From Cow Green Reservoir Car park. Easy track out past the reservoir then Pennine Way. Followed tracks through the grouse butts, then walked across fairly easy terrain to summit. Abysmal day. High winds, freezing fog, extremely cold and no visibility whatsoever.Lazylizzie27/01/2024
From cow green res biked up the track to the shooting lodge.robertphillips09/09/2023
From Murton Fell in flurries of snow. Surprisingly good going from footbridge to the south. Back to Murton along spectacular south side of High Cup Nick.cumbria mammoth26/03/2023

Penultimate English Nuttall, following on from Knock fell. back to Dufton via High cup nick.colinfielding11/08/2022
10.6 mile out-and-back from the car park at Cow Green Reservoir following easy track to Cauldron Snout then Pennine Way up past Birkdale farm to Grain Beck. We followed the tracks through the grouse butts up to its end then walked across fairly easy and not too wet terrain to summit. Great wilderness views of the surrounding area and distant views of the Dales and Lakes. Returned the same way. 530m of easy ascent. Sunny to start with but then high cloud came in. We drove to and bagged Three Pikes afterwards. No one about away from reservoir.DanTrig01/08/2022
from Dufton via High Cup Nick and footbridge over Maize Beck. Trig Point IS still there, but in pieces and forming the cairn. Two very still sheep 50m before the summit fooled me into thinking that was the cairn! Beautiful day with excellent views of other prominent hills.IanHHill07/07/2022
From Dufton via High Cup Nick.Over little foot bridge and straight at the summit via energy sapping peat hags. Back over the other footbridge to Murton Fell and then back via HCN to Dufton.Longwojo14/05/2022
This was the first summit on day 4 of a 6 day backpack in the area. A really tough approach from Knock Old Man but on reaching the summit, it was all worth it for the view I had of Cow Green. Wonderful!morgs4mountains24/03/2022
A bit snowy and icy. From Cow Green on bike then across the dam and over the moor . Hard going.Pete Pozman10/12/2021
From Cow Green reservoir parking to Birkdale. The open access land NW of Birkdale is restricted on specific dates in May and June. A good gravel track follows NE side of Grain Beck to a shooting cabin. From here it’s pot luck on a choice of ATV tracks each of which vanish at some point when they encounter a zone of heather. At 750 metres the tough veg gives way to short grasses and an easy finish to the top. The prominent ATV from the top forks part way down, the major L fork going the wrong way and the R fork soon petering out in the heather barrier.Isbjorn27/08/2021
Questions by farmer due to nesting birds but ok to proceed keeping to ATV tracks. Ironic when all he does is get a few people round shooting them ! So no birds spottedconanharrod29/05/2021
From Forest in Teesdale on the Pennine Way and shooters tracks.rhalstead23/05/2021
From Cow Green reservoir followed Pennine way to open access land. Took track up RHS of river that ends at a shooting lodge. Followed ATV tracks on RHS of river all of the way to the summit. A few places where it disappeared into the bog but generally easy to find again. Came back the same way. Much easier underfoot than I expected. No red flags flying this time. May, June, July is when access is evidently restricted for nesting birds and red flags will be flying, so best to check before you go in these months.JulieB02/05/2021
Anticlockwise route from Dufton, visiting the wonderful High Cup Nick first. Then across pathless ground to Murton Fell, Knock Fell and Backstone Edge. Returned via the miner's track.oldbagger2720/04/2021
From Cow Green Reservoir, followed Grain Beck descended N to descend Force Gill in bed of gully scrambling down waterfalls and beautiful pools. Easily crossed Tees due to recent dry conditions. Ascended Viewing Hill.Nick Canute20/04/2021

From Cow Green over the dam, then using various quad bike tracks which run all over the hillside. Grouse everywhere. With B and R. Shame about the trig.jenx01/12/2020
From the top of the radar station road cross country and back a distance of 15k over pretty rough peat moorland and haggs but some nice limestone grassland as well and worth visiting the lovely sheepfold built into a cliff on the north west side.Guy Heelis27/11/2020
Start at small car park at Grid 806308. Take te track passed Birkdale Farm and take the track close to Grain beck head up to Meldon Hill, return route down Northeast slopes to the reservoir follow it back to the start.smocks and denims26/11/2020

Lots of bog hopping from Knock fell over to Meldon Hill with Hilary the back via High Cup Nick. Must come back for the fell race.Fellhugger22/08/2020
From Cow Green Reservoir car park - crossed Cow Green Dam wall then long trackless trudge over Great Cocklake to the summit as veils of heavy summer rain cross the fells - Summit and trig bagged we descend along the tracks following Kettlegrain Sike and Grain Beck to find the Pennine Way. Returned to Cow Green - Explored Couldron Snout Waterfall found Sundew then departed as the rains came in once more.briandavies20/07/2020
Parked Cow Green Reservoir and took in Widdybank Fell en route to Meldon Hill. The gamekeeper told me Meldon Hill was closed to give the wading birds a chance with their second brood. The greater black backed gulls, which he is not allowed to shoot this year have eaten all of the first brood. He was OK in the end and told me the best route up.clivevilla06/07/2020
From Cow Green car park, via Cauldron Snout and Pennine Way to Grain Beck. Then up ATV track as far as the shuttered building (NY 79362 28334). Quad-bike track from there mostly well-defined. Gets lost in two northern branches of Kettlegrain Sike, but good again after that all the way to (near) the top.Peter_W_Mitchell 01/07/2020
trig point in pieces. On to Knock Fell, from Duftonjef02/06/2020
10:30, 1 degree, sunny, light south-westerlies at Cow Reservoir. I first spied Meldon Hill from Mickle Fell a few years ago and thought it looked enticingly remote - and presumably a challenge. I picked a good day for it, the semi-frozen ground making the going a bit easier and picked up a good ATV route higher up. A light covering of snow above about 2300', blue sky, the Yorkshire fells silhouetted, and the distant Lakeland fells dusted white made for a surprisingly enjoyable walk. On to Widdybank Fell.Wycombe Wanderer19/01/2020
From Cow Green, used the shooter's track along Grain Beck before a tough cross country hike to the summit. Light snow on topGary Heath26/10/2019
From High Cup Nick then south to the bridge over Maize Beck.Alan Moore06/10/2019
Kirkland > Greg's Hut > Cross Fell > Little Dun Fell > Great Dun Fell > Knock Old Man > Meldon Hill > Viewing Hill > Round Hill > Greg's Hut > Kirkland. One of the hardest and most ambitious walk I have ever done. Hardest bag was the walk to Meldon Hill from Knock Old Man due the the terrain. Otherwise the hardest parts were the river crossings required for the route I took. Drizzly rain for pretty much all the time and had to walk to Greg's hut and back from/to Kirkland in dark with head torch. Solo. Don't know how far I walked but my watch said 64,000 steps / 6,000 kcsl mostly 'off-piste'.axoree14/08/2019
Bit of a plod up in wind and rain but summitted in sunshine. Superb views into the Lake District to the west and Mickle to the south.Tom D18/07/2019

From Cow Green Resr car park, diverted up to Widdybank Fell en-route. From W end of reservoir 4km of heather/grass moorland each way, with a good smattering of peat hags thrown in. Poor conditions - rain and low cloud all day.jonglew30/05/2019
Solo from Dufton by PW to Knock Old Man, then direct line to summit and descent to pick up PW at High Cup Nick. Snow on the tops made the bog sloggin' that much more interesting This walk marks the completion of my 46 years of mountain walking since Kinder Scout in 1972.Aimless Rambler11/02/2019
Parked at Cow Green and followed footpath down to the dam. Joined Pennine Way and followed to bridge over Grain Beck. Went right and followed footpath up to shooting hut. Took track to left which looked like an ATV run up Grain Beck towards summit crossing several Sikes. Found shattered trig point and enjoyed views over Cow Green Reservoir. Headed back down a dry Sike and picked up line of shooting butts to shooting hut. Then followed footpath back the way I came. Checked open access before heading off Pennine Way and this weekend was ok. Glad I did this walk in dry conditions. Crossed several Sikes which would have been unpleasant in wet conditions.TractorBoy14/07/2018

Parked at Cow Green reservoir then walked down towards the dam. Then a quick look at Cauldron Snout before heading up Great Cocklake then onto Meldon Hill. Returned on an ESE route to pick up the Pennine Way and all in under 4 hours.Dugswell202/07/2017
From Dufton along Pennine Way, past High Cup Nick, to footbridge over the Maize Beck, then headed directly for the summit avoiding most of the hags.milimana02/07/2017

From Murton car park, followed good track which goes round the back of summit of Murton Pike. Then mostly on pathless terrain to Murton Fell, High Cup Nick and Meldon Hill.dgresty24/05/2017

Walked on my own from Dufton. u Dull but clear enough for good views. Got a bit disoriented in the peat hags. Easier coming down as I just headed for High Cup Nick. This fell marks a milestone as it was my 500th fell since I started logging them in 2005flockwatcher07/04/2017
Nuttall Walk EN 9.3 Dufton Fell from Dufton, visiting Backstone Edge, Knock Fell and Meldon Fell. 24km with 780m ascent in 7 hours. (S)silveracorn_alan06/08/2016
This walk started at the northern end of Cow Green Reservoir, with the summit of Meldon Hill clearly visible across the water, and the dome on Great Dun Fell beyond. Mickle Fell lay to the south. The path dropped gently to the dam and more steeply to the top of Cauldron Snout. It joined the Pennine Way to pass in front of Birkdale Farm, which is occupied but today there seemed to be no-one home. A few yards later a shooting track branched off right in the direction of Meldon Hill. I set off along a good track as far as a shooting hut. From there I went left and the track soon disappeared. I found myself tramping through heather and occasionally startling several grouse, until the going became easier on the approach to the summit. The trig point was shattered.peter4lc23/06/2016
From Cow Green Reservoir. 10 miles, 4 hours. Clear with small snow patches.Hammy25/11/2015
SIXTH CONSECUTIVE SUNNY DAY FROM ALSTON BASE CAMP. LONG DRIVE ROUND TO DUFTON, THEN FOLLOWED NUTTALL'S WALK 9.3 TO THE LETTER. EXCELLENT TRACK TO BELOW BACKSTONE EDGE WITH REASONABLE ASCENT, THEN ROUGH TO KNOCK FELL BUT EASIER ON LONG TRUDGE OUT TO MELDON HILL. ROUGH GOING BUT FAIRLY DRY DOWN TO PENNINE WAY AND GOOD WALK BACK PAST HIGH CUP NICK WITH THE SUN SETTINGBURGESS01/10/2015
From Dufton following the Nuttall's walk.JohnStoneham06/09/2015
parked at Cow Green reservoir NY 811 309. Took the path to the east and south of the reservoir to join the Pennine Way above Cauldron Snout. At NY 800 278 followed the shooting track northwest to the hut. Paths become vague after this but the best route seems to follow Kettlegrain Sike, up the hillside and peat bogs to Meldon Hall and onto the summit. Return via same route, around 5hrsdicky bird09/06/2015
