1/5. As others parked off a bend just before Penydarren to the SW. Followed path into woods and took an unmarked path NE upwards to meet the woodland/moor boundary fence. Slack bwf to cross and short steep up to the 324m spot height on the ridge. Plenty of paths along the top, visited old and new hp. Returned to col between the old and new and a direct descent to the woodland track below, with a stile over the fence. Somewhat of a thrash - the ascent route much preferred. Solo. | richard69 | 30/11/2023 |
Parked at entrance to Allt y grug woodland track 763816, approach road horrible and full of huge pot holes, easy walk up gravel track, hairpin left with slight cut across shortcut, 200m to right uphill branch off path, over style, into forest, eventually take right turn, steep to top, back across ridge to Xmas tree and down not as steep to picnic area and return | Tribal2er | 02/02/2023 |
A revisit following my failure to visit the NE summit in 2020, and quite pleased to follow a path all the way to the summit. Parked at approx. SN742073 as others, and followed the ROW till approx. WNW of the summit, from whence a mountain bike path climbed SE, incredibly steep at first before leaving the forest and climbing in a pleasant series of eroded zigzags up the still-steep bank to the summit. | Mark Jackson | 29/10/2022 |
Parked at a small layby / parking area at SN 7413 0741 just before Penydarren to the SW of the summit. Along footpath through the forest & then R fork at the first track junction & up towards the SW ridge. One BWF to cross then steeply up to the ridge which we followed to the summit. Good views of the Black Mountain. | DanMaisieBex | 11/09/2022 |
5.5 mile run from houses on PenCwmdu road at 739063 .. up lane and mix of forest and MTB tracks via small pond the to top (OS shows 2 spot heights of 338 so did both) then descend NE to pick up forest track to the permissive track at 738076 and back to start | milejunkie | 07/06/2022 |
Parked in housing estate to South West. | Stevooo | 07/01/2022 |
Parked Ystalyfera, on street parking east end of Brynygrug (street name). R.o.w. through farm at 756087, round the perimeter of the woods and onto hill. Both tops for safety. | iangalbraith | 20/10/2021 |
3rd out of 4 Marilyn's and 1 Hewitt for the day. With KeithByTheC. Parked just past where footpath enters Wood at 742073. Followed footpath through wood.Starts off a bit muddy then turns into a good track, took forestry track not on map that headed up hill in direction of summit. Led to a hole in the wall and bwf fence easy to cross. Headed directly up hill (short steep bit) to the old summit from here. Various new forestry tracks on the ridge. Cut down to col between old and new summit and up one of new tracks to new summit. Returned the same route. 2.25 miles round trip. 1hr walking time. | JulieB | 07/10/2021 |
From S. Off road parking just round corner from RoW into the woods at 743074. Followed RoW to 744077. Track not on map rises east to edge of plantation. Slack barbed wire fence leads on to initially steep ascent through heather. Then grassy tracks to tops | KeithByTheC | 07/10/2021 |
Parked at SN742073 - room for one car by gate. Followed footpath and tracks to top. | Ramblingpaul | 20/09/2020 |
Re-visit for new summit. | andrew brown | 18/09/2020 |
From small parking at bend just before Penydarren. Up path/track to reach felled area. At large bowl several tracks split off. Took the left edge of bowl which picks up a wall higher up and meets the wall/fence onto open hill. Both summits visited. 2/7 Marilyn | N.Morters | 25/07/2020 |
Muddy parking at path start 742073. Found a faint track up through cleared woodland, crossing a couple of land rover tracks. After the summit also visited the top to the NE which was 3m lower but a better view and no e rocks to sit on. | NormanW | 26/02/2020 |
Cilmaengwyn - Mynydd Allt-y-grug - Mynydd Uchaf East Top - Mynydd Uchaf - Bryn Mawr - Bancbryn - Mynydd y Betws - Ammanford. Foolishly only visited the SW summit. | Mark Jackson | 22/02/2020 |
From garage in Cilmaengwyn where I had dropped off Peugeot for repair. Approaching from S along edge of plantation, thick veg on base of hill even at this time of year made hard going. S summit at 10.35, N summit 10.40. Nice zig zag footpath off N summit down steep W side into woods and onward west. | richardrosser | 08/02/2020 |
5/6 From S, through forestry (mostly felled). Quite a nice hill. | Rounsfell | 08/02/2020 |
From Graig Arw direct ascent from the SE, then on to Taren y Gigfran, before decending by same route. Lots of vegetation to negociate. | Winterfloodian | 02/05/2019 |
Linda | Glenford | 20/04/2019 |
From SN 742073 - one tiny parking place. Along path and forest track to SN 749081, then zig-zagged up rough pathless NW flank to grassy final incline to the top | Isbjorn | 14/11/2018 |
From the SW on path starting at road bend from Penydarren. An unmarked track branches slightly right up towards a barbed fence, scaled at its HP. | Topographer57 | 29/09/2018 |
Parked just beyond path. Out onto open hillside where much felling has taken place and from track junction headed upwards over fence and up to twin topped summit. Area with lots of ATV tracks and ponies. SW top was slightly higher. | PeterD | 10/06/2018 |
4/6 Marilyn day. The ascent of Mynydd Allt-y-grug (338) from the bend above Penydarren Farm. Through the wood and on the ridge. A round trip of 4km in 1 hour. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 13/05/2018 |
From minor road to SW. Better to drive past start of track on bend and park in much larger area just further on. Starting N on wet forest path, when clear fell area reached went SE on logging vehicle tracks to fence, then NE alongside this, steeply at first. At high point, track heads east, then fades, but easy to SW summit, and then NE once. Returned to track at fence, but followed the track W to bend, then down a bike trail. Do they really ride down there? Mad! | Minto | 11/04/2018 |
A nice enough walk from the small car park E of Penydarren. Along the footpath to join a logging road, then R at a junction onto an unmapped track that curves up and round to the fence at the top of the forestry. Hop over the fence at the high point, and wander up the hill. Good views. | Gill | 22/02/2018 |
From bough point on road to the north muddy before the gate. Through the very muddy farm yard and up through open one woodland on to plateau to the twin tops | vegibagger | 02/01/2018 |
7/8M parked at gates sw along road then up path through woods track to wall then up to tops. | robertphillips | 10/11/2017 |
With: hb; Parked at SN762081. Followed steep Ln up then path from 762081. Heavily overgrown with bramble and juniper but we subdued it. Path much easier from Penlan Fach to summit. Land-rover driving on top. Returned by easier route from farm. | Ian Baines | 19/08/2017 |
With: ib; | Helen Baines | 19/08/2017 |
We parked at the side of a residential street at SN762082 and walked up the steep, narrow road above to get onto the hillside. We had intended to take the footpath heading south west at SN762085, but that is totally overgrown, so continued up the road to make a sharp zigzag through a beautiful oak wood to reach Penlan fach. We made our way out onto open access land and found that there were loads of 4x4 tracks which were very helpful in reaching the summit. We did both 338m spot heights just to be sure. There were also loads of blaeberries up there. Lovely hill with great views, but one to do in summer. It would be incredibly wet and muddy in the winter. With Keith and wee Ross. | islamidget | 17/07/2017 |
Parked 764086. Walked down the road, through houses, turned left up hill and found footpath through farm, green gate in the woods leading to main road, straight walk left down road and up on to quad bike tracks. Great views from the top. | Hippy77 | 11/02/2017 |
Took lane to woods above Cilmaengwyn Uchaf. Path into the trees is not gated so no issue with blocking access. A tad muddy but soon dried out as the climb started..then into a clear fell quagmire. An unmarked track leads to an old wall junction at 746077- It's ruddy muddy but a good short cut. Over 1 b/wire fence and up rough steep grass passing some nicely weathered outcrops. Summit yields some lovely views. | stig_nest | 14/12/2016 |
Used the parking and route described by SteveSmith and it worked very well. The last bit of the footpath before exiting the woods was pretty boggy and rutted but apart from that all was well. Continued S along the ridge after the summit before dropping down into the forest again and picking up a good track. A nice hill. | Father Ted | 09/11/2016 |
Best of 7 Marylins climbed today from Penydarren forest track. Steep climb to the top, on mountain bike track past abandoned car. Nice views to Brecon Beacons. | twg27 | 27/06/2016 |
Via penlan Fach farmstead again made this a tougher walk than it needed be walked along a footpath via the edge of the woods which was very boggy visited both summit and alternative summit | hodder | 02/06/2016 |
An A to Z needed to find the start- Bryn-y-grug (just above the telephone box- top of housing estate). Good little walk, out by Gilfach-yr-haidd road, back via Penlan-fach. The two heathery tops- I included Tarren y Gigfran- were pleasant and made easy by the many 4WD tracks, though it would be miserable if the petrolheads were in action on the hill. Wildness trying to reclaim the hill in a pair of nesting Ravens. Huge snow showers around, but sunshine here and high Brecon Beacons clear of cloud. My 3rd Ma of the day. | pwheeler | 26/04/2016 |
Parked on grassy area away from field entrance just past footpath (SN 7422407366). Walked back along road turning right on fp following into woods as it becomes a wide forest track. Stayed with track passing summit to the south then looping back approaching summit area along unmarked track from the NE. Summit area fairly flat but high point marked by a small pile of stones next to a broken flat stone. Continued over summit picking up another quad bike track that led to a gap in wall and onto a track descending to the initial track and back to the car. | mntainman | 14/04/2016 |
Parked to SW where track meets road- one car space- and followed forest tracks to open land, then across hillside to the top. Shortcut return through forest proved a poor choice due to inpenetrable brambles, best stick to the tracks! | Cas-gwent | 15/03/2016 |
From nr road end to SW. Parking for one car at gate, more just down the road. Up the path to join a road end, immediately to right another path heads directly up the hill away from you. Took this and followed to forest edge and newish fence. Heather burned away by fire. Couple of tops either side of teh GR top visited. Best of the day. | nordicstar | 20/02/2016 |
Very wet through the woods. Found a very useful trail heading off main track at high point. | jenx | 20/02/2016 |
Space for a car or two at SN 734073. Then walked a 70 yards or so back down the road and took the waymarked track through the forest. At circa SN 743077 a path leads diagonally uphill where a fence needs to be crossed. Steep final push to summit. Returned via same route. | bowlesy | 10/10/2015 |
3/6 Walked up through forest track until reached large circle in path took steepest path which led to final ridge. Poured rain at top so saw nothing | Fergalh | 01/08/2015 |
Parked at Ystalyfera and after battling around the farm we eventually located a track to the summit. Easy descending as we followed the edge of the trees to the gravel road. 85 minutes with GB. | bolton | 28/07/2015 |
Parked at junction of minor roads in Ystalyfera at SN76280 08543 – Up to end of road & then up waymarked path through woods to track – Followed track to farm at 759085 & then through gate & up path to edge of forest – Along edge of forest & then along track up NE ridge to summit & alternative summit. (PM) | gerrybowes | 28/07/2015 |
Drove up Penywern Road to start of footpath heading west.Room to park. Followed footpaths to Ty Gwyn, Pant-y-gwanyd, and Penlan-fach. Followed footpaths around east side of woods then west into woods. Headed south where path turns to right and onto open hillside. Tracks lead to the summit. Easier way down following ridge NE then alongside woods to regain outward route. 2 spot heights on map with same height so did both. | mike.hoult | 18/07/2015 |
Allt y Crug, Mynydd Uchaf East Point, Mynydd Uchaf, Cefn Gwrhyd and Cefnllan as round walk from Ynysmeudy | underhill | 12/07/2015 |
Parking at 7421007360, to ROW into woods as far as the forest road, then rising track slightly north of east (not on 25K) which joins the fence reaches open ground at 7466307750. then on to summit. | tim747 | 08/07/2015 |
From Cilmaengwyn, followed minor road, forest path then open hill. | rhalstead | 06/04/2015 |
From a parking spot south east of Penydarren SN 742073. Woodland path, hairpin right to a hole in the fence at SN 74600760. Tracks and paths then to the highest point. | G4OBK (Phil) | 23/01/2015 |
From cafe and car park to NE. Dont go to south end of hill to find way in, go to north side. | dicky | 31/05/2014 |
Parking at stone quarry (SN 7343 0916) near Cefn Gwrhyd tump (visited first). S to Penydarren then up onto Allt-y-grug. Whole summit area seems to be a 4x4 playgound, none here today. Clear summit point. Continued NE over 338m spot height, dropping down to meet a mapped track at SN 7540 0842 thereafter mapped tracks back to start for a 10.6km round. | jonglew | 26/04/2014 |
Parked in Ystalyfera and followed tracks to corner of wood, then 4x4 tracks to summit. | Lionel Bidwell | 25/04/2014 |
Suggest you don't approach from South West. Lots of brambles and gorse, and no real paths. Stunning views all round though. | huwthomas | 18/04/2014 |
Hill destroyed by 4x4 off road vehicles. | Dusty | 30/03/2014 |
Cycled up 1:4 from Ystalyfera, path then trods to the summit. | Eddie | 09/07/2013 |
From Cwn Du to the sw. There is an estate which is tricky to find your way through. I parked by the last estate house and walked up the road and forestry path (boggy). I kept going past (forking right a couple of times) the hill and came out north of it w | clivevilla | 16/11/2011 |
Easy from Ystalyfera to NE on footpaths and dirt tracks on a lovely summer morning. | Dugswell2 | 02/07/2011 |
Very hard to navigate/park amongst all the lanes to the southeast. The forest road approaching from the north looks simpler. | nddavies | 01/06/2010 |
Start 9:30 at 743073.No access notices so followe FP to end of ridge and up out of sight of farm. Tracks and signs of earth-moving on top. No TP. 2 tops at far end seemed same height. Back same route to car 10:55. Weather fair. | dbb | 26/03/2010 |
From SW up track which becomes big track, followed until roughly opposite summit. Then steep ascent through bush, bilberry and heather. | Aye Jimmy | 04/05/2009 |
Solo | 1921 | 20/11/2008 |
Not a stroll. From SW follow forest track/stream. (There is a smaller better path immediately to the left of the mattress.) Top 300m very hard - heather blue berries steep. | destaylor | 08/09/2008 |
Just a pleasant Billberry top - no stones or posts. Approach from SN 743071 NOT recommended - a real struggle uphill through bracken etc.
Tried woods back but ended surrounded by brambles and scrub - my worst experience on a Marilyn! | signyred | 18/07/2006 |
approach from Ystalyfera. | Adrian | 16/04/2006 |

One of 5 marilyns in a day
We parked up in Ystaleyfera and up a path to the woods - we followed the ridge and reached the top. | ChinnockC | 12/04/2002 |
7 marilyn day with Darren. The narrow alleys have a lot of detail(buildings etc) to cram int a small space on the map which makes finding the start of f'paths tricky. | Chris Pearson | 23/04/2000 |
Sign pointed into distance, across field with bullocks to clamber steeply up on deep heather. A very long mile over deep virgin heather. No birds and occasional 1' high fir trees. Domey top - no cairn. | arranc | 03/05/1999 |
OK summit & view. from road @ 743072, cross damp pasture, steep pull then fp thru heather to summit | RHW | 20/12/1998 |
