW with Alfie. We met Gill on the way up and summited together. A very pleasant walk back with Gill. | Dangerous Dave | 20/01/2020 |
Up SUW low level route from Moffat end to forest track to about 500m. Trod thereafter (human as sheep would not take the line) through short heather - bit wet but would be pleasant enough in summer. Cairn a little way out from summit. | SS | 12/01/2020 |
Parked at road end and set off at 06:15 by moonlight with a temperature of-4C. Ettrick Pen (beautiful sunrise), Hopetoun Craig, Wind Fell, West Knowe, Loch Fell, Scaw'd Fell, Gateshaw Rig, Croft Head (met a badger), Capel Fell, Smidhope Hill, White Shank. Returned at 14:45. | PGCE | 19/11/2019 |
From Loch Fell. My brother, Pete and I parted ways, he returned to Selcoth, I went down the SW ridge to Cowan Fell. Then down to Garrogill, R and RW, SUW, Coomb Cairn to Scawd Fell. The start and finish were a bit rough with thin trods, but there was a lot of easy walking on forest roads in between. Yadburgh Hill would have needed serious heather bashing so I returned to Coomb Cairn and on to forest roads to Bellshaw Pool, where Pete met me and drove me back to Moffat. He'd been on Scaw'd Fell a few years ago. The whole walk, from Selcoth, was a very enjoyable route, varied and interesting on a warm, slightly hazy day. | pwheeler | 20/09/2019 |
Path leads from summit of Coomb Cairn - albeit across rough heather and long tussocky grass | 49pp | 05/08/2019 |
Parked at Bellshaw Pool and followed the track past Craigbeck Hope to just before Coomb Carin then the trod to the top. Returned the same way. | Fellhugger | 04/08/2019 |
From Yadburgh Hill it was a steep descent and reascent to Logan Gail. This was hard work. It was also hard work ascending to the summit of Scaw'd Fell due to the vegetation. From the summit we descended to Comb Cairn. We then descended a track to the SUW, which we followed to Bellshaw Pool bridge. From there it was a short walk to the car at the disused quarry on the A&)*. With JT. | Sprog | 29/06/2019 |
From bridge below Craigbeck, up SUW forestry track to 300m then more tracks to NW face at burn crossing 143034. A bike would have saved time as far as this point. Right up the burn, a few trees, then fellings, then steep and trackless heather. | Topographer57 | 25/05/2019 |
From Selcoth, with three other Marilyns (+ 2 non-Marilyn Donalds). Breezy, some sunshine, cold. Time excludes breaks. | Rounsfell | 23/03/2019 |
Parked N of bridge by Bellshaw Pool. Along SUW then hard right up to Comb Cairn and onto Scaw'd Fell. Had a wander over all contenders for summit. Back down to SUW alternate route along to, and up, E ridge of Croft Head. Back on SUW over Gateshaw Rig. 12 miles. With PM. | CJM | 13/11/2018 |
Parked up at 106044 and followed SUW to 150042. Headed south on another forest track and then a faint path to the summit with CM. Mist which gradually cleared gave great views. Headed to Croft Head. | bolton | 13/11/2018 |
From SU way via forestry road starting at 150043. Thick mist so followed compass to top. Tough underfoot despite there being some little used tracks to follow. | trimarc2 | 26/09/2018 |
Parked in layby on N. side of bridge at 106043 - Up SUW to track junction at 150043 - Up forest track to ridge & then faint path through heather to summit fence post currently topped with a small rock. Continued to Croft Head (S) | gerrybowes | 07/08/2018 |

From track start near bridge at Bellshaw Pool. Followed Southern Upland Way to the sharp right branch, and short hillside path to summit. Dusting of snow, Great views when near top | N.Morters | 09/12/2017 |
Quick up and down from the bridge over the Moffat water - 13.6k just under 3 hours. | NormanW | 02/06/2017 |
From Loch Fell on round of four Marilyns. Only having an ancient 1:50,000 I descended too far west off Cowan Fell and spent 15 minutes in dense forestry. Wouldn't have made that mistake with a recent 1:25,000. Ascent of Scaw'd Fell from Garrogill was steep and heathery, but I've had worse. | Owen B | 14/04/2017 |
Parked by bridge over Moffat Water and walked up forest track to open hillside and summit. | AndrewFinnimore | 11/07/2016 |

Parked at turning circle on A701 at NT109047, then along SUW. Mostly forest views, but enlivened by snow which justified wearing crampons for the first time in living memory. | agentmancuso | 07/02/2009 |
