Parked up on the top of the pass, awful weather conditions today. Very boggy walk upto Llechwedd Du, turn left when the fencing goes right. My advice go in winter when its frozen or in the summer months.Buckleymon02/02/2023
Nuttall walk 8.2. Didn't see a soul all day on the hills. Good views all day particularly from the Bwlch Sirddyn valley.simocity16/09/2022
Bit of a slog though and round peat Hags bluffs & troughs n bog. But simple great hillside up the final 90 metres to Marilyn.vegibagger10/06/2022

Across from Foel Hafod-fynydd. Onwards to Esgeiriau Gwynion.Minto24/05/2022
A cloudy mizzly day that meant some route finding issues across initial stretch of boggy ground.. As a result missed Llechwedd Du on way out and picked it up on way back. So first top was Esgeiriau Gwynion by which time coud had cleared so easily over to Foel Hafod-fynydd and back to pick up the missed top. Though clear now missed the best line back and finished a couple of hundred yards south on the road.dickscroop04/11/2021
Nuttall Walk 8.2, Eastern Arans from Bwlch Y Groes (913233), including Llechwedd Du, Foel Rhudd, Esgeiriau Gwynion, Foel Hafod-fynydd and Moel y Cerrig Duon. Also Foel y Groes. Beautiful autumn sunshine, didn't see a soul.Lazylizzie10/10/2021

From 545 car park en route to Aran ridge. Bog was dry thank goodness.Campbell Singer23/06/2021
Llechwedd Du and Foel Hafod-Fynydd - Aran from Bwlch y Groes. Followed fence from Bwlch y Groes over the horror-show bog of Clipiau Duon (you could spend forever trying to go around and jumping over bogs but it’s probably easier to just follow the fence and using it as a handrail - some old fence posts used as stepping stones). Descended steeply and directly W to stream and fence junction, stream jumpable a couple of days after significant rain, along fence steeply again to summit of Foel Hafid-Fynydd. 5 minute wait for the amazing sunrise then returned to stream and took track S/SE to road at spot height 207 (Blaen Pennant) then a slog up the icy road to Bwlch y Groes as I couldn’t face that bog again. First frost and snowfall of the season.jacobrichmond04/11/2020
As per Nuttalls from Bwlch-y-Groes, following left side of fence. As I found on the return, the other side of the fence is better. en route to Esgeiriau Gwynion.IanHHill11/10/2020
On return to car park after Esgeiriau Gwynion.NormanW12/09/2020
Parked at Bwlch v Groes car park. Llechwedd Du, straight over to Feel Hafod-fynydd, Esgeiriau Gwynion, Foel Rhudd, Foel y Groes and Moel y Cerrig Duon. Only problem was the friendly cattle that arrived at the car park while I was walking, had a dump on a wheel and had been rubbing themselves on the side of my car!CJM08/09/2020

A nine and half mile walk following Nuttall's route but first doing the out and back for Moel y Cerrig Duon and then over to Llechwedd Du, Foel Rhudd, Esgeriau Gwynion and Foael Hafod-fynydd. The climb up to the last top is very steep but is only around 400 meters and the climb up the road back to the car park was a sting in the tail too.WAYNE ROWLETT30/06/2019
From Bwlch y Groes - surprisingly dry underfoot. Maisie wore her wellies anyway. Weather was overcast & cold - nothing like the day before.DanMaisieBex23/06/2019
10 mile walk from Cwm Croes, up Tir Gofal path from Nant-Y-Llyn farm to Llyn Lliwbran then climbed NW steeply onto the ridge, followed ridge onto Aran Benllyn, Erw Y Ddafad-Ddu and Aran Fawddwy (all bagged previously in 2011) then retraced steps to Erw Y Ddafad-Ddu and descended to Creiglyn Dyfi tarn, up easily onto Foel Hafod-Fynydd then diagonally onto Llechwedd Du, along ridge to Esgeiriau Gwynion, descended to Llechwedd Llyfn, then steep descent back to car in Cwm Croes, perfect sunny/breezy weather, good dry terrain, views from west Coast including the whole of Cardigan Bay to Shropshire. Saw 2 people all day. Later that day drove up to Bwlch Y Groes pass and bagged Foel Y Groes and Moel Y Cerrig Duon, great day.DanTrig15/05/2019
The five eastern Arans from Bwlch y Groes. Started with Moel y Cerrig Duan then back to the Bwlch and on to Llechwedd Du, Esgeiriau Gwynian, Foel Rhudd and finishing on the best of these tops, Foel Hafod-Fynydd.knarf14/12/2018

As part of Nuttall walk 8.2, with Penda. 4.75 hrs, cool with spots of rain. Shepherds were gathering all sheep off these hills with their collies, very impressive.beorwulf07/07/2017
More or less did section 8.2 from the Nuttalls book with the exception of the North face of Foel Hafod-fynydd which had a lot of snow on it so I skirted East and went up the Western ridge which was relatively snow free and not as steep. Started off from Bwlch y Groes which is apparently the highest pass in North Wales and it's worth coming up here just for the drive! It was very wet and swampy with lots of groughs and wetness on the way up to Llechwedd Du. After that it was a short hop up to Foel Rhudd and an even shorter hop to Esgeiriau Gwynion. Tied the backpack to a fence on the way up to Foel Hafod-fynydd and picked it up on the way back down. The views at the top were absolutely superb: Aran Fawddwy was sprinkled with snow and looked gorgeous with Creiglyn Dyfi at the bottom. The grassy track (presumably there used to be a quarry up here) was a delightful route down as I no longer had to watch my feet and could admire the delightful waterfalls below instead. The only downside otsharp23/03/2017

Another beautiful day in the Arans - with no one else in sight until I neared the top of the pass on the return, to meet a couple of Dutch cyclists struggling valiantly up the other side. The aptly named Llaethnant, and views down into the Dyfi valley were amazing.ruthatlast06/08/2013

As part of the Nuttall route from Bwlch y Groes. Perfect day for this - frozen ground meant there was no bog trotting and there were great views of the snow-covered Aran ridge all the way.woodse13/02/2010
From Arans Ridge starting at Lake Bala. Crossed to Bwlch y Groes. Preferred the rocky Arans to bog trotting, which was tedious.emily26/09/2009

Tried to get to Bwlch y Groes car park but the snow on the road meant I had to park some 300m short. It was still a hard walk even though some of the bog was frozen. I found plodding through snow was equally as difficult to bog trotting.Father Ted06/12/2008

The drawback with completing a list such as the Welsh 2,000s is that there will be mountains you would rather not climb, but you have to do it all the same. This was the case with Llechwedd Du. The ascent from Bwlch y Groes was little more than 200 feet and I barely noticed any climb at all. Every few minutes a peat bog had to be crossed, and it took over an hour to walk a mile. This felt less a mountain than any of the other 110 I had climbed so far. The summit, such as it was, was above the lip of yet another bog and was marked by a handful of quartz rocks. I have a feeling that this will be the first and last time I visit this hill.peter4lc22/04/2006

Last wearisome peak of a long south -north Arans traverse carrying a big pack, through the heather. Bala still seemed a mighty long way away. Decided to head for the lonely road to try to hitch -took an age to reach winding around peat hags and through bogs. Once there it seemed like I had more chance of a space ship landing than a car coming -however after walking downhill for 2 miles I passed a parked car with a couple admiring the view who happily gave me a lift all the way to Bala, whilst I shared the back seat with Lady (a dog).Chris Pearson11/06/1984
