Parked at entrance to track at Rhyd Ddu, followed track through forest and up onto a very pleasant ridge. Came back the ascent route as very scenic and was warned by another hill visitor who had been up there before that the Nuttalls route down the valley that I was going to take past the waterfall would be quite slippy in the frosty conditions. They said it was fine when it was dry. | JulieB | 29/11/2019 |
Very windy. | Dusty | 21/11/2019 |
From Rhyd-Ddu car park, through forest, to summit via Foel Rudd. Back the same way | Dan Baddeley | 07/11/2019 |

From small fishing loch near Rhyd Ddu. Nice ridge, cold wind. | N.Morters | 13/04/2019 |
From Rhyd Ddu CP (£6.00) - visited Y Aran first, then back to CP & on to Mynydd Mawr (via track through forest). Y Aran is an excellent hill with a really good mountain path from the bwlch. | ger | 28/03/2019 |
parked at Rhyd Ddu and followed the slate trail path which was easy to follow out through the wood. once at the first style turn right and the obvious footpath will take you all the way to the summit. due to poor weather we returned the same way. | Aristotle Chip | 01/12/2018 |
Wth Tony, wet and windy. Parked at Snowdon Ranger cp, road walk to Planwydd Farm - up through forest to Foel Rudd then along to summit. Down via path NW to pick up contour path to Cwm Du and through forest to road. Road walk back to cp. (If timetable allows you could take the steam train along this road stretch!) | zoob | 21/10/2018 |
Up SE ridge and down NW. Sat in the wind shelter at the top for a snack. | Claireb | 15/09/2018 |

parked at the end of the quarry road east of Y Fron. Delightful day and spend over two hours on the summit doing SOTA and chatting in Welsh to the former chief national park ranger. | M0YDH | 08/04/2018 |
With family. Standard route from Rhyd-Ddu through forest. Windy lower down but calmer at summit. | benalder284 | 18/10/2017 |
From Rhudd Ddu. Mynydd Mawr, Moel Tryfan and Clogwyngareg. wet and very windy!! | Alunrees33 | 27/09/2017 |
Usual route from Rhyd-ddu but made the mistake of following the Nuttall route down. This was exceedingly rough going and we wasted ages trying to circumvent the crags at the bottom, eventually stumbling through the plantation to gain the lakeside track - horrible. Nice mountain otherwise with great views. | milimana | 16/09/2017 |
Rhedeg fyny a lawr | ger_rob | 07/08/2017 |

Parked at end of road/track SH 520 553 on the east side of Y Fron. Parking for 4 cars - popular with dog walkers. From there 50 minutes to top on clear path, with excellent views of numerous mountains - albeit I had great weather. | garyhoney | 07/05/2017 |
Parked east of Y Fron. Good track/path to the summit. Great views all around. Helped that it was bright sunshine. | wozzat | 07/05/2017 |
Nuttall route up from Rhyd- Ddu. Returned the same way. | crax73 | 29/04/2017 |
Overcast, 9 degrees, cloud dropping to 2250'. Climbed NW from chapel to south. Steep, lots of gorse and electric fences but nice bit of ridge at top with close-up views of impressive south face. Trum y Ddysgl looks higher than it is and mighty impressive. Return same route. 2 hours. | Wycombe Wanderer | 05/04/2017 |
following an ascent of Sentries Ridge | wainwrighteer | 29/08/2016 |
Yr Eliffant as more popularly known, especially to Cofis Dre who look at it on a daily basis | willias | 27/08/2016 |
Climbed by the usual route from Rhyd-ddu - along the forest track then up the ROW and along the E ridge. A great way up a great mountain. With the Hobbses. Clogwynygarreg + Bryn Gwyn on way down. | Mark Jackson | 23/08/2016 |
Hiked on my own from Rhyd Ddu up through the forest to Mynydd Mawr via Foel Rudd and back. Bakingly hot sunny day with lots of flying insects, especially at the summit. Met only 5 other walkers and a runner. | clyoung | 17/08/2016 |
This one beat me Easter 2013 when the snow was frozen and I had no crampons so had to turn back. How different it seemed today! Parked the car at Rhydd Ddu (was going to use the car park but, after the machine swallowed £3 and gave me nothing back, I parked on the main road in the village which has no parking restrictions). Took the path through the forest to GR 561 540 and then a straightforward path to the top. Had a chat with a man at the top who had a half Canadian, half Welsh accent. I think most people probably go back the same way but I dropped down to the col at GR 542 552 and then followed the gully. This was a very hard & slow route and there is no path but there is a bit of a gap in the heather in places and the odd boot print. Towards the bottom, another walker whizzed past me at a rate of knots (serious respect). Following them, I veered away from the stream and ended up in the wood which was very steep above the disused tip. I suspect I should have hugged the South side o | tsharp | 03/06/2016 |
From Rhyd Ddu via the forest- easy to find route and a super stand-alone hill, very enjoyable and my 50th Welsh Marilyn | Cas-gwent | 25/05/2016 |
Up the east ridge in fine conditions but cloud not much higher and 're-covering Snowdon and others after being clear for most of the afternoon. Chill wind but not as strong as expected | vegibagger | 02/05/2016 |
Nuttall completion walk with 9 friends, by the route described in the guidebook. Wet and windy, unfortunately! | davidpettit84 | 01/05/2016 |
Parked at cattle grid (SH 51293 54882)near Y Fron. Pleasant walk up old miners road then easy to follow path up NW flank to summit. Returned down west side over. No path but easy enough and gives chance to visit Bryn Castell. After summit worth short walk SE along summit for excellent views of east end of Nantlle Ridge. | SteveSmith | 23/04/2016 |
Super views, great hill. | nicolajane | 30/09/2015 |
Follow route in Nuttall book. I strongly recommend not using their suggested descent and using ascent route both ways. | lenman | 30/08/2015 |

from Rhydd DDu carpark. Overcast. 20th and last of trip. Pleasant | Thearlaichdubh | 27/06/2015 |
With Jenx. Parked just up from Rhyd-dhu and off Nantle road. Track into forest can be driven to gate. Follow track till meets FP coming up and leads to fence line. Easy after that just 400m steep climbing. Made top in an hour. Same way back with good if cloudy views to Nantle ridge. | nordicstar | 25/06/2015 |
As part of the RCSL Snowdonia Challenge. | matthewgibbs | 06/06/2015 |
A slightly cloudy/rainy ascent, firstly over Foel Rudd and then onto the summit along the ridgeline. The weather cleared as descended towards and then through the slate working around Moel Tryfan. We returned past Llyn Nantlle Uchaf and through the valley back to the Snowdon Inn Campsite. | Ginger Dave | 24/05/2015 |

On own. Parked at Llyn y Dywarchen then up and over Bryn Gwyn and Clogwyngarreg (a cracking precipitous little mound) before heading for Mynydd Mawr. Hellish windy on the top of Mynydd Mawr. Same way back circling west of the two tumps. | Crib Goch | 15/10/2014 |
Walk with friend from the south, good visibility but increasing cloud cover. Stunning viewpoint. The Bronze Age summit cairn is completely trashed, but the one of the subsidiary summit, poised above the valley, is better. Difficult descent using Nuttals route, path is very slippy. | thesweetcheat | 13/09/2014 |

A MISTY AND DRIZZLY DAY WITH MORE RAIN FORECAST FOR LATER SO DID A QUICK UP AND BACK ON MYNYDD MAWR FROM RHYD DDU WITH JOYCE AND PAT. RAINED HARD ON WAY DOWN AND FEET VERY WET FROM LONG GRASS. HAD DELICIOUS SNACK IN DUTCH CAFE IN RHYD DDU. | BURGESS | 14/08/2013 |
A lovely walk upto this. Dreadful heather and rock and bilberry streamway to get back down. Lots of bits of WW2 aircraft wreck in stream. Rather a challenge getting down past cliffs to the lake at the end. | skeletonjo | 23/07/2013 |
Quite a steep old slog up from Rhyd Ddu but great views both on the way up and from the top. I followed the Nuttall's suggestion to head down NE and then E. It was steep and much of it through pathless heather - not fun. | clivevilla | 06/07/2013 |
Eay walk in overcast conditions. Great views in all directions. | denisB52 | 16/06/2013 |

same route as oterh walker - lovely views from the top - much better than quite a few higher tops | gigglejon | 18/04/2007 |
Starting from the village of Rhyd-Ddu, the forest road continues for a mile or so without climbing, then a footpath ascends through the trees and the forest edge is followed towards the slopes of Foel Rudd. The climb to this subsidiary top is the hardest part of the walk, but the views were the best of the day, down to Llyn y Dywarchen to the south and Llyn Cwellyn to the east. On the other side of the latter the zig-zags at the start of the Snowdon Ranger could clearly be seen, though Snowdon was deep in cloud. The mist occasionally lifted from some of the summits of the Nantlle Ridge but never from Mynydd Mawr. After Craig y Bera there was nothing but cloud. | peter4lc | 20/10/2006 |

From Snowdon Ranger, lakeside, forest with goldcrests everywhere. We went up Cwm Planwydd- my notes include 'views of impressive overhanging crags', 'made clear that it is a trespass', 'rough to ridge but little paths help'. A hail-shower cleared the air and the views were stunningly clear. Returned by standard route via Bwlch y Moch, diverting to the top of the magnificent crumbling cliffs of Craig y Bere.
