A surprising morning walk with L from the door in Troutbeck with the poor forecast changed to dry and fair, clear & windless! Unheard of! Probably explained why we saw no-one. T -shirt weather for much of the long ascent from Limefit. Then over The the more prominent Ill Bell and lesser Froswick, Down Scott's Rake path and enjoyed lovely Upper Troutbeck again - some buds out on the hedges, but no lambs yet. Meanwhile awful news today that 25 million people in Sudan face starvation -14 million of them children, then there's Gaza, and Ukraine etc etc.Chris Pearson20/03/2024

From Troutbeck Bridge - Sour Howes, Sallows, Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick, Troutbeck Tongue. With R. On good path for pretty much the entire walk.Dan Baddeley06/01/2024
The Kentmere Horseshoe from Kentmere in an anticlockwise direction visiting 9 Wainwrights: Shipman Knots, Kentmere Pike, Harter Fell, Mardale Ill Bell, High Street, Thornthwaite Crag, Froswick. Ill Bell, and Yoke. A fine and partially sunny Boxing Day, with very fine snow showers. Certainly a nice change from heavy rain and storm force winds of recent days! 22km with 1200m ascent, taking 7h 40m.silverwolf_alan26/12/2023

From Troutbeck Bridge: Sour Howes, Sallows, Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick, Troutbeck Tongue, then a rather rough and tiresome fight across to Baystones before dropping back to Troutbeck. 21km, 5h 50. Stunningly clear and cold.Rockdoctor15/10/2023

Up with L from Troutbeck via The Tongue and very steep Scots Rake in sudden boiling sun - soon soaked in sweat. The Roman Road status of the track /path over High Street and down Scots Rake is in doubt following a 2016 and 2022 survey which found no real evidence even with Lidar and field excavations. Arguments for it: It is certainly old - boundary references in 12th century charters (Ragg 1910) mention a Brethstrett/Bredestrete - almost certainly High Street. Who else but the Romans could have built an ancient road up there? It is remarkably direct given the difficult terrain. Arguments against it: It is unlike any other Roman road - it is often sunken with upstanding side banks. No connection to a known Roman site has ever been made. Many sections look like a packhorse track - particularly in the north and Scot Rake.Chris Pearson09/10/2023

Around our version of the Kentmere Horseshoe with L. First up steeply the east corrie of Ill Bell in dense damp cold blowy cloud -not the forecast dry with sunny spell. At least the wind was from the SW and behind as planned.Chris Pearson02/10/2023

From Ill Bell after a sweltering ascent in the heatwave of our favourite climb - 500m straight up the steep lonely east ridge from Kentmere Reservoir L engrossed in a work phone call as we trudged upwards over Froswick summit ignoring the bypass path option. Then to Thornthwaite Crag for lunch in the sun - then along to High Street then wonderfully off-piste straight down through the crags at the Head of Kentmere to visit the source of the R Kent and its upper course where we skinny dipped to cool off in one of its many pools -delightful in this rare Sept heatwave.Chris Pearson05/09/2023
