Passing on the A30 so went for it - horrible! Wouldn't recommend the gorse/heather/rhodo/bracken thrash, may be better staying on the path and seeing if the track on the 1:25K map exists. Once gain, why? | tim747 | 08/07/2023 |
From minor road to north. Parked in layby near start of permisive path. When path turns right take small path up through small trees/bushes which goes more or less straight up until it turns left to gate into grassy summit area. | mart0797 | 23/03/2023 |
Also known as Pines Tip and now fully vegetated/ reclaimed. Built by the English Clay Co.(est. 1919) and since 1999 in the hands of IMERYs, the French mining giants, who have 20+quarries and employ 1000 in Cornwall producing 1 million tons of china clay (kaolin) each year which is used in paper (makes it shiny and smooth) cardboard, porcelain, bricks, paints, sealants. This will produce 5 m tons of waste a year so presumably new tumps could yet appear. Be careful if following PGCS's route, dont turn left on the 1st crossing path but continue steeply uphill through the gorse until you reach a T junction where you turn left to reach the 5 bar gate and lovely open grass. If you turn left too soon you come to a crossable fence in @30m. Go back now unless you really want to fight up through thick rhododendrons & brambles -even a few metres of which will leave you cursing, shredded and in tears. I know. IMERYS have discovered Lithium here so more landscape changes are likely. | Chris Pearson | 20/01/2023 |
Plenty roadside parking. Through gate, shortly after bend turn left uphill through trees. Snapped off loads of branches. At a level clearing straight ahead up through more trees, again snapping branches as I went. At level track went L to where trees block the way, then R zigzag uphill through tall weeds past a few trees to a fence. Over this on easier ground to summit. | Minto | 01/07/2022 |
Ridiculous overgrown spoil heap. Path through vegetation so far then a thrash through briars etc to barbed wire fence. Hop over and you're there - but why ? | NormanW | 30/06/2022 |
After Hensbarrow Downs, strange to spend one's holiday climbing spoil heaps- this one in a more advanced stage of vegetation. If you don't have a GPS with you, PGCE's route description is most helpful. At the clearing, carry on straight, plunging into rhodedendron (at least, not prickly!) before emerging at the cross track, now more like a L turn on the path. Open pasture summit area. With Pete. | pwheeler | 12/06/2022 |
As Des and others. 1.03 km, 55 m of ascent. No cattle today. | malcorbett | 26/04/2022 |
Permissive path from the north - not quite where the footpath should be. After 100 yards a small path off to the left. Follow reasonably easily. Keeping left all the time and finally reach the gate. Then easy.
Whole route not recommended in shorts. Brambles and overgrown in places. | destaylor | 21/10/2021 |
As PGCE. Easy verge parking opposite the permissive path at SW 9163 5748 - S. along path for about 50m & then left up increasingly overgrown path to meet 'crossing track' at SW 9172 5732 - Turned left & along path for about 140m to gate - Over gate & then less than 100m up to the summit GR. Nice day for a summit, good view over west cornwall where penwith hills could be seen, cycled up a really nice footpath behind fraddon moto park, then took left up some zig zaggy steep climb to a style, cows resident on top of hill | FelixClayhill | 13/09/2020 |
Path opposite field gates were you can park easily. Followed directions of others. Featureless on top and not the most inspiring. Solo. | bolton | 24/07/2020 |
Parked on a minor road to the north. Followed a path south, picking up a geocache or two before zig zagging up to the summit. | jigglybones | 18/02/2020 |
The route previously described by PGCE worked just fine for me. Had the added bonus that as this was the last hill of the weekend it had great access to the main road home. | Father Ted | 05/05/2019 |
AS PGCE, I hate the brambles down in Cornwall. | cjo | 05/04/2019 |
Permissive path starts about 100m west of path shown on map, opposite field gates (parking spaces). 50m along, take faint path left (getting overgrown) to a faint crossing track (further up after the clearer bit just after a small bump). Turn left to reach gate, then easy ground to overgrown summit area. (Direct route up is now getting very overgrown - take a strimmer!). | PGCE | 06/07/2018 |
Up the permissive path to the artificial summit. Not at all satisfying, artificiality in extremis... | nordicstar | 17/05/2018 |
From north on permissive path. A route took me to a gate and then easily to HP in rough stuff. | PeterD | 24/04/2018 |
From lane to the north. The permissive path is marked as such and leads you close to the top. The last bit is still a bit of a whack but not for long. | clivevilla | 12/11/2017 |
as for denise very dense stuff at top. | arranc | 14/07/2017 |
Used permissive path from road to access HP over vegetated quarry spoil easily, though a bit over grown with bramble and gorse in places. Top obvious, possibly marked with small embeddded rock. Hazy views over over working quarries- even on a sunday!U | Denise | 19/03/2017 |
From the N starting on Permissive path then path up vegetated slope to summit plateau. We had intended to continue to Halwyn Pyramid and Melbur Mound but too much activity on roads and in works to make this feasible even on a Sunday morning. | RichardM | 19/03/2017 |
Only because it's someone else's idea of a hill and spoils my Hump total if I ignore it like I should do. | Martin R | 17/03/2017 |
From permissive path from the north. Not to much bramble but wouldn't want to do it in summer or autumn | DARRENG | 15/03/2017 |
Parked to the SW then made use of paths when available to find flattish gorse filled summit with Iain Brown. | Dugswell2 | 09/03/2017 |
From roadside parking at start of path, simple up and down, may not be one for the summer. | rhalstead | 04/03/2017 |
Permissive path runs roughly S from SW9162057460, with parking on N side road. A divert off the path required at some point and a fence to negotiate to gain top of a flat hill with plenty of gorse. HP not easy to determine but some gorse is higher than others. | jonglew | 22/02/2017 |
There's a permissive path from the road but it falls shy of the summit. | Chris Peart | 16/01/2017 |
Sketchy paths to summit, top rather indistinct amidst gorse. | Colin Crawford | 16/01/2017 |
Early morning trip down to St Austell. Good parking on wide minor road to caravan site. Scrubby top in gorse bushes. With AW. | Campbell Singer | 08/12/2016 |
SW 91770 57257, 223m, mature gorsy brambly summit, permissive path from nnw, well used. Noticeably higher viewed from NE summit or from Treviscoe to east. | RHW | 27/11/2016 |
