Staying at Coniston YH with Alex McBride for the weekend, we headed up Walna Scar Road (a track really) for a circuit covering eight summits. Five of which were Hewitts and Wainwrights, two were just Wainwrights and one was just a Hewitt. Alex is bagging the Wainwrights, while I'm doing the Hewitts. Summits in order: Dow Crag (774m), H and W Old Man of Coniston (803m), H and W Brim Fell (796m), W Grey Frair (773m), H and W Great Carr (785m), W Swirl How (802m), H and W Black Sails (745m), H Wetherlam (763m), H and Wchillyman821/10/2023

1st solo hike in years and 1st hike since completing the 214. Set off about 4am and made great time to Tilberthwaite in about an hour. After getting out the car to move some Herdwicks off the road I parked up and headed up through the disused mines. Fabulous route and so interesting following the Gill. After crossing the river I made my way very very slowly up Steel Edge. It was so so hot and difficult to stay motivated knowing I needed to be home for Midday so Myla could get her ears pierced. Even rang Bec for motivation. After topping out on Steel edge and seeing the sea and the old man was amazing. At this point was very low on water so got to the top for some amazing views before heading down Wetherlam edge which was very hard work. An hour or so later I finally got to the river to filter and rest, after a wild poo I got to the car completely and utterly exhausted. It was fantastic to be back.Scotty 2 Hotty17/07/2021

10.5 mile walk from lane north-west of Coniston (free parking). Walked up track towards Miners Bridge then started ascending passing the old quarry up nice grassy ridge all the way to Wetherlam, from here we continued easily to Black Sails then steeply up Prison Band to Swirl How. Then its an easy amble to Great Carrs taking in plane wreckage on the way, then grassy descent/ascent to Grey Friar. Descended back to col then followed contouring path around Swirl Band to Levers Hawse following track past Levers Water, down to the Pudding Stone then up to The Bell which has great views for a little hill. We then followed tourist track back to Miners Bridge and back to car. Perfect sunny/light breezy conditions, we saw a few people about but not too many for the Lakes. Great views all round. 1141m ascent.DanTrig24/04/2021

From Swirl How we made our way down the steep craggy ridge of prison band stopping for dinner half way down sheltered from the wind. I had an amazing beef and horseradish butty bought the day earlier from Coniston. Having negotiated Prison band it was a steep climb cutting across the side of the rocky mountain to the summit of Weatherlam. For me the summit of the day. Breathtaking views of Windermere then looking north the Helvelyn ranges,Langdale Pikes to the Scafells. Absolutley amazing and worth a 10/15min chill at the top. Couldn’t rest for too long though and we now needed to retrace our steps to finally get to the summit of great carrs having been on the mountain twice already today! On the way down wetherlam we stopped and talked to a man and his deaf wife who were stopping in Coniston giving them walking advice. He wanted to retrace his steps but wanted to try to get the old man of Coniston brim fell and dow crag.Big no for me, far to long a walk.We said our goodbyes and off weScotty 2 Hotty21/06/2018

Staying at Monk Coniston (HF Guest House). From Coniston with HF party. Up tack on true left bank of Church Beck until the level of Coppermines Valley reached. Then we took track right which gradually ascends hillside. We continued on path until it reaches its maximum height of about 1300'. From this point we went up Lad Stones Ridge to the top of Wetherlam. Continued to Swirl How and Coniston Old Man.pwbellarby31/12/1961
One of my first ever hills, Wetherlam was my 'house' (blue) when at the erstwhile Windermere Grammar School - other houses being Fairfield (green) and Scafell (red). Once a year we did these 'house' hills, in rotation; there was an easier or tougher walk to suit one's abilities - and the abilities of the teachers too!Aye Jimmy30/07/1960
