5 mile run loop with Pauline .. both Drums .. parked by Seven Sisters fire station .. used RoW from SN820091 .. big Drum was interesting .. climbed up from SN818103 .. Ive yet to run on the moon but it must be like this :-) .. top according to Summit Bag may have been bulldozed as had to drop down a bit to bag it .. back the same way | milejunkie | 29/04/2023 |
Easy parking by fire station in Seven Sisters. Paths and tracks, then steep climb to summit of Mynydd y Drum, which is currently on an earth ridge at approx SN 8196 1084. My GPS gave a height of 342m. On to the SW top. | PGCE | 23/04/2023 |

Diggers were in action on top of hill, maybe building it higher | JK | 20/04/2022 |
Parked on the housing estate and walked through the farm. Sure enough the farmer appeared on his quad bike and gave me the same story. I went up Mynydd y Drum SW top then across to Mynydd y Drum but returned through the woods and the not good stepping stones where I just paddled across. It seems to be still active and the high point is on a ridge of recently moved spoil. I went to the GR given which is presumably considered the natural HP. | clivevilla | 25/03/2021 |
Much as Dusty’s route. With Jemma. | Campbell Singer | 06/09/2020 |
Very different. From the east along good road and track. Through brambles avoiding deep ponds and then a steep climb to a fairly flat featureless top. | Jemma Singer | 06/09/2020 |
Dusty's routed worked perfectly. | jonglew | 20/12/2019 |
A 5 hr walk from our cottage with L on another scorching day to climb this strange grassed overburden hill lurking in the huge blank on the map of the Nant Helen opencast coal mine - where a hole goes down 150 metres to get at 13 seams of high quality anthracite - now now longer in demand given the climate change laws and Aberthaw Power station switching to biomass and less volatile coal ( by ship from abroad!) producing less sulphur and nitrogen oxide. Web says site now mothballed but still seems a fair bit of machinery, trucks and buildings about including a line of 100 tonne dumper trucks. Started walk visiting impressive 80ft Henrydd waterfall then the
unlikely Monkey Sanctuary ( doing a worthwhile job with many horrible backstories for the rescued animals in their care). No sign of row boldly cutting straight up through the blank on the map from N so approached on track from NE under pylons.Easy steep ascent up 3 layers - following a metal drainage chute - small lizard basking | Chris Pearson | 05/08/2018 |
As for Dusty, but didn't access bog to 6' fence, or continue to HP. | arranc | 23/04/2018 |
From se, initially tussocky then grassy line N to Brecon Tramroad, followed this W, rivet benchmark by stile then boggy gate and quad track up SW corner of Wedding Cake, HP towards N edge of rough grassland (SN 81909 10911), or within area to N where the big hole is still being filled (SN 81915 11248 or SN 81954 11181). My guess is that it's being built up to same level as existing, but worth checking with level, I didn't have mine with me. Seemed all quiet on a showery Sunday but didn't attempt to access NE summit, which is still active. | RHW | 12/11/2017 |
Parked at SN84091056. Followed mine road and then track to SN82091028. Followed stream and concrete spill way to water tank compound. Through compound (gaps in fence) and then straight up the three tiers to the top. High point seems to be at SN8200010805. Wondered about a bit but could find no higher points. | Dusty | 27/06/2017 |
