Started from track on minor road. Similar way to everyone else. Red legged partridge , pheasants and southern county cheviots. Lunch near summit. The bit in the old forest is hummocky tissocky. All lower gates opened so easily. BlissVerySlowPlodder06/03/2024
Parked just on the verge beside the bridge at Grid 31838886. Followed the track to Calkin then the high track to the gates at Grid 29438858. On to the hill, gap in the fence 30 yards back. Follow the fence line up picking up the ATV track to the top. High spot is approx 200yds along the fire break. Back to the fence then followed the ATV track to Whitecleuch Fell then down over Bombie Hill, descent to the gate beside the wood then across the field to the next one, continue to the the main road/track.smocks and denims24/11/2023
track from B709 forest edge to summit, ewe hill returned via clackanna sike and forest track.BLACKHILL01/10/2023
Space to park at the track entrance on the B709. Along the track, taking the higher southerly track where it forks at Calkin, to the edge of the plantation, under the barbed wire fence and up the moor side of the fence. Only close to the top did I realise that there was an ATV track a few metres further away from the fence. Then easily to the distinctive but primitive two pronged summit feature. Retraced steps except that I used the ATV track.Owen B01/05/2023
On Bike from Lockerbie bound to Moffat via Grange Fell. From valley to S. Bog not quite as bad as advertised. Just beat dark and then long ride N.davechaffey28/10/2022
By bike from Crawthat up new windfarm tracks. Under-researched route – too long compared to NE approach. Bit from windfarm to summit was horrendous knee-high tussocks, pathless, wet, just awful. Strongly discommend this approach. Rounsfell27/07/2021
Parked at start of track on B709 and then a round of hills starting with Ewe Hill and ending on Bombie Hill.Alan Caine05/05/2021
From road end, cycled to just past the fork at NY 302886. Walked up the track to just before the edge of the wood and followed an indistinct ATV track over the heather which led to a gate at the corner of open country at 290875. A faint path led along the firebreak to the summit close to a rudimentary wooden structure. Sunny and warm. Finished 17:45.dbb22/04/2021
Parked at the track end for Hopsprig and followed the track until reaching the forest, following edge of forest to summit.jigglybones17/02/2021
Roadside parking by the bridge near Hopsrig. Good track all the way to the forest gate then followed fence at forest edge up to corner. Tussocks galore in the wide firebreak. High point marked by 3 sticks stuck in the ground. Back the same way. With Alfie.Dangerous Dave11/10/2020
Parked at the wide farm track entrance on the B709 just past Hopsrig 318 889. Followed track, taking the higher of the 2 tracks that join just before Calkin, followed track until it enters forest. Just before that point there is a path up to the left with a gap below the barbed wire, think the farmer must use this for his ATV. Followed sheep tracks and then an ATV track all the way up to the top corner of the forest. Turned right through a gate and it is 183m through a wide clearing in the forest, with traces of a path to the summit which is marked by 3 little sticks. Returned the same way, 5.4miles, 2hrs 15 round trip with photo stops etc.JulieB23/08/2020
Parked in wide farm track entrance on B709 (NY 3185 8884). Track closed part way up for forestry operation; continued on to Clackanna Sike (NY 2843 8785), followed that up over rough ground to a point between the trig and the hill top before doing both.jonglew06/01/2020
Wind farm access roads to Ewe Hill then rough going along fire break to Calkin Rig. Took lower access road back to vary the walk. Pleasant enough.SS15/12/2019
Track to forest edge; straight up. Down E part of spur to sheepfolds.m0jla16/10/2019
Frim Layby on B709 just outside Langholm - Steep track up through conifers - forestry track then path onto Mid Hill (with its trig) - Along the ridges to the Wind farm (and another trig bagged) - We then follow the edge of the forestry to the summit of Calkin Fell. A vast lonely place. Thomas Telford was born in the valley belowbriandavies12/05/2019

Late afternoon run, mostly dark from track near Bombie Cottage. Track then up grassy slopes onto Shaw Hill. Follows forest edge, sometimes on ATV track. Through the gate and along firebreak as others.N.Morters11/12/2018
Parked at first gate on track to Calkin - about half mile up from public road. Filthy track, walked to forest edge at 294885 climbed steep bank then followed fence to summit. A better route down was via 296883 acorss flank of moor down to sheepfold and out of gate back on to track at the building called Calkin. Not a bad summit at all, wind farm visible towards Langholm direction from the top. Operation short wave ham radio using Morse and Voice comms for SOTA from the summit.G4OBK (Phil)13/11/2018
From the east, track up to edge of forestry then NE ridge.Topographer5708/09/2018
A nice walk, shame about the summit. Up the track by Bombie cottage to just before the forestry, up through a gateway, and a vague ATV track which meanders up the ridge outside the forestry to the gate. Over this into the wide tussocky firebreak to the summit. The summit knoll has got a couple of broken bits of wood which may or may not be the highest point.Gill26/05/2018
From end of windfarm track, where it meets the B7068 to the SW of the hill. Bike up the track to within 1km of summit, then rough-going on foot up through a break in the trees. Recorded route and write-up at: http://gayleybird.blogspot.com/2018/04/calkin-rig-and-grange-fell.htmlGayle19/04/2018

Two months to the day since last Marilyn. Parked on grass verge near farm track just north of Bombie cottages (NY 31861 88846). Anti-clockwise route past Calkin byre then head up NE ridge to summit. Summit is on fire break about 20m past first fb junction when approached from ESE plantation boundary corner. Returned by following fence to Shaw Hill and picking up track used for ascent.mntainman24/04/2017

After Grange Fell. From Hopsrig road end as others. Walked up track to edge of forest, then 4wd track to gate on summit ridge. Wandered up and down the ride in vain to find an obvious high point. Back over Shaw hill to avoid muddy cows. Pleasant glen.Thearlaichdubh08/03/2014

Approached from the East after ridge walk, rough but found trod for part of way. continued to Ewe Hill Trig which is very rough.Anton12/08/2012
Parked just off road at wide farm entrance. Up tract then onto hill to bag Shaw Hill on way to summit clearing. Summit as describe but further on near trees seems as high to me and GPS. Straighter return route.Dugswell211/08/2012
