Parked in a newish looking car park (6-8 cars) at the end of the road in Hilton. Took the old quarry track to the SE and up the zig zags to Long Fell, then a trod to Tinside Rigg. A path off the NE ridge eventually gave us sight of an atv track leading N, then NW on the Little Fell plateau near to the trig and hp. It continued N from the W side of the latter, past the shelters (lunch) on Arnside Rake and right up to the large cairn on Mickle Fell. The hp is just beyond. Returning to Arnside Rake we hacked across to Swarth Beck and picked up the (faint at first) path over the watershed and down into Scordale and eventually the track alongside Scordale Beck back to Hilton in the dark. A long day in the showers and low cloud and extremely wet underfoot. The upper Scordale valley worth another visit in better weather. Walk was on a Warcop public access day. From the parking area in Murton for a Thirteen mile walk to the summit's of Murton fell, Little fell, Tinside rigg, Long fell and Roman fell. Returning via Hilton in Six and half hours.WAYNE ROWLETT08/04/2023
On a Warcop public access day. Parked at Murton and walked clockwise around a circular course picking up 3 as yet unclimbed Nuttalls and my last English Dewey. Once on the Warcop estate I only saw a farmer with his sheep, oh, and one bit of ammo hanging on a fence. I visited Murton Pike, Murton Fell (summit and B+L top), Little Fell (summit and the sadly damaged trig), Tinside Rigg, Long Fell, and Roman Fell (my final English Dewey). Altogether nearly 24km with 880m ascent taking me 7h 30m.silveracorn_alan04/03/2023

Another visit to this hill. Came over on a really good track from Mickle Fell. Dry underfoot most of the way. Good views on a very mild autumn day. With Minto.Dangerous Dave02/10/2022
From Cow Green Reservoir car park, via Pennine Way (Cauldron Snout, Birkdale). Took left path at Moss Shop, crossed Maize Beck, followed fence line to summit of Mickle Fell. Return to right of way, and on to Scordale Head, ascent of Little Fell (since learned this not encouraged, even on non-firing days, but is suggested on some websites), return to Scordale Head, and summit Murton Fell. Return via High Cup Gill Head and Pennine Way. on web). Return via High Cup Gill Head and Pennine Way.raymooremanx28/08/2022
Pleasant circuit from the Durham / Cumbria boundary on the B6276, taking in Long Fell, Tinside Rigg, Little Fell and Mickle Fell. Glad I took the advice to head north off Little Fell as I came across a wide track which took me easily to Mickle Fell avoiding the bogfest that the direct route would have delivered.oldbagger2707/08/2022
Round of Long Fell, Tinside Rigg, Little Fell and Mickle Fell and a long trudge back along footpath alongside Swarth Beck and finally along Scordale back to Hilton.Longwojo07/08/2022

From Hilton - on non-firing day - via Scordale, Swindale, Siss Gill, Burton Fell, Little Fell, Little Fell Trig Point (somewhat damaged), Burton Fell: Scott Howe, Warcop Fell, Tinside Rigg, Tinside Rigg West Top, Long Fell with return down path in Swindale and track in Scordale.RobB06/03/2022
Just choose a spot for the summit. Looks quite flat in the immediate area. 2nd summit with trig looks more distinctiveconanharrod08/11/2021
Hilton, over Roman Fell, Long Fell and Tinside Rigg, across to track leading up Burton Fell and across pathless tussock to high point of Little Fell. North to Scordale Head and down Scordale.Flatfield29/08/2021
A revisit to Little Fell to bag the ‘subsidiary tops’. Solo. Parked at Hilton and walked up the public bridleway along Scoredale Beck. Direct climb up grassy slopes to the beautiful cairn on Hilton Fell (686m). Small cairn on Arnside Rake (690m) and also the grassy rise at (693m). Pleasant walk up to Little Fell and then to the shattered trig. Long walk out to the tiny cairn on Scott Hill (650m). I have finally completed Nick Wright’s English Mountain Summits!Dangerous Dave28/08/2021
A non firing day. Far less bureaucratic to get on to the range than it used to be. From Hilton using the ATV track as recommended. Three hours up and down.Campbell Singer09/08/2021

From Hilton on a glorious Easter weekend, taking in Mickle Fell then north and back down Scordale. Saw one person on the summit of Mickle FellRockdoctor03/04/2021
From Hilton. Snow above 500m. Good winter conditions. Dry, bright and very cold in northerly wind. Took old track line all the way up to shelter and sheepfold, then plod through not too deep snow to top. On to the trig then direct down to bridleway in Swindale. This was my last English Simm, Nuttall, B&L, Bridge, Hewitt. With B and R.jenx24/12/2020
A day of plausible denial. From Hilton. Conflicting MoD indicators MoD – flags not flying, lights not lit, barriers down. Along waymarked track SE to plantation, then up track to Long Fell mines; gunfire below. Up Roman Fell from col at NY761200, purgatorial veg; on to Tinside Rigg, tough veg. Bit of a path just before and after bridleway from Christy Bank, then ATV track to Little Fell. Corroded unexploded ordnance aplenty. From Little Fell a promising ATV track was abandoned several times as it kept veering off rather than going direct to Scorsdale Head, from which an ATV track sidles up SW along line of white posts to S top of Murton Fell, then it’s ruff’n’tuff N to the summit of Murton Fell. Ruff’n’tuff down to the mapped PF at the ‘shelters’. Down at the Murton CP, MoD display board says the area is off limits 6.5 days a week (access only after 13:00 on Sundays), with access to Little Fell only in escorted groups in July; there is no similar display board at Hilton – hence PDIsbjorn25/08/2020

Armed with a permit on a no firing day we headed out on the Nuttall route from Hilton. Little Fell Summit was very disappointing but Mickle Fell more than made up for it (shame about the horrendous pathless terrain during the middle section)Jephcote8303/08/2019

A very wet and windy Xmas day walk from Hilton. Up via Swindale and down via Scordale. It’s a wild place in the mist on the featureless summit. Back home by the fire and Xmas dinner by 2pm. One more Nuttall to go!Hammy25/12/2017
A group of twelve met at Town Head above the village of Hilton, including three leaders from the AONB. Whereas all my walks to date in the North Pennines have been characterised by bleakness, this one started with a lush valley, walking alongside the beautiful Scordale Beck. After Swindale Brow, it became a rocky ravine. By the time we reached Scordale Head we were nearly at 2,000 feet, and we then left the path to walk south-east to the summit, which was unmarked. The weather had been unsettled since a hot spell in mid-June, but views were clear today in the sunshine. Early in the descent we saw unexploded ordnance – a reminder of why it is not recommended that this mountain is climbed unaccompanied. A path led down to Swindale Edge and then to Scordale Beck again.peter4lc08/07/2017

From Hilton out to Swindale Beck then well up row before cutting back to Roman Fell. Followed broad ridge back and over Long Fell and Tinside Rigg (English Nuttalls finished again)! Decided might as well break all the rules and did Little Fell again via the trig point. Great walk and didn't see a single bit of munitions.SS31/12/2016

From Hilton. Tried to do it legally but I had missed the once a year walk. Had a Mickle Fell permit though so it was semi-legal.clivevilla06/08/2016
Walked on my own from Hilton. Fine and breezy It was not easy to find the few stones that mark the summit of this fell. Luckily I met someone else who was looking and we managed to find them together.flockwatcher06/08/2016
Did it legally from Hilton on annual guided walk.David Gradwell10/07/2016
Route 9.4 from the Nuttall's book. Had a permit but no phone signal so didn't ring the guard room. Little Fell was reasonably straightforward and the route to Mickle Fell was fairly easy as long as you follow the Nuttall's directions and stick to the quad bike tracks. After this though it gets pretty hard and you're up to your ankles in heather most of the way to Murton Fell. Didn't see a soul all day. The only shell casings I saw were from grouse shooting. Pretty wet, cloudy and windy all day.tsharp09/07/2016
NINTH CONSECUTIVE SUNNY DAY FROM ALSTON BASE CAMP. FOLLOWED NUTTALL'S WALK 9.4. EARLY START (SCRAPED OFF ICE) FOR LONG DRIVE ROUND TO HILTON. HAD PERMIT AND PHONE CALL HAD AUTHORISED ROUTE OVER LITTLE FELL. WENT STRAIGHT UP GRASSY TRACK OVER SWINDALE BROW WHICH LED EASILY ALL THE WAY TO LITTLE FELL. EASY WALK ON TO MICKLE FELL KEEPING TO RIDGE AS ADVISED. NO SIGN OF SHELLS ANYWHERE BUT GROUSE SHOOTING PARTY IN THE BOTTOM BY SWARTH BECK. QUITE TOUGH DESCENT TO SWARTH BECK AND ROUGH WALK UP BECK, THEN SIKE TO MURTON FELL. EXHAUSTED, BUT EASY CROSSING TO BRIDLEWAY AND BACK DOWN MINE TRACK AS DUSK WAS FALLING.BURGESS03/10/2015
From Mickle Fell, had a pass. Followed a vehicle track in the grass on the ridge above Force Beck until I was under the grassy flank of the fell. Followed GPS GR to the unmarked flat grassy top. Direct descent back to Hanging Seal, lovely waterfall passed on Force Beck. Very wet underfoot everywhere. Border fence back to Car at NY831199.Saw no one or any unexploded shells!mick30/08/2015
Climbed as part of a circular route from Hilton of Roman Fell, Long Fell, Tinside Rigg, Little Fell, Mickle Fell, Murton Fell x2 and Murton Pike. Mostly pathless peaty ground that was damp underfoot.JohnStoneham30/08/2015
Parked in Hilton. Easy walk into swindale brow and then followed a grassy track up the nose from there. Worth noting that i didnt see a single shell this way. Some areas of squelchiness in particular between standards fold and the summit region but the track leads all the way to the summit cone. Actual summit is nondescript. Trig, whats left of it stands within a shelter at other end of the plateau. Felt sorry for the trig. The central core is now damaged and whilst its been poorly for some time it looked particularly flimsy and forlorn. so built the stones up around it. At least this will preserve it a bit longer. Headed for Mickle fell next. Dont short cut it.. stick to the watershed.stig_nest01/08/2015

Parked at Murton NY730220 on sunday after the flags are lowered (around midday). Head east to Swindale Brow, then keep on the bridleway to NY770207 at Siss Gill. Follow faint paths to west of Siss Gill to summit. Return by same routedicky bird17/05/2015
Visited on AONB guided walk. Excellent guides. One guide had a surveying quality satnav and confirmed the OS spot height as the lump next to the one with the pile of stones, although also measured both to be the same height. Never walked with so many Nuttall Baggers. Two of us completed the English Nuttalls today (although in my case excluding Pillar Rock as I'm a walker not a climber). Even had an explanation of bare peat renovation from an expert who is working on the area between Little Fell and Mickle Fell - tread lightly if you cross here - they chose this area to work on because it's the most damaged in the northern Pennines.ijpowell12/07/2014

From Tinside Rigg, passing ruined sheepfold with unexploded shell lying there (see Gallery), very tatty trig in a shelter and a lot of shakeholes. Summit vague, couple of tiny cairns. Continued to Murton Fell.Aye Jimmy07/07/2013
Parked at road end in Hilton village – SE along track – NE up track zigzags to summit of Long Fell (B&L) – Tinside Rigg (B&L) – NE & then N. across rough moorland to the summit of Little Fell – NE across rough moorland to summit of Mickle Fell – W. to pick up the path down Scordale Beck – Got confused in mist & ended up going over Murton Fell & down Trundale Gill – Harbour Flatt farm – High Cup House - Picked up by PM. Heavy snowfall all day made the walk very slow....took far longer than expected. Nothing but a trudge through deep virgin snow. Took in Burton Fell as well without even the reward of a view. A true Pennine winters day. Had the most amazing experience though. For 5 minutes the wind dropped, the sun came out and I was standing in a true moorland wilderness. Then, in fromt of me a group of black grouse appeared and started to do their lekk. Few people have ever seen this and it is a sight I will never forget. This completes all the English 2000 feet hills. I'm glad that I climbed (or was pulled up) Pillar Rock and Napes Needle as a far fitter and less cumbersome 18 year old ..... nearly 50 years ago!moorsman03/11/2012

Gave Murton Fell a miss as I had forgotton my water. Luckily bannannas and apples have a high water content! In cloud all day. No views and wet through but little rain as such.Father Ted02/06/2012

I finally made it to the Warcop Military Range and having seen that the weather forecast was favourable, I left home at 3am and drove to Hilton. I climbed via the bridleway and Christy Bank before popping over to the fell. I walked over to Long Fell before returning and heading over to Little Fell. Saw nobody on this section of my walk and only 4 pieces of old rusty ordnance. The walk to Little Fell was very straightforward along the ATV track and then an easy summit ridge walk to the small cairn marking the highest point.morgs4mountainsblank
