Parked at Caldons, NX396790. Tarmac and forest roads to Glenhead, SUW to NX435790 where an overgrown very faint path, initially through saplings, heads up the E bank of the Shiel Burn, but soon fizzles out in tussocks – least worst going seems to be near the fence – to Nick of the Lochans – Mulldonoch, Nick of the Lochans then a TR around the W flank of Lamachan Hill (traces of path) to Nick of the Brushy – Larg Hill – on to Punch Well Brae, back to Nick of the Brushy – path along N side of wall, then on to Craignaw. A promising path continues from summit WNW until it fizzles out when the veg gets tough – then rough descent down W ridge, via brashings, to join forest road at NX404766. Long drag out along forest roads in big arc to WestIsbjorn29/05/2022
Drove gravel forest road from Auchinleck to junction at NX 442758. Along forest road W, first firebreak R, then steady ascent onto SE ridge of Larg Hill, over the shoulder to Punch Well Brae (a superb vantage point with views to the coasts), then along the ridge to Larg Hill, Lamachan Hill, Scars of Milldown and a surprisingly straighforward ascent of impressive Curleywee, before visiting Brennan Hill and returning W along an old land rover track on the near side of a deer fence, which led back to the forest road. A memorable walk with grandstand views into the Awful Hand range.Nick Down129/05/2022

Adapted route on https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/galloway/lamachan-hill.shtml with alterations to first section to avoid path overgrown with bracken by walking East along Southern Upland way until a new track was found, then when path up right side of Caldons Burn disappeared, branched right up Mulmein Burn initially using convenient track through clearfell, then to col between Lamachan Hill and Larg Hill, then dogleg out to Punch Well Brae. Note very rough on ascent/descent 8hrs for the round.PeteF12/09/2021

Drove forest road to park at its terminus (NX 4317 7393). Good break out to open hill side. Headed south initially for Garlick Hill, then doubled back and up onto Larg Hill before coming across to here. Returned to forest road on an unmapped break starting NX 4297 7479.jonglew13/05/2021

3rd top of 5 on a 19.9km route from Bargrennan to Auchenleck, climbing Rig of the Cairn and Craigmurchie then rough descent East to pick up good track to the forest wall NE of Craigenteasy. I had severe cramp on this ascent so had to stop periodically to yelp with pain. Fairly tussocky ground although clear route. Progress easier once past the forest line. I recorded 662m @ NX 41963 75361 and 663m @ NX 41993 75374. Obvious continuation NE to Larg Hill...Dazingdale25/08/2018
