Beautiful morning and walking in sunshine up to Selside Pike. Clag came in after that and remaining tops had at best Hazy very restricted views. W Jenx and Bryher from limited parking at Truss Gap. Along lane to Swindale Head then fine old track up past Hobgumble Gill and steep up onto Nabs Moor. Pathless then to Howes and the NE Top of Branstree. Motorway line then to Selside amidst increasingly heavy showers before descending the Old Corpse Road back to Swindale Head and car. Set off bellow Hollow Stone at the bottom of Rowantreethwaite Beck (great name) up onto the shoulder of Branstree through thick bracken on a very little used path. Up onto Branstree after being drawn towards Brant Street by the path. Down to the large cairn at Artle Crag and a break. Great views. Down to the survey pillar in the dip and up onto High Howe or Branstree NE top, not named on OS map, then down to Captain Whelter Bog (where do they get these fantastic names) and up onto Selside. Fantastic views from here. Chat with a deaf man then down the shoulder to Old Corpse Road (more great names). Turn left and down to Brown Howe and down to Rowantreethwaite Well (there it is again) and down past High Loup (names, names, names) with great views up to the waterfalls of Hopgill Beck. One of the nicest descents I've done. 4 Birkets 2 of which Wainwrights, that'll do nicely for a short jaunt.Mark T23/07/2016
