With GN, biked from Steele Road 531938 to 529949. Walked up west edge of forest on faint paths and to top mainly on faint ATV track. Great view of castle. Huge forestry works. Appearance changing fasttrimarc227/03/2019
Parked by the bridge just off the B 6399 and followed track to just before reservoir and up over grass and reeds. Much better to stay on track passed Roughly, over the Ford and then up hill on easy grassy slopes.Lionel Bidwell25/11/2018
Good parking 100m from access road at 532938. After following old Waverley line and then west and then north on forest road. There is no access from point 534953 due to logging. Follow track SW then head up through mature forest following a westerly route to reach 527953 in open ground. This avoids the worst of the wind blown trees. With CM.bolton11/10/2018
Parked100m from forest entrance at Taylor's Cleuch. with PM (Bolton).CJM11/10/2018
On my way home from extended trip to England and Wales. From due south, up the track then left onto the old railway for a short distance, then up the pasture onto the SW ridge. Strong wind and intermittent hill fog on summit. Descended eastwards down a firebreak into tree strew and debris.Topographer5704/10/2018
Parked at NY529921 (also to bag Larriston Fells). Cycled up minor road through Steele Road and then forest tracks to NY534956, just beyond summit of track. Continued on foot through trees (using access point across track ditch), emerging at top of fire break marked on map from where it is a short walk to the summit.raffemeister16/09/2018
From the Steele Road, forest tracks and firebreak to summit. Returned via trig.NormanW25/04/2018
Dawn raid up before work over Arnton Fell trig first.Tough snow on ridge, fine sunny morningN.Morters09/03/2018
From Will's Bothy at Leysburnfoot, past lots of active fellingColin Crawford22/02/2018
Usual route via the railway bed & Joan's Spring. Back down SW along ridge to trig via P27 Arnton Fell.agentmancuso13/05/2017
Parked at forestry entrance 532938. Up the forestry track to the old railway line, left to the plantation edge, then followed the edge of the plantation all the way to the top. Mostly reasonably good grass with a faint path.Owen B17/04/2017
With Mora. From Steele road bridge. Fire break at ny534956 is usable just a couple of fallen trees at bottom.BLACKHILL31/03/2017
Start point at entrance to forestry track near Taylor's Cleuch on Steele Road (NY 53208 93833) just round corner from start point for Larriston Fell so would have been ideal to do as a separate walk on same day. Walked north up forest track through harvested plantation following it to the right where it picks up dismantled railway bed. Turned left off track at Bught Knowe heading up hill looking for fire break to gain summit ridge. Nothing obvious but found gap in trees more or less where shown on map which leads to forest boundary approx. 400m south of summit. Followed fence to summit where met a farmer on his quad bike who told me summit was at trig on Arnton Fell. Hill-bagging tells me it is not the summit but being so close took the opportunity to bag the trig pillar just over 1 mile to SW along fence from Blackwood Hill summit. Descending from trig pillar to the SE picking up plantation boundary made for a preferred circular walk and return to van.SteveSmith20/01/2017
Across rough pasture and up the side of the wood.hillsman01/08/2016
Parked by bridge next to B6399 and walked up road/track. Took to the hill just before lochan by Roughly. Easy ground to the top.AndrewFinnimore12/07/2016
As Crib Goch below. The key to the firebreak is a little marker which indicates Joan's spring which is 5m inside the forest just after the forest road starts to descend. The ride is 2 lanes to the right. Lovely viewpoint.Thearlaichdubh27/03/2016
Parked at 532938, then took forest roads all the way to bottom of firebreak at 53484,95613 - not obvious at first as the firebreak has almost closed up, but there is a good steep path which brings you out at the fence 300m south of the summit. 4.4 miles, just under two hours there and back.Crib Goch04/12/2015
Same way up and back from car park spot at NY 514932. 30 mins to trig point and another 23 minutes to the summit at edge of wood. Operated SOTA from there - there is a fence to fix the antenna to...G4OBK (Phil)10/10/2015
drove up track to 533954 then firebreak to the top, my 900th marilyn.robertphillips07/06/2015
On way home from Kielder Lake with Brian. Nice jaunt up the ridge past the trig point. Fantastic views. Very strong squalls blowing through with calm sunshine between.Mark T29/05/2015
W Jenx and as Jhimmy. A lot of felling though and on the right/left forest rides 100 yds of fallen trees providing good hard scrambling. From top visited Arnton Hill and trig before quick descent.nordicstar26/10/2013
Solo Uisdean2515/09/2012
Parked to north of bridge over Paddington Syke then walked up to trig and then summit, GR8 views on this warm sunny morning.Dugswell229/09/2011
Parked at small section at NY533938 and went up access road on Mountain bike. Left bike at fire break at NY541958. Then it's up, turn right and up to the top. Easy and no problems.Jhimmy09/04/2011
Parked due S of hill on minor road at junction with forestry track. Short way up track, then L out of forest. Edge of forest to trig on Arnton Fell. Pleasant walk along grassy ridge by side of forest to small cairn.Aye Jimmy19/04/2009
Straightforward ascent in early mist lifting to bright sunshine.JohnW09/09/2003
On the way out from Will's Bothy, up to Arnton Fell alongside the wood and return.Eddie25/01/2003
Did along time ago and can't remember a date besides it being in 2003, perhaps September? Went up by Steele Road (I remember finding out about electric fences here the hard way), briefly to the trig point, up to the top and to Hermitrage after.Kevin2903501/01/2003
By Roughley Burn on concrete road to Shaws. Track uphill to reservoir. Sheep tracks to gate in cross fence and 1/2 mile by fence uphill to top at 15.25.arranc23/07/2000
Enjoyable run to decent summit. B6399 N of Hermitage @ 507960 then E RHW01/05/1999
As Owen B, except stayed on the field side - think it was better terrain. 1 electric fence, single strand (easy) and gates at the top of the hill next to the trig. Then onwards. Cold, calm and good if limited views from summit.iangalbraithblank
