Parked on carpark at Clapham Terrace, Forge Side (SO 245 084). Up to end of track past Rugby pitch, then on a bearing to the Upper Mine (SO 235 081). Followed fence and across moor to summit. | JGC | 11/04/2024 |
With Jon, Alex and Paul. Parked at Big Pit, tried and failed to find the alleged path to the WSW of the boundary fence, so endured a tussocky bogtrot up the slope, which led to complaints. If you do this hill, I strongly recommend you take the path that runs up the side of the rugby pitch to the east, which does exist as we descended that way. On the plus side, there were excellent views from the top. | Richard | 29/03/2024 |

Cefn Coch-Coety Mountain-Coety Mountain Boundary-Gwastad-Mynydd James-Mulfran from north. Couldn't say much about first 3 as visibility down to about 30m which made things interesting. Happily cleared for middle part of day. | TK | 09/03/2024 |
1/5. Parked near the Big Pit car park in a small area (free) reserved for walkers. Followed the nearby Coity Tips Trail for about 150m before turning L and following the Big Pit boundary fence WSW out onto the open moorland. A small trod continues and joins the old tarmac access road to the upper mine. Turned L here and shortly afterwards R up a steep slope, having passed some crags, onto the top. Wandered around the tussocks and heather for a while looking for the hp. Wonderful sunny morning. Returned the same way. Solo. Thanks to Isbjorn below for the suggested approach. | richard69 | 28/11/2023 |
After Mynydd Carn-y-Cefn, climbed up from Blaina via head of Tillery Valley, then returned to Winchelstown via flank of Cefn Coch and Mulfran. Top has no marker, but looks slightly higher than rest of summit area. Long walk! | IanHHill | 15/09/2023 |

Parked at Big Pit mining museum car park, paid for parking but probably could have parked on the road, walk past front of museum and towards town, finally found the path running behind rugby pitch, Up past farm buildings and up to top, then down interesting big hole/mounds then down to abandoned farm buildings for a little explore and return | Tribal2er | 03/07/2022 |

With KeithByTheC. 12.8 mile circuit from Abertillary.
Abertillary, Coety Mountain, Cefn Goch (Tump), Cwm Celyn, Mynydd Carn-y-cefn all the way along the ridge to entrance of wood at 203048, then down through wood to Abertillary. | JulieB | 25/03/2022 |

Circular walk from Blaenavon, fine weather, good walking on paths but off paths is very slow in heather and long grass. Lovely taste of the Welsh countryside. | JazDisney | 16/01/2022 |

From the confusing and hiddeous mess of roads, buildings and fences that is Big Pit, but really easy peasy to get started. 3-4 free parking spaces set aside for walkers just below Big Pit CP barrier SO2381308957. From these CP places TR N (right), level, past the 'rusty miner' for a few metres to display board, then use adjacent kissing gate on L to start clockwise around Coity Tips Trail. After about 100m at 1st big RH bend and double gates, an unlikely looking tiny path goes straight ahead along outside edge of fence (on your L) and over a stile onto the common land (less than 150m from the CP). Small path, wet at first, leads directly up to old horizontal mine track and, just above that, a tarmac track ascending R to L leads up to a hidden very large metal shed. From E end of this metal shed an obvious scar leads up to a capacious gap in the skyline fence, from where several An Tx lead on, but peter out, in the mass of rough heather. A very direct route. | Isbjorn | 15/04/2021 |
Parked in Whistle Road car park. Tracks to old mine, then straight up to Coety Mountain. Onward to Gwastad and back to Cefn Coch. Direct return from Cefn Coch. | PGCE | 30/03/2021 |

From Big Pit, dull summit area but loved the mine, closed due to Covid | N.Morters | 24/08/2020 |
Bit of a disappointment for a significant hill top like this. Imagine on a fine day the views would more than make up for a somewhat dull walk in. | Alex C | 15/08/2020 |
3/6 Dewey day. From the end of the small road near the pub at Whistle Halt. Up FP to ridge, then north to Cefn Coch and back to path. Then along rough off road vehicle track along west side of Coity Mountain and up to near summit of Gwastad. Short navigation through heather.
Back track to due west of Coity Mtn summit, then short cross country to the top. Descent to mine road and back to Whistle Halt. (S) | silveracorn_alan | 21/07/2020 |

From NE. Looked for path along RoW from south corner of Big Pit compound but found only long grass. Animal tracks up shorter grass higher up but featureless summit is defended by tussocks on all sides. | Topographer57 | 04/09/2019 |
With E. Parked at Big Pit Mining Museum. There is a small area on access road marked for walkers as Museum car parks close at 17:30 with locked barriers. Walked around S side of museum buildings along access road then footpath onto open land. Once past path and stile beside museum, waist high in bracken up to access track from largest of the old quarries along hillside. Impossible to locate track up hillside nor smaller path further N. Hillside covered in man (and woman) eating bracken. Continued along access track N until reached track crossroads running N - S. Turned S up steeply rising track above quarry until ground levels out just before lone wind turbine. Then a slog over tussocky grass to summit which is a grassy rise clearly visible from surrounding terrain. Continued N to bag Coety Mountain Boundary another 200 metres further on. No feature only more tussocky grass. Rather than retrace steps, continued N to unmarked path which meandered down to Forge Side. | Beeliner | 14/07/2019 |
1/7 Parked on lane to east, first county top of the day walking through slightly damp tussocks, mostly easy. Hill summed up by burnt out car on way up. | penbet | 15/06/2019 |

Brilliant clear cold snowy day. Couldn't find the obvious paths marked on the OS 1:25k map, so spent some time traversing very boggy ground - lucky it was frozen! | Speleoprez | 30/01/2019 |

From Big pit walkers CP which is further up the road on the left past the bus CP. ROW then up past the quarry and onto summit with elizyanne. | GmacT | 16/07/2018 |
Finding the initial path through the tussocks was challenging and then used what would have been the tram line. Chatted to a biker that cycles everyday and wants to reach the top of the track in one go. Not today!Headed straight up the side of the quarry to the top. | elizyanne | 16/07/2018 |
Coety Mountain, Coety Boundary Top and Gwastard ( careful how you say that one), with Scout from Big Pit car park; hard walking underfoot at times. Dry weather. | Lou | 12/05/2018 |
3/4 Marilyn day. From the end of the small road near the pub at Whistle Halt. Up FP to ridge. Then along rough off road vehicle track along west side of Coity Mountain, before heading up to the summit. Descent to mine road above Blaenavon and back to Whistle Halt. 5.6km in 1h25m. From SO238089 - the walkers CP at Big Pit. Not the most inspired choice of ascent for hip replacement rehab. Also visited the nearby poss HP alternative to make sure. | summitsup | 06/04/2018 |
A nice walk, once above the bogs. Choose a dry frosty day for this one. I parked at Forge Side; just follow the signs to FS, and you come to a surprising car park below some sheds, right by the start of the footpath up the hill. FP heads SE across pony fields, very wet near the feeders, then joins a bridleway heading W. Very wet in places, but the worst can be dodged easily. Improves to very good path by the ruin. When it crosses the high track which contours the hillside, just go straight up the hill, easy going until the summit plateau, which is a bit rough. The top is obvious, though best to wander along the hill top just to make sure of the bag. | Gill | 23/02/2018 |
From Whistle Inn via wind farm. Very straightforward. | lenman | 31/12/2017 |

Followed Fp from the 'Big Pit' & then over open moor between the air shaft & disused level. HP quite obvious. Lots of caterpillars about. | DanMaisieBex | 14/10/2017 |
From Big Pit parking spaces just outside car park reserved for walkers. On the down side, the stiles and footpaths are in terrible condition | maknipe | 13/10/2017 |
Ascended from the Big Pit car park, very boggy in places but enjoyed the colour on top with all the heather in bloom. Got a great view of a Fox who was so engrossed with hunting that he didn't notice that I was only 15 feet away. Enjoyed some juicy bilberries and also walked to Trig Point S2193. Enjoyable couple of hours! | Gerry the Ranger | 21/08/2017 |
With: hb; Parked just beyond Whistle Inn. Followed excellent path as far as new wind turbines, then track on SW side before cutting across to summit Heather mound and boundary top. Returned by same route. Very easy paths. | Ian Baines | 20/08/2017 |

From the Big Pit museum in Blaenavon. No trace of a path on the ground after leaving the museum's fence. It was rough going but not the swamp that has been mentioned. Then a pleasant circuitous descent round Mynydd James to Blaina. | Alan Moore | 16/06/2017 |
Circular route from Cwmtillery taking in Gwastad, Coety Mountain (and boundary 'top') Cefn Coach and Mynydd James. Slight heathery mound just about discernible as top, but no real path from main track to the W. Lovely sunny spring day, dry underfoot and skylarks above. | milimana | 25/03/2017 |
From Big pit. Free parking can be found on adjacent wasteground. The footpath that heads to the upper track starts ok but then disappears into a swamp. The path clearly follows an incline however there is a drainage ditch which needs crossing first.. the walking pole put this at least a metre deep. Once on the incline its straightforward to the upper mines. What a mess when you get there. Beyond the compound a path leads up onto the open moor. From there its sheep tracks and then pathless to the top. Its suprisingly quiet and the distant views are decent. | stig_nest | 15/09/2016 |
Circular route from Llanhilleth taking in Gwastad as well. | liljonb | 29/08/2016 |
From Big Pit car park. Overcast, warm, calm and good views. | iangalbraith | 06/07/2016 |

From Big Pit, nr Forge side. There's a walkers CP signed that isn't pay and display for the Pit. The OS map is incorrect, in that the FP shown from South side of Pit area doesn't exist on teh ground. Instead walk West along the Northern fence and then head for the raised dyke area through the swamp heading to old disused mine. Up the north edge of this and across plateau are to the mound. Unexciting. | nordicstar | 20/02/2016 |
We got a soaking which didn't help. Industrial history of the area could make it all more interesting. | jenx | 20/02/2016 |
Circular route from Cwmtillery. Useful car park at 21781 06091: Mynydd James, Mulfran, Cefn Coch, Coity Mountain & Gwastad. All round topped hills. Route via various quad tracks with a fair bit of yomping across heather thrown in. | Cas-gwent | 02/02/2016 |
After Mulfran & Mynydd James. Found TP19304 Block and left it uncovered. | Dusty | 30/08/2015 |

Waited for the thunderstorm to pass! Then as per GB in ten days time. | tim747 | 05/07/2015 |
Continued on track from Cefn Goch. The boys and their bikes seem to spend a lot of time up here. Summit obvious, a low mound sticking up out of a flat top. | MikeM | 28/03/2015 |
Along mine road to the end then up to the rather flat tussocky plateau where GPS found the summit. From there on along the ridge to Cefn Coch before returning to take the excellent ROW back to the mine road. | SS | 17/03/2015 |
From the Whistle Inn. On to Coety Mountain (boundary) | Newton Maximus | 27/02/2015 |
Started at the Cumtillery duck pond, then up the valley south of the highest point. Wondered about trying to decide which was the highest clump of heather until Mrs Mindless flogger had had enough. (about 10mins). Returned via a track to the north but there where lots of motor bikes using the hill as race track. A nice day (snowy and clear) but a hill so uninteresting that no one can be bothered to build anything on the top, which makes it a bit different. | mindlessflogger | 08/02/2015 |
SOTA walk - operated ham radio from summit. Started out from overflow car park above Pit Museum SO 240086. | G4OBK (Phil) | 21/01/2015 |
5/8 This was the third part of major circuit of the 6 peaks on plateau....like all of the peaks here no trig pillar summit was a short journey to left from track around 400 metres or so. | Fergalh | 13/12/2014 |
Starting from the bottom of the Cwmtillery resevoirs. We made our way up through the fields east of Cwmtillery and up onto Gwastad. We found that a lot of the rights of way shown on the map or nonexistent now. We did manage to find tracks most of the way along the ridge to take in Gwastad, Coity Mountain, Cefn Coch and Mynydd James. We had to fight across heather, tussock and blaeberry to reach the first three summits which was very tough walking. Trying to find our way back off Mynydd James was incredibly difficult. We ended up going very steeply downhill through 7ft bracken before eventually finding a path much further down. Wouldn't bother doing this again, but it was a fun day out. With Keith. | islamidget | 09/08/2014 |
From Cwmtillery. I went up an old quarry track and gully E of Gwrhyd, rough even though a ROW is shown on the map. Warm and sunny, I hoped to see Silurian moths here. Pleasant high pasutres above, lots of old trackways, but top in extensive almost flat area. | pwheeler | 26/06/2014 |
On Valleys 100 | MichaelF | 25/05/2014 |
Parked north of Blaenavon, walked down old railway line all the way to Abersychan, walked up minor road west of Abersychan, onto the ridge, up to Byrgwm trig point and along ridge bagging Gwastad and Mynydd Varteg Fawr trig as well as Coity Mountain, then back down to pub and along to where we parked 14.5 miles. | DanTrig | 15/03/2014 |
Pleasant walk up from the Big Pit. I then headed south to gwastad and then North to Cefn Coch. It was cold and frosty with a few patches of snow. | isabelle | 29/12/2013 |

Having 'bagged' Blorenge earlier i drove the short distance to a piece of waste ground on the B4248 at grid: 231102. A short fight followed with the speeding traffic and spray before i could escape the onslaught. Soon i was doing another battle, that of fighting the heavy rain and wind that swept across the hills swelling the streams and forming rivers on the paths, adding to the discomfort. My Father always used to say that there is no such thing as a bad hill, i came close to finding one! | thenomad | 03/10/2013 |
From SO227099 where there is space for a couple of cars. Quick up and down. | bowlesy | 09/06/2013 |
From E end of Blaenavon, bog path at first, but sun and views fantastic after, then via Cefn Coch & Myn James. Sunburn today, plus steam engines and big pit... | dicky | 19/05/2013 |

Up from Blaenavon with Iain Brown. Sign warns 'Free stallions' and we met two. | Eddie | 09/12/2012 |
A non-descript hill - especially with the cloud down. Walked from Cwntillery, taking in the trig at Mynydd Varteg Fawr first for a 6.2 mile circular walk that was tougher than it should have been for its distance due to 'inclement' weather - there, wasn't I polite! Lots off 'off-piste' walking which didn't help, but satisfying despite the best efforts of the weather. Did the nearby Unitary Authority top also. | jonglew | 25/11/2012 |
started at whistle inn car park and walked up clearly defined path when on top of ridge turned southwards and walked to the obvious high point the summit is insignificant consisting of a small mound | russie | 04/10/2011 |
Parked by junction at 245085 (14:45), followed track for 200m then straight up hillside to moor and (in rain) along to summit. Descended towards mining museum and went through Forge Side back to car (16:00) | dbb | 08/05/2011 |
Climbed from parking spaces next to nice little lake at East Bank to SW. Ascent is pleasant enough, but boring featureless summit moor. For a flat moorland plateau, the top is a reasonably obvious grassy mound - the remnants of a tumulus maybe...? | wheresthepath | 22/04/2011 |
