The Celtic Rainforest lived up to its name this week. After another wet morning we drove to the RSPB car park through some shallow flood water and walked along the boardwalk to gain the E ridge- a broad slope then a thin trodden path led us onto the ridge; though not exposed, the sides are very steep and rough so the path was useful. Beautiful views from the rough, open top in clear weather. Then we returned back carefully down the slippery steep slopes. The understory is mossy and mostly open, delightful underfoot in one of the finest examples of mature sessile oak forest. Finished with our snack at a bench by the Towy in spate- an impressive wild scene. With Pete. Too late for Pied Flycatchers but Nuthatches in good voice. | pwheeler | 20/09/2023 |
As PGCE. From RSPB car park at SN 7878 4710, along boardwalk, turned left for about 100m & up E. ridge through open oak woodland to the heather-topped summit mound. Also visited a couple of rock outcrops NW of summit. Fine looking hill in a lovely area. (S) | gerrybowes | 14/01/2022 |
Parked in RSPB car park to NE. Followed boardwalk, then left for about 100m before going up E ridge through lovely oak woodland. Enjoyable. | PGCE | 10/08/2021 |
Located within the RSPB reserve- free parking. Took the path to the Twm Sion Cati's cave followed by steep ascent through oak woodland interspersed with rock ribs to rocky rib above treeline with heather/ grass. Descended eastern ridge to perimeter path- an easier route. Pied flycatchers seen in delightful lush and open woods. | Denise | 11/06/2021 |
As others have noted, a great little hill with delightful oak woods and river gorge. Finding ourselves in the cave we attempt to gain height via the polished slab and vegetated cleft from the back of the cave. No doubt possible in dry conditions our attempts are spurned and we opt for the easier route of vegetated ledges on the N side of the cave entrance. Once above the rock band easily to the summit. Descend on path down the E shoulder. Pied Flycatchers in woods. | RichardM | 11/06/2021 |
A delightful climb - one of the most rewarding little walks I've done when combined with the Gwenffrwd - Dinas bird reserve, Twm Sion Cati's cave and a cycle around Llyn Brianne. Bendigedig! ~ Wonderful! I climbed the western shoulder and descended the east ridge, following the circumnavigation path. | Rob Rees | 10/04/2019 |
Parked at 7838 4666, through gate, briefly on track then straight up through easy woodland. As it gets steeper a path appears which goes almost to the top. No crags or difficulties. | clivevilla | 02/01/2019 |
Direct from SN 786 467. Bracken belt then steep grass to trod from SN 7838 46666. No crags. heather summit | carole engel | 09/10/2018 |
Zig-zagged up from S side avoiding brambles. Nice spot on the tops. | Eddie | 11/09/2018 |
With K and RM. Ascended to right of cave before breakfast. Tricky. | Ashley | 30/05/2016 |
Parked at SN782463. I started off heading straight up but crags forced a clockwise rising traverse which took me around the back and onto easier ground. I counted five possible summits. | Chris Peart | 29/04/2016 |
What this hill lacks in altitude it makes up for in attitude. Started at small car park at south east end and walked for about 400ms in a clockwise direction. Then steeply upwards through break in crags onto narrow ridge and then up slippy slopes. Great summit. Had to be very careful on way down due to tree roots, wet leaves, slippy rock and loose moss. | Campbell Singer | 03/01/2016 |
1/4 First of few but tough hills day Dinas/Cnapyn Melyn/Pen Crag Alltyberau/Esgair Fraith | Fergalh | 07/11/2015 |
From RSPB car park, board walk to where it meets circular RoW shown on OS 1:25k map. Then followed faint track almost directly to summit. Far easier bag than anticipated with thick fern encountered only for last 20m. With Mrs G and Dusty. | jonglew | 07/09/2014 |
Followed path to W of summit. Then small path off - not much use. DIY to summit. No need to go near any rocky crags. 4 or 5 contenders for summit within 70m. | destaylor | 25/05/2012 |
A fun hill with a variety of choice of routes through the bracken and rocks. | Martin R | 04/08/2011 |
A rocky horror.Parked at RSPB cp and took anticlockwise path around hill. At 65mins post, a path goes uphill and stairs take you into a cave. Doh! Back down stairs and skirt rocks on west side up a steep wooded slope to summit area with variety of tops. | chriswatson | 09/11/2010 |
From SN 782 463 | summitsup | 26/09/2009 |
